As you add your resume to LinkedIn, it is important to read it through the lens of a future employer. Consider the questions that they will ask themselves as they assess whether you show the appropriate skills and experience for their open position. You can gather this information by reading through descriptions for your desired job and reflecting on previous interview questions that you have encountered within the field. Be sure that your resume addresses the qualifications needed to obtain the position you desire in order to get called for an interview.

Upload Your Resume To The Featured Section Of Your Profile

This method of uploading your resume to LinkedIn has a slightly different goal. Rather than using your resume to apply for jobs, we’re showcasing it on your profile for anyone who might stop by.

There are 3 reasons I love leveraging the Featured Section of your LinkedIn profile for this:

  • The Featured Section is right near the top of your profile, making it easy to find
  • The Featured Section leverages both visuals and text to promote the content inside of it
  • The Featured Section gives you flexibility on the types of media you add
  • When you showcase your resume in your Featured Section, it’s going to pop off the page making it easy for future employers to find and read.

    When it comes to adding your resume to your Featured Section, you have two major options to choose from.

    You can upload the actual document itself or you can link out to a live copy of your resume .

    I personally recommend using the live link option. First, it lets you easily update your resume at a moment’s notice without having to keep track of saved files and re-upload every time you make an adjustments. Second, you can actually see if people are viewing your resume!

    Here’s how to upload a live link of your resume to your LinkedIn’s Featured section:

    First, create a live copy of your resume. You can do this in a Google Doc or a Word Doc that’s saved in the OneDrive cloud.

    Second, set permissions to View Only and make sure that anyone with the link can view the document.

    A CV uploaded directly to your profile is not used when you apply for jobs from LinkedIn, but it can be seen and downloaded by everyone who views your page. To add your CV this way:

  • Log on and select the option to view your profile.

  • Expand the ‘Features’ menu and choose ‘Media’ at the bottom.

  • Select your CV file to upload from the window that pops up.

  • Hit the ‘Save’ button.

    If you are already working, your current employer can view your resume.

    While it might not be considered as a big offense, your HR can notice that you have currently mentioned your employment and that you are currently looking out for opportunities.

    Unlike job search portals where there is an option to block some companies from viewing your profile, LinkedIn does not given an option to block your employers from visiting your profile and have a look at your resume.

    Another disadvantage is that your manager and hiring manager can view your current roles and responsibilties and if you have mentioned any other roles/ responsibilities can question you.

    Upload Your Resume Via Linkedin’s Easy Apply

    Using the Job Application Settings method can make things easy, but you might want to go a bit deeper with the personalization of your resume as it relates to the roles you’re applying for.

    Personally, I recommend creating a unique resume for each role that you apply for. You can use a tool like ResyMatch.io to scan your existing resume, compare it to the job description, and see where you need to improve:

    If you want to upload a custom resume for each role, this method is going to be the best option for you . Here’s how it works:

    First, find the job you want to apply for on LinkedIn.

    Next, click the Easy Apply button . We’ll use this Key Account Manager role at LinkedIn as an example:

    On the first screen, you’ll need to fill out your contact information and your location.

    When you click Next, you’ll see the resume screen where you’ll be able to upload your custom resume for this specific role. The same rules around file type and size apply here:

    Once your resume upload is complete, finish the form and hit Submit Application! Your application will be sent to the company with the custom resume that you created just for this role.

    Building Out Your Linkedin Profile Using Your Resume Content

    The final method is a bit different than the previous four. In this case, we’re leveraging our resume to build out our LinkedIn profile.

    That means we’re not uploading per se. Rather, we’re taking the content that we have in our resume and using it as a basis for creating or updating our LinkedIn profile.

    The main section this will impact is the Experience section of your LinkedIn profile. Make sure you have any sensitive information removed, then you can literally paste your resume bullets into the description section for each role.

    As discussed above, you can add your resume to LinkedIn using many different methods. But did you know you can download your entire LinkedIn profile as a PDF? Downloading your LinkedIn profile may be the quickest way to create your resume.

