Match Your Qualifications To The Job

How to Search for Resumes on Indeed | Indeed US

Once you have assembled a detailed list of the qualifications for your target job, review each item on the list and try to think of how you might prove that you possess that asset. Write a sentence about as many of the qualifications as possible, detailing how you used that skill or exhibited that quality in a work, volunteer, academic, or co-curricular role.

Whenever possible, point to any positive results or recognition you received while applying the skill. For example, if a job requires strong writing skills, you might say:

While working as a campaign intern, I wrote press releases about the candidate’s platform, which resulted in two articles in the local media.

Best For Local Jobs And Gigs: Craigslist

Craigslist

Craigslist started as an email newsletter in 1995 and became the website it is today the following year. Craigslist now reaches 700 cities in over 70 countries and is one of the most popular websites in the United States. We chose Craigslist as our top choice for local jobs because you can easily post your information and reach your local area, akin to posting flyers in your city or neighborhood.

Craigslist has a Resumes section, where you can post a description of your work and experience, the hours youre available to work, your ZIP code, education level, and contact info.

Its free to post a resume if youre seeking employment, but if you decide to post as a service provider, Craigslist fees start at $10 per listing. Once your posting goes live, it will remain on Craigslists resume section for 30 days. After 30 days, you will need to create another listing.

You can also post your resume outside of your immediate area by visiting other cities Craigslist pages to find remote-friendly gigs and jobs.

Craigslist is actively used to find talent across many major industries such as finance, marketing, general labor, domestic work, IT, education, and writing. While Craigslist is an easy way to put your info out there, be wary of these common job scams once you receive emails from potential employers.

Tips To Speed Up Searching For Jobs On Indeed

INFOGRAPHIC: Matching your resume to the job you want ...

If you’re searching for a new job on Indeed, you’ll likely want to find the role as soon as possible. So, here are nine tips to help you do so.

Searching for the right job on Indeed is not as easy as it seems. As Indeed lists hundreds of jobs every day, it’s really challenging to find relevant jobs and apply for them.

To make your job hunt easier, we’ve listed nine tips and tricks for searching for jobs on Indeed.

How To Start Searching For Jobs

When you visit Indeed, you will see a simple search engine where you can enter keywords to find job vacancies. Enter terms like job titles, company names, career fields, skills, and certifications in the box labeled What and cities, zip codes, or states in the box labeled Where.

After entering keywords, click on Find Jobs to the right of the search boxes to generate a list of jobs matching the terms you entered.

Include Resume Scanner Keywords Organically

Incorporate keywords into your resume organically by replacing general words and phrases with specific ATS keywords whenever you can. ATS software will reject applications that use keyword stuffing in attempts to fool it, so simply adding a list of stock keywords to your resume will actually hurt your chances. Your resume must be readable and not just searchable.

Keep in mind that you are doing all of this to get your resume into human hands, so be sure it is legible, well-organized and concise. You have to strike a balance between using ATS keywords and natural language on your resume for the best results.

What To Include In The Education Section

These days, its common for education to be listed at the end of your resume. Exceptions to this may be if youre applying for jobs that require specific certifications , or if you have recently graduated from school.

In the education section of your resume, list all of the relevant degrees or certifications that make you qualified for this job. If you have attained a university degree, list your degree type and field of study followed by the name of your educational institution and the city and state. Unless youre a recent graduate, you dont need to list your graduation date. For example:

Bachelor of Psychological ScienceUniversity of Adelaide, Adelaide, SA

Master of Cardiac Sonography

Other Search Options Available

How to Find Jobs that Match Your Skills – Jobscan Job Recommendations and Job Matcher

As you have seen above, Indeed offers many other options for specifying exactly the job you want. Depending on the search you do, the buttons available at the top of search results will change to include options appropriate for that kind of job.

For example, if you are searching for a job which requires a license or other certification, like a Certified Public Accountant, the buttons at the top of the search results will include options like License and Standards.

Salary is one of the search options available and a very important consideration for any job, but, in general, employers are reluctant to include salary ranges for their jobs. So be aware that Indeed very likely must use salary information provided by current and former employees and not by the employer.

Review And Tweak Your Resume

Review your existing resume and make sure that you have incorporated as many statements about the preferred qualifications for the target job as possible. List the highest-priority phrases at the beginning of your descriptions to get the most attention.

If you have a couple of jobs that are more qualifying than others, you might develop a lead category towards the top of your resume, like “Related Experience” .

Take a few minutes to update the descriptions of the positions you’ve held. Jazzing up your resume job descriptions can make your resume much more impressive.

The Difference Between Interests And Hobbies

Interests are often the activities you do in your spare time that involve dedication and translate directly into a professional setting. For example, volunteering for an organization would be an interest.

Hobbies are activities that you usually do for fun during your leisure time. For example, stamp collecting is a hobby. Usually, you would not include hobbies in your resume unless they relate directly to the role. A car mechanic could list rebuilding classic cars as a hobby.

How Does Indeed Work

Indeed works by compiling thousands of job postings into one easily searchable platform. Anyone can search for job postings or companies, create a free account and apply to open positions. You can even upload a resume to your Indeed profile and make it searchable so that potential employers can find you.

To begin, visit Indeed.com and create a free account. Youll just have to enter your email address and create a password to get started. While you dont have to create an account to search for and apply for jobs, I still recommend making one. Youll most likely be applying to more than one job, and having an account makes it easy to save your resume, keep track of where youve applied and communicate with potential employers.

From Indeeds homepage, you can begin searching for the type of job youre looking for. Indeed is a great place to search for and apply to jobs in addition to researching companies and salaries.

You can click the Company reviews tab on the top of the page to look for a specific company. You can search by company name, job title or location. Finally, you can click Find salaries to explore which careers have the highest job satisfaction, best salaries and more.

