How To Make A Resume From Your Linkedin Profile

LinkedIn lets you easily turn your profile into a downloadable PDF to use as a resume. Here’s how…

Have you tailored your LinkedIn profile into one of the most captivating and professional ones around? Then perhaps it’s time you stopped thinking about writing fresh CVs each time you need to apply for a new job.

LinkedIn has a built-in feature that lets you build a resume from your profile. In this article, we explain how to make a resume from your LinkedIn profile and download it to your PC.

How To Save Your Linkedin Profile As A Pdf

You can also save your LinkedIn profile directly as a PDF without using the resume builder. To do this, use the following steps:

  • Go to your LinkedIn profile and click on More.
  • From the options, select Save to PDF to download your profile to your PC without the edit option.

It’s important to note that downloading your profile is different from building a resume. You can’t change or remove any section by merely saving your profile to PDF.

To do that, you need to use the resume builder option.

Manually Tracking Applicants Bad Idea

Maybe you are currently tracking applications manually, copying and pasting applicants information into a tool like Excel.

This is not a workable solution for several reasons:

  • Time intensive. Calculate the time spent on manually tracking candidates multiplied by the number of candidates. You may be horrified by the result.
  • Costly. Multiply the time spent manually tracking candidates by the cost of your HR team. It may be more than you are willing to spend for such a low added value activity.
  • Error prone. Ever had the case of missing an email or wrongly copying the data? You don’t want your company to look bad and often the first contact with a company is a deciding factor for an applicant.
  • What if you could automate processing of LinkedIn job applications received by email for a fraction of the effort and cost you are currently spending?

How To Use Your Linkedin Profile To Complement Your Resume

A better strategy than simply using your LinkedIn profile as a resume is to use it as the launching point for a position-specific, customized resume.

One of the luxuries of LinkedIn is that you have almost infinite space for listing all of the great things youve done in past roles, along with other skills and achievements.

Our advice is to take advantage of this space, especially since your resume space is more constrained.

Develop your LinkedIn profile to be a robust, comprehensive account of your professional qualifications.

Then, when it comes to applying for a specific job, you can pull the bits and pieces from your LinkedIn profile that you feel are relevant to the position for which you are applying. Of course, some tweaking may be necessary.

Once you have a customized resume be sure you include a link to your LinkedIn profile on your resume. That way, you can encourage a recruiter to discover even more about you.

    Press Download Pdf Button

Now your LinkedIn resume is downloaded to the your mobile device in PDF format. You can also choose to download in word format by pressing the Download Word button.

You can choose many templates from the gallery and choose to download a LinkedIn resume in that customized resume template.

As you see in the image below your LinkedIn profile picture also gets downloaded and automatically attached to the template. You can choose to show or not in the resume from settings.

I made this because I wanted a way to quickly generate a JSON Resume export from my LinkedIn profile, and got frustrated with how locked down the LinkedIn APIs are and how slow it is to request your data export . “Install” the tool to your browser, then click to run it while looking at a LinkedIn profile , and my code will grab the various pieces of information off the page and then show a popup with the full JSON resume export that you can copy and paste to wherever you would like.

npm run build-browserext will transpile and copy all the right files to ./build-browserext, which you can then side-load into your browser. If you want to produce a single ZIP archive for the extension, npm run package-browserext will do that.

Use build-browserext-debug for a source-map debug version. To get more console output, append li2jr_debug=true to the query string of the LI profile you are using the tool with.

How To Upload Your Resume To LinkedIn – Quick and Easy

I want to make something clear: the only goal of this extension is to be able to export a JSON Resume version of your LinkedIn profile nothing more, nothing less.

If the tool is malfunctioning or could do a better job of exporting JSON Resume, by all means please open an issue – I always appreciate it!

However, I have gotten several feature requests asking me to extend the tool to do things that are far outside this goal. While I appreciate the interest, ultimately I am not interested in having this project grow outside the original scope – you will usually see me close this issues as wontfix and will reply to emails the same way. I have limited time, and this project was originally something I whipped up in a few days for personal use – it has already gotten way out of scope ð

Best Practices For Setting Up Your Linkedin Profile

Before you start directing potential employers to your LinkedIn page, there are two steps you should take.

    A) Make yourself easy to find

Like most social media websites, LinkedIn has a variety of different privacy and visibility options. When you go to your LinkedIn profile page, in the top right corner, you will find a button called Edit public profile & URL.

This is where you will find the options to select what elements of your profile can be viewed by whom, including your LinkedIn contacts, other LinkedIn members, or the general public who may come across your profile through Google searches.

Here you also have the option to create a short, customized URL for your LinkedIn profile. It will follow the format of www.linkedin.com/in/NAME. Its a good idea to change this from the long, default link.

Try to select something concise so that its easy for recruiters to remember and that it fits nicely when included on your resume or other social media accounts.

Creating inbound links to your LinkedIn profile by adding your profile link on your personal social accounts, blog or other websites will provide additional avenues for companies and recruiters to discover you.

    B) Perfect your LinkedIn profile content

Assume that every recruiter is going to eventually find their way to your LinkedIn profile. With this in mind, you want to put your best foot forward. Like your resume, your LinkedIn profile should stand out in order to make a lasting impression.

    Get Endorsements And Recommendations

One of the elements you almost certainly wont be able to add to your resume is a series of endorsements from current or past co-workers.

However, on LinkedIn, when you add a certain skill to your profile, you can also be endorsed for that skill by people in your network. These endorsements can offer confirmation to potential employers that you practice what you preach.

You can ask your LinkedIn contacts to endorse you for these skills, or you can ask them to write a more complete recommendation that will go on your profile.

This recommendation feature is a great way to build your credibility and will complement any formal references that you may have to provide as part of a job application.
