Employment History Resume Sample: Your March Of Progress
Reverse chronological order is a great way to demonstrate your career progress within your employment history and it is the most commonly used resume sample format. If you are choosing to enlist right out of high school, this section will be short, but remember that part-time or volunteering you worked at during school tells recruiters that you can handle responsibility and care about your community.
Your employment history gives recruiters a detailed look at what you have accomplished and how. A simple list of responsibilities is not as powerful as a recounting of how you have solved problems or created benefit for your employers. Try to illustrate a progression of knowledge and responsibilities from your first job on. If you are changing careers , include the skills and accomplishments that best demonstrate your value to the military.
Use the CAR method to create your bullet points by spelling out a challenge, explaining the action you took to solve it, and using data or details to tell the results you achieved.

Keep these things in mind when describing your military experience during your interview:

On the other hand, some civilian employers might be hesitant to bring up your military background out of nervousness.
In either case, a balance is necessary make sure it gets brought up, but dont let it take things over.
Keep things relevant. If you have a decade or more of military experience, remember that the rules are the same as with civilian job experience talk about the most relevant thing first. Its not super useful to talk about your early training if youve been in the Armed Forces for a dozen or so years.
If the questions someone is asking regarding your service are inappropriate or too personal, dont be afraid to shut them down. Your military experience is your own, and not for them to dissect bring up whats relevant, and make sure they respect your privacy about the rest.

How To Format Your Letter Correctly
In your diligence to make your letter sound right, dont underestimate the importance of how it looks. And above all, beware of sending it in a file format that your recipient cant even open.
Use one-inch margins on both sides, top and bottom. Choose a modern, commonly used font thats easy to read, and use a font size of 10 to 12 points. Align your paragraphs left , and insert a space between them.
Keep your paragraphs a reasonable length to avoid big blocks of black text. Look at the text youre reading right now after every two to four sentences, theres a return that allows you to take a breath, that gives your eyes a break. Imagine if this guide were written in one continuous paragraph of wall-to-wall text. You probably wouldnt still be reading.
When you think youre finished with your letter, take a look at the entire page without reading it. Is it pleasing to the eye? Does it include enough white space? Is it visually balanced, or is it too dense, too sparse or too top-heavy?
Your first draft of your letter will probably be too long. Its actually easier to write a two-page letter than a one-page letter. Its also tempting to cram a wordy letter onto one page by reducing font size or margins, or by turning two short paragraphs into one long one.
Resist these urges and focus on trimming the fat from your copy. Less is more.
What Skills Do You Need To Find A Job In A Seaport
In some ways, working in many of the different jobs in seaports isn’t all that different to working in maritime jobs at sea. In particular, a lot of the personal qualities needed by an employee on shore are the same as a seafarer.
Namely an eye for detail, punctuality and integrity. And often physical strength and determination.
It goes without saying that safety awareness is an absolute must in the maritime industry and anyone working in one of the many positions in a port needs to be aware of their responsibility towards not only crew mates and co-workers, but also the vessels and cargo they work with too.
That boils down to having a responsible and safety-conscious attitude, and the people skills and desire to work as a team.
In relation to this, good communication skills are always a big plus. In the maritime industry even the smallest miscommunication or instance of something getting lost in translation can cause real, and very serious, issues.
With that in mind, if you can speak two or more useful languages, you could be a real asset.
We’ve already covered the need for you to be strong and healthy in many shore based maritime jobs and manual labor and heavy lifting may be a big part of your job, depending on what position you apply for.

How To Identify The Transferable Military Skills For Your Resume
No two military careers are the same. But all transitioning service members gain valuable skills in the military that are transferable to civilian lives and jobs.
Jeff Stock is a Program Manager at Upwork. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps for almost nine years, he transitioned to a civilian role. According to him, âOne of the biggest challenges veterans face is understanding how their military ranks and responsibilities translate to a civilian scenario.â
Similarly, he found hiring managers often could not understand military titles and the responsibilities that come with these roles.
âUnderstanding military ranks and job responsibilities can be a big puzzle even for experienced hiring managers. Veterans have many valuable skills. However, their challenge lies in being able to expose these military skills on a resumeâin a way that makes sense to civilian hiring managers,â said Stock.
For example, when interviewing for program manager roles, Stock found mentioning his military title alone was meaningless. Instead, he found, âmost interviewers were looking for a one-to-one match for the role they were hiring for.â
Stock realized he needed to present his military experience in a context that made sense in the private sector to address this disconnect. Instead of focusing on his specific military rank alone, he learned to emphasize his job function and responsibilities in civilian terms more.
