Identify Your Current Gpa

Should I put my graduation years on my resume?

Although not required, some employers prefer seeing grade point averages for those still in school. Your average tells them what kind of student you are and how seriously you take your studies. School performance often reflects work performance. However, only include your GPA if it’s 3.0 or above. If your GPA is on the verge of that average, wait until you receive a new report.

Identify The Exact Graduation Date

Depending on the institution, graduation dates are often in flux depending on a wide variety of factors. For example, some fast-paced programs offer multiple graduation date opportunities. The date can also change due to poor grades in the final semester. Identify your exact graduation date when you’re able and record it for later use.

What Is An Expected Graduation Date

An expected graduation date is the day, month, and year you are scheduled to graduate from college. The purpose of an expected graduation date is to let employers know that youll be fulfilling the education requirements needed for the job by the time the role needs to be filled. While youre still in school, this information should be placed above your work experience section on your resume.

For a straightforward approach, you could simply write the name of your degree and then your expected graduation date in parenthesis. For example, a psychology student may write “Bachelor of Science in Psychology .”

The school and its city and state should be written below the course and expected graduation date. Below this, you could also list your grade point average, if it’s at least 3.0.

The same science student could take another common approach and write an expected graduation date in the following way: “XYZ University: Candidate for B.S. in Psychology, GPA 3.5, expected to graduate in May 2027.”

Prioritize Your Education Section If You Have Little Work Experience

If you are still in school, your education is more relevant to a recruiter than your work experience as most students have not yet worked much.

In that case, put your Education portion on top, right after your professional summary, and add the Work Experience underneath.

If you have acquired enough relevant work experience, you can switch the order.

How to Write a Great Resume

Your resume should list your work experience succinctly and clearly for the reader. Employers have many resumes to go through in a short time, and you dont want them to stumble as they read your resume.

That said, write the dates in full ranges, for example, March 2019 to November 2020.Most job seekers leave out months in their resume format, which is a bad idea during your job search.

You need to make sure that your resume dates include months to make them as straightforward as possible both for the hiring manager and applicant tracking systems .

Additionally, youd want to add your graduation year or the dates when you got any certifications.

Finally, dont use numbers to represent months. For example, dont use 3 to represent March or 12 to represent December. While using this technique isnt incorrect, it just gives the ATS and recruiters a hard time processing the dates.

Remember, recruiters go through many resumes, and the chances are that they are already fatigued.

You Earned Your Degree More Than 15 Years Ago

If you earned a degree or certification more than 15 years ago, place your Education at the bottom of your resume, and remove the graduation date. It’s important to demonstrate you’ve earned the degree, but there’s no need to draw attention to how long ago this occurred.

Doing so will allow you to focus your resume on your skills, accomplishments, and professional history. For those who have many years of professional experience, education becomes less important because you should be moving forward in your career.

What Should You Include On Your Resume When You Havent Finished Your Degree

How do you address your incomplete education on your resume in a way that looks positive to potential employers?

If youre still pursuing your degree or certification, then you should absolutely include this information on your resume.

Especially if the position requires whatever degree or certification youre pursuing. There are two great ways to handle including this information on your resume:

    1. State the college youre attending

    2. The degree youre pursuing

    3. Your area of study

    4. Current GPA

    5. Include your anticipated graduation date this is very important if your graduation date is within the next 12 months.

It could look something like this:

University of North Florida, Jacksonville, FLBachelors of Science Degree, Communications/Public RelationsGPA 4.0Anticipated graduation date: May 2021

    Graduation Dates On Your Resume

I read a couple resumes recently that had unusual graduation dates. The dates listed detracted from the impression the resume made.

    Six Years of High School

A candidate with a bachelors degree and 40+ year career listed his high school on his resume. With a bachelors degree, there is no need to list high school. This isnt a major problem though. The problem was range of dates. The high school listing had the dates 1961-1967, a six year time period. I dont know if this was a typo, if the school system considered high school to be 7th through 12th grades, if the candidate had repeated a couple years or if there was another explanation.

Including the dates raises a question that is meaningless. The candidates performance in high school more than forty years ago has nothing to do with their capability today. Additionally, including the range of dates makes no sense. It is generally assumed if you include a single date, it is the graduation date. Finally, many older workers report instances of age discrimination. Highlighting your age with a high school graduation date cant help your search, and may hurt it.