  • Choose Save to PDF in the dropdown.
  • Even though this is a quick way to create your LinkedIn resume, we dont recommend treating a hard copy of your LinkedIn profile as a resume.

    Alright, so you still want to upload and post your resume on LinkedIn. Heres how you will do it.

    The first step is to make sure you have the resume located on your computer. You are going to need to upload it via a file upload in the LinkedIn dashboard.

    So, find the resume and label it and then you are ready for the next step.

    When you log into your linkedin account, you should head over to the profile section. There is a sectioned called add a section. Click that. Then, there will be an option for media.

    This is where you will upload your resume. Your resume is the media that you will upload.

    Its important to note that this is not an intutitive design. Its actually sort of a complicated work around for a better design feature that isnt present.

    Part of this cumbersome design is due to LinkedIn being a social networking site for job seekers. The entire design of the LinkedIn platform is such that it doesnt need to have resumes.

    People basically upload their resume as media, which isnt the best approach. Remember, this is not Indeed or some other job search site where the primary or only method to view and review peoples work history is via some resume.

    LinkedIn attempts to replicate and replace the resume by their own means.

    Thats why I say to anyone who asks that its really not necessary to place your resume on LinkedIn. The job titles and the information you fill out are more important than an actual resume that you might upload.

    How To View Your Resume Drafts On Linkedin

    LinkedIn also allows you to build your resume on-site. To access your previously created LinkedIn resumes or edit your drafts, do the following:

  • Go to LinkedIn and be sure to log in.
  • Press the Me icon in the navigation menu.
  • Go to View Profile.
  • You can also access this option differently:

  • Find the Jobs icon in the navigation menu.
  • Look for Resume Builder in the left sidebar.
  • A new window will open to see a list of all the resumes you have previously uploaded in the Resume Builder. You can preview, edit, copy and delete them by pressing the three horizontal dots next to each draft.

    In using this option, you choose to take advantage of LinkedIns feature of storing up to four of your recently-uploaded resumes. In other words, you can upload up to four different resumes which you can quickly use to apply for a job.

    Obviously, these four resumes shouldnt be the same. They should be different and tweaked to fit certain job types.

    Despite this convenience, well tell you this: having four resumes to choose from for jobs isnt the best way to go about job hunting. Every job is unique and if youre to increase your chances, you have to tailor your resume to every job.

    All the same, you might have a situation where youve seen an ad and need a quick application. One reason might be that the deadline to apply is almost due. In such a case, using one of your resumes already on the site becomes useful.

    So how do you get your 4 resumes onto LinkedIn?

    Visit the Job application settings and ensure that the setting for saving resumes and answers is on. If the setting is currently off, use the toggle button to the right to switch it on.

    Once that is switched on, scroll down to the section labeled Manage your resumes. Here youll see a button for uploading your resume. You can upload up to four resumes and they can only be in either Microsoft Word or PDF format.

    Option : The Easy Apply Process

    With this option, job seekers can upload and save numerous resumes to use when applying for specific jobs. This ensures you are able to use versions of your resume that include the required keywords that future employers will be searching for.

    Here are the steps for using Easy Apply:

    1. In LinkedIn, click the Jobs tab in the navigation bar.

    2. Search for a job by title or location. Click on a job title to get details, and then press the Easy Apply button on any jobs you want to apply for. A note from LinkedIn: If you see the Apply button instead of the Easy Apply button, you’ll be routed to that company’s website or job board to continue the job application process.

    3. Upload your resume to include it in the job application. LinkedIn will save the last five resumes you uploaded, along with the date you last used each version, so you can easily apply for similar jobs in the future.

    A good tip is to vary your resume file names to keep track of which ones are for which jobs so you can easily find them with a search. For example, Richard.Jones.Programmer.doc or Richard.Jones.Data.Analyst.doc.

    Remember that a resume on your LinkedIn account should still follow the rules of good resume writing that you’d use for applying on other sites. Be professional, concise, and tailor each resume to the specific position you’re after using your title, summary section, and the keywords from the job description.