Indeed maintains a good relationship with companies and employers by making it easy to post and promote job listings. In fact, this is how Indeed makes its money. While jobs can be posted for free , sponsored listings rank higher in searches.

Monitor Your Application Status

Resume Examples Indeed

During your job search, its pretty easy to forget how many jobs you have applied to and how many of them have responded. The good news is, Indeed gives a simple way for you to track your jobs.

On the My Jobs page, you can see the jobs that you’ve saved, applied for, or have been interviewed for. Using this feature, you can monitor your job statuses and organize your applications in a single place.

Employers Could Get Better At How They Hire

Not being able to fill roles is a problem for employers, too, and there are a number of things employers can do to make sure theyre getting the talent they need . So while were at it, some tips for companies looking to hire:

  • Update and fix the criteria your AI is using. Rather than looking for people who have exactly the skills in the job description, look for those who have attributes similar to your best employees those who are most productive or whove stayed with the company longest. This also means making sure your algorithm isnt unnecessarily excluding huge swaths of candidates, including parents whove stepped out of the workforce to care for kids, people with criminal backgrounds, or those with gaps in their employment. Fuller has some in-depth suggestions on what to do in his report.
  • Update job descriptions. Make sure job listings are up to date and that they focus on the core skills the person absolutely needs. This requires involving the person whos directly supervising or working with the candidate to weigh in on whats needed for the job.
  • Relax education or other requirements. Hire someone who hits seven out of 10 of your requirements, instead of 10 out of 10, Indeed director of economic research Nick Bunker said. Sometimes what they find out is that people can do the job quite well but dont hit all of their high metrics.
  • Provide on-the-job training. Plenty of people could do the job if only they had a little instruction.

Why Is A Skills Section On Your Resume Important

The skills section of a resume is important because it goes beyond your educational qualifications or training. The skills section allows an employer to determine if you’re a good fit for their organization and the role. For entry-level positions, employers may consider the skills section a more important factor for hiring than experience. As you progress in your career, new skills, like leadership skills, can be developed. Additional reasons why a skills section is important include:

  • It differentiates you from your competitors.
  • It helps define what value you can bring to a company.
  • It gives you a chance to match your skills to the company’s job description.

Use Indeeds Robust Filtering Options To Narrow Down Results

Online Job Applications: What Happens After You Submit Your Resume

To narrow down our results to a manageable number, we used Indeeds filtering tools. The filter options are listed in the left-hand column after you make a search.

The first two filtering options are by distance and last updated date:

Indeed filters and sorting criteria

  • Distance Within how many miles of your city do you want to search for applicants? The last thing you want is to get excited about a candidate who winds up having an unrealistic commute to your office .
  • Shows resumes that have been updated in the last day, week, month, or all resumes regardless of how old they are.

The remainder of the search criteria focus on filtering for job specific information:

Criteria Used to Filter Our Resume Search

To narrow down digital marketing resumes for Fit Small Business, we made several adjustments:

  • We set the distance to 5 miles. New York City is a big place and our candidates will likely need to be within the 5 boroughs to be within commuting distance.
  • We left last updated to within last month so wed likely get job seekers who are still available.
  • We looked only for those who want full time work.
  • We wanted them to have at least 3 years of experience.
  • We wanted only those with a bachelors degree.
  • Indeed search results showing filtering criteria used

We wanted to see only the most relevant resumes first, so we left the Sort by option on relevance, which is the default. At the top of the left hand column, you can choose to sort candidates in one of two ways:

    Is My Information Safe

Most sites will allow you to choose whether you want your resume to be public. If you don’t want your resume to be viewed by just anyone, do your research to see exactly who will be able to access it.

Most sites will block out your street address along with your email and phone number which will be visible only to employers you apply or respond to.

Let’s go into more detail about uploading your resume to Indeed.

Once you upload your resume to Indeed, you will have the option of making your resume either public or private.

Remember that if you do make your resume private, it won’t be visible to potential employers. Unless you don’t want anyone to know you’re searching for a job, we suggest making it public so hiring managers could reach out to you. Also remember that your information are not shared publicly.

You shouldn’t even be including your full address on a resume in the USA–only your city, state, and zip code.

Make A List Of Keywords That Match Your Skills

Next, you can use the list of keywords you found in the job posting to identify areas where you meet the job posting’s requirements. It’s important to be truthful in this process by only listing skills or experience you truly have. You can use these keywords in your resume to pass an ATS scan and show an employer how your skills match the open position.

For example, if a candidate has previous experience with managing content calendars for social media posts as a marketing employee, you can make sure to emphasize that experience on your resume.

Here is a list of example keywords that we’ll incorporate in a resume that matches the example job posting:

    • Five years of experience

Match Your Resume Content With The Job Description

Now that you understand a bit about what the company wants, look at your resume.

You want to tailor your resume to the job description, starting by matching the most important things on the job description with the most visible areas on your resume.

Make the first few bullet points under each previous job on your resume be as relevant as possible. Your resume employment history is one of the first places recruiters and hiring managers look, so its one of the most important areas to tailor!

If youre looking for your first job, you can tailor your education and other related experience instead. Same concept.

If the job description emphasized leadership, dont talk about all your individual accomplishments first. Instead, put a bullet point that mentions any leading youve done taking the lead on projects, training, supervising others. No matter how small, find a way to demonstrate leadership!

Then you can list your individual accomplishments.

Maybe the individual part was 90% of your last role, and leadership was only 10%. It doesnt matter, mention the leadership first, just like the job description did.

If you have multiple positions on your resume, tailor all of them.

If you have an objective or summary section in your resume, tailor that too! Look at how the company describes the overall role and match your summary with that description.