    Super Fast Bachelors

Employment dates are a critical element of a resume, but graduation dates are optional. Unless you are a recent graduate, drop your graduation dates. They will offer little value.

High School Resume: How To Write Your First Resume (For Teens)

Its not just older applicants who may want to refrain from providing their graduation year. Varelas notes that employers can be hesitant about hiring young people because theyre worried that these applicants, particularly millennials and members of Gen-Z, wont stay with the company for long.

Providing your graduation date could also spell trouble when applying for jobs with managerial-sounding titles, says Leavy-Detrick.

Since job titles are so fluid, she says, a 25-year-old could have all the requirements listed for a role that has the word “senior” in it. But if an employer sees that the applicant is just a few years out of school, they may discount the candidate because they appear too young for the position.

How To Put An Expected Graduation Date In A Resume

Most employers expect job applicants to supply a resume containing a summary of work experience and education. For soon-to-be graduates of a school or university, how to list an anticipated graduation date may be a bit confusing. Fortunately, there are really only a couple of ways to list expected graduation dates on a resume.

What Is The Meaning Of Anticipated Graduation Date

An anticipated graduation date is the month and year youre supposed to graduate. For most students, this is in May after their last of college. However, not all colleges and universities follow the same August to May schedule. Some students may graduate in June others may have taken a gap semester and finish their studies in January. Some students will graduate four years after they enrolled in their college or university, while others might take six or two. Regardless of when you started college, your anticipated graduation date is when youre expected to receive your diploma.

Job applications often ask your anticipated graduation date to gauge when youll be available for employment. Its important to be honest about this date so youre transparent about your commitments. An employer should know how much flexibility youll need in your schedule or if theyll be able to hire you full-time in the next year.

Options For Listing Education On A Resume

Not sure how to list your college degree on your resume? How should you list your expected graduation date if you’re an undergraduate student? What if you didn’t go to college? How about if you’ve already graduated? Alternatively, what do you do if you haven’t yet graduated but intend to complete your degree at some point in time?

Even if you didn’t graduate, there are options for presenting your educational background in a positive manner. An entry-level resume will often present more educational or training information than would a resume for someone who has been in the workforce for many years.

If you dont have a lot of work experience to prove your skills and capabilities on the job, it can be important to list any relevant college coursework, even if you didnt graduate with a degree.

Here are a few options for including your education, as well as for mentioning credit you have earned for college-level work on your resume even though you didn’t graduate.

What Do You Put On Your Resume If You Havent Graduated Yet

How to Present Your Anticipated Graduation Date on Your ...

If you havent graduated yet, that doesnt mean you dont have to include information about your education instead, you should prioritize it! At the very least, you should include the name of your school, its city and the month and year youre expected to graduate. You can also include your major or program of study, your GPA and any outstanding academic accomplishments youve made thus far some students list when they made the Deans list, for example.

Your anticipated graduation date can be written with a note that its expected or by simply as the date. For example, you can write Colby College or just Colby College, May 2022.

This information should all go into the Education section of your resume. Ideally, this information should be at the top of your resume. Once youve entered the workforce, it can be reordered and placed on the bottom of your resume, after your work experience.

    How To List Completed Education

Recent Graduate If youve recently graduated, place your education section before or in line with your work experience. Your schooling is likely the most prominent piece of your resume, so it is acceptable to make this one of the first sections for employers to see. You can also include your attendance dates, any honors received and GPA if above 3.4. If you attended multiple schools, include the most prominent one where you were most involved. Heres an example:

University of Hawaii, 20112016Bachelor of Arts in PsychologyBusiness Essentials CertificateTerry Scholar

Experienced Professional If youve been in the workforce for several years, move your education section below your professional experience. Your interviewers will be more interested in what youve achieved in recent years rather than in your academic career. You can also remove more specific details of your education section like attendance dates and GPA if youd like. The more you can create interest around your work experience, the better. If you have advanced degrees like your masters or PhD, include those in rank order of level . In this example, the candidate included two diplomas:

Atlanta Graduate School of Management | Atlanta, GAMasters of Business Administration Masters of Science in Information Systems

University of Georgia | Athens, GABachelors of Accountancy
