A resume should be one page most of the time. One-page resumes are recommended for candidates with just a few years of work experience and those who are only starting out on the job market. Your resume can be longer than one page only when you have 10+ years of experience or lots of relevant professional achievements.

What Exactly Should I Put On My Resume And What Should I Leave Out

Here are five things you should consider leaving off of your resume:

  • Objective statement. One of the most common questions jobs seekers have about writing a resume is whether they should include an objective.
  • Hobbies.
  • Dont forget your qualifications.
  • Tailor it to the application.
  • Keep it up to date.

    Types Of Cover Letters

    Application Letters

An application letter is written when applying to a job or internship. Along with a resume, it typically accompanies a job application form. The main difference between application cover letters and prospecting cover letters is that an application letter is written for a specific job or internship position.

    Prospecting Letter

A prospecting letter is used to inquire about possible opportunities when none are advertised. It is also sent with a resume, but does not address a specific job opening. When writing a prospecting letter, you should state specific knowledge of and interest in the company or program you are inquiring about, then describe the skills and knowledge you offer that could add value to the company.

Should I Staple My Resume For A Job Fair

Resumes should never be stapled when handed out at a job fair or to any employer in general. Stapled resumes are despised by most employers because they are difficult to take apart. Use paper clips if necessary or keep your resume to one-page when presenting it at a job fair.

Never under any circumstance should you hand an employer a stapled resume.

Consider this one of the golden rules of job hunting, because there are no exceptions.

Especially at a job fair when an employer may get hundreds of resumes, yours should never be stapled.

    Staple Keyword In Printer Files

You use this record-level keyword tospecify that a stapling operation should be performed within the spooledfile.

The stapling operation must be defined on the CORNERSTPL,EDGESTITCH, or SADLSTITCH parameters on the CRTPRTF, CHGPRTF, or OVRPRTFcommands. If no stapling is defined on the printer file, then theSTAPLE keyword is ignored. If you do not specify the STAPLE keyword, the entire spooled file will be stapled according to the definitionon the EDGESTITCH, SADLSTITCH, or CORNERSTPL parameters.

    Theformat of the keyword is:

    STAPLE

Whena STAPLE keyword is processed, the printer ejects a page, and allprevious pages that have been stacked since the last staple operationare stapled together. This includes pages that were processed sincethe beginning of the spooled file, since the last STAPLE keyword wasissued, or since stapling resumed after the last STAPLE was issued.

Forexample, for simple printing, if the STAPLE keyword where issued atthe beginning of page 5, then the previous 4 pages are stapled together. Some printers might not support the stapling of a single page.

Theoptional off-on stapling indicator specifies whether stapling shouldbe turned off within the spooled file.

STAPLE, SKIP, and SPACE keywords are processedin the following order:

    SKIPBSPACEBSTAPLESPACEASKIPA

Option indicators are valid for this keyword.Only one STAPLE keyword for each record format is valid at any time.

Can You Use A Paper Clip On A 2

If you have enough relevant experience to warrant a 2-page resume, you may use a paper clip to hold the pages together at a job fair. Paper clips are easily removable, are common to offices, and can be re-used. Use a plain silver paper clip at the top-left corner of the resume.

Between the choices of stapling, having two loose-leaf pages, or using a paper clip for a resume at a job fair, paper clips are the best option for 2-page resumes.

Employers will not hurt their hands trying to remove a paper clip, and they are easy to notice so that they are unlikely to end up damaging a shredder.

Unlike with digital email attachments, the downside of physical paper clips is that they tend to leave unsightly marks on the top of the resume page, especially when placed in a stack.

This is not a deal-breaker for most employers, but it does make a resume look worse compared to a pristine single-page resume.

The safest option when using paper clips is to go with a medium-small silver clip.

Non-traditional colors like pink or green may be appreciated in graphic design or animation jobs, but it is best to keep your resume as generic as possible for a job fair.

Stick to the classic silver so that your resume is taken seriously by all.

Other times, job applicants who want to stand out from the crowd mail in their application materials to prospective employers to make sure their resumes and cover letters don’t sit unread in a general email inbox.

Where Are You In The Resume Development Process

Your resume is a dynamic record of your achievements, which means it is always changing. Your resume should change throughout your college career as you gain new experiences and acquire new skills. For example, a freshman applying to become an Orientation Leader might have a different resume than a junior looking for a summer internship at a global company. When beginning your resume, its important to know where you are in your educational career so that you can match your resume to fit your needs.

    • Freshmen & SophomoresAs a freshman, you might not have a lot to put on your resume, but if you stay involved on campus and work hard to gain professional experience and internships, your resume will gradually fill up. Since you wont have many college experiences yet, it is fine to include your high school extracurricular activities on your resume until you get your first college level internship. Remember that even a seemingly small job can reflect a valuable trait in you, and is appropriate for a resume. For example: being a math tutor teaches patience and presentation skills. A busboy learns responsibility, timeliness and the importance of quality.

    Add Your Business Card

If you want to be an even more competitive job candidate, buy a folder that holds business cards and include yours in the designated spot. You’ll likely have to go to an office supply store for such a folder or else order a bundle online.

If you don’t have business cards, order some. They’re relatively inexpensive. You may be wondering what to put on your business card if you’re out of work, but even if you’re not on staff at a particular company, the business card can include your name, email address, cell phone number, and your preferred title, such as consultant, writer, artist, attorney, educator or accountant.

Never Staple Your Resume And Other Sins Of The Job Hunt

    Follow

I recently attended a job fair. Not because I was looking for work I am, as of 4:19 p.m. on March 20, 2007, still, to my knowledge, employed. I went on assignment to talk to a particular set of jobseekers. I cant tell you who just yetnot until my story meets its usual fate, bludgeoned to a mangy pulp and left for dead in the morgue we keep here at TIME for stories that never see the light of print.

But I thought to mention the job fair because one jobseeker I interviewed proudly handed me her résumé, the first shed written perhaps ever.

As you might guess, there was a lot I could fault in that résumé. The thing that jumped out at me, though, was the staple.

Thats right. This eager, talented and experienced jobseeker had committed the cardinal sin of the job hunt: shed submitted a two-page résumé.

If I could figure out how to do audio on this blog, this is where Id enter a horror-movie shriek. Ill substitute text: AIIEEEEEE!

Hm. Not quite the same effect.

Anyway, imagine my surprise when I opened my e-mail this morning to read this release from staffing company Accountemps: Survey Shows Longer Resumes Becoming More Acceptable.

While more than half of executives polled believe a single page is the ideal length for a staff-level resume, 44% said they prefer two pages.

    What? They prefer two pages?!

Okay, so it wasnt that deep a thought. Whatever.

All that said, Accountemps does include a rather helpful list of dos and donts in resume writing:
