Do You Put Address On Resume

Can Clog Up Your Resumes Visual Flow

Should I Put My Home Address on My Resume

Depending on how much information is already on your resume, the addition of an address may result in a flawed or unsightly design.

If your resume is already packed with information but you know you are going to need to include an address, it may be time to edit.

The ideal length for a standard resume is one page. If including your address pushes your resume outside of this limit, you will need to find a way to whittle it down more.

The truth is that your layout does matter. It can affect everything from employer first impressions to how well an ATS can read and categorize your resume.

Paying close attention to the visual flow of your resume is key!

Your First & Last Name

  • Your middle name is optional. Include it if you want to distinguish yourself from other job candidates.

  • You can use your given first name or your shortened first name. However, it is not advisable to use a nickname. It leads to formation of opinions.

  • Your name should be at the top. It should be able to stand out. You can make your name a larger than the rest of the fonts. Or bold your name. Or both. You can center your contact details or align it to the right.

HIRATION PROTIP: For your work profiles, it’s the industry standard to align your location and time period to the right

  • Leave a space or horizontal line between the end of your contact information and the next section of your resume.

It Poses A Security Risk

If youre applying for your job through a third party, like a job search board, you may feel apprehensive about writing your address because youre not sure how many people will have access to your resume.

If this causes you to feel unsafe, or if you would like to go through more privacy protections before disclosing your address, exercise your right to abstain from giving out your address.

One concern you may not have considered when deciding whether to write your address on your resume is the possibility of identity theft. If youre worried about this happening to you, check out the Identity Theft Resource Centers tips on protecting your identity while job searching.

Anything That Makes Your Resume More Than Two Pages

12

Unless you have a Ph.D. and are writing an academic CV or unless youve been working for 10-15+ years your resume should not be more than two pages.

For 60-70% of people, your resume should only be one page.

So focus on whats most important and keep the length short.

As a recruiter, Id rather see 8 specific skills that are relevant to the job Im hiring for, rather than a list of 30 general skills that youve used throughout your career but might not be relevant to the job. So make your resume laser-focused and target their needs!

Required Vs Optional Address Information

If youre applying for a job with the federal government, your home address is required information. Many other government and civil service jobs also require a permanent address.

For jobs where local residency is a requirement, an address will be expected on your resume.

Some employers may specify where they want applicants to live when they post a job opening. For example: Must live in Metro New York area or Must live in North Carolina. If the job posting specifies a location, make it easy for the recruiter to learn where you live by including your address on your resume.

Some job postings specify that only candidates who provide a resume and cover letter will be considered. If your resume is lacking information, such as your address, that the hiring manager expects to see, you may be knocked out of contention for the job before you even get a chance to interview.

How To Address A Cover Letter Without A Name

If youve exhausted all your options and still cant find the hiring managers name, or youre not positive its the right name and dont want to risk addressing the wrong person, dont worry.

There are plenty of ways to address your cover letter if you dont know the name of the hiring manager. Here are the most common ways to address your cover letter to an unknown person:

  • Dear Sir/Madam
  • To Whom It May Concern
  • Dear Human Resources Director
  • Dear Hiring Manager

Additionally, if you want to add a personal touch, address your cover letter to your prospective department or manager. For example, Dear Customer Service Department,.

Addressing your cover letter with To Whom It May Concern is considered old fashioned, so in most cases its best to use Dear Sir/Madam. However, its unlikely that any employer will hold your cover letter salutation against you, so theres no actual wrong choice.

Anything That Isnt Easily Recognizable

When someone sees your email, you want them to look at it. That will be more likely if they can quickly know who it is from. Dont make your email address something that could apply to a thousand other people.

Dont include:

  • Your profession instead of your name: there are far more people with the same profession than the same name
  • Hobbies such as sports or favorite shows/music
  • Your kids or pets name

More Soft Skills Than Hard Skills

As mentioned earlier, employers have a preference for seeing hard skills on a resume. The right place to highlight soft skills is your cover letter or in an interview, where you can better demonstrate communication skills, interpersonal skills, active listening, and more.

So as you review your resume, its a problem if you find many soft skills but few hard skills and job-related skills.

In fact, you should be looking to highlight these job-related skills in practically every resume section, starting with your resume summary paragraph.

Other Things I Would Avoid:

  • Nothing desperate
  • No numbers. I wouldnt include any numbers if you can help it because they can be easy to mix up and harder to remember. If no name variations are available, and you need to put a number after your name, pick as few as possible. Also, remember no birth or graduation years.
  • No locations. I wouldnt put my city or state because that could be limiting when applying for jobs online.

Beautiful Resume Templates To Land Your Dream Job

Adding your address to a resume is a traditional expectation from hiring managers.

But what is the expectation for more modern resumes?

The answer ultimately depends on several factors, including:

  • The location of the job
  • Whether the job description specifically asks for an address
  • How relevant the address is to the job

A hiring manager is unlikely to communicate via physical mail, so they are also unlikely to use your address as a method for contacting you.

Instead, employers will likely use addresses as a point of reference for:

  • Where an applicant lives
  • The applicantâs proximity to the job
  • Whether or not the applicant will need to relocate
