Customize Your Film Resume To The Job Post

How to Write a Film Production Resume

Avoid being generic in your resume and customize it to the production job to make a positive impression on employers. Every production job has different requirements.

Dont try to be a one size fits all candidate. Only showcase the skills relevant to the job you want.

Take note of the job listing, and focus on the job description and requirements. Overloading your resume with unnecessary information makes it difficult to read.

For example, a student film you edited may be relevant for a job in video editing, but if youre looking to be a location scout, then it may not be worth including.

Adjusting your resume to the job post shows the employer youre qualified. By contrast, if you include irrelevant information, then hiring managers may think you dont know what the job entails.

Your summary statement should be one or two sentences that provide an overview of who you are as a film director and what qualifications you have to offer employers. You can showcase your aptitude as a film director by mentioning some of your best characteristics and describing the desired impact of your filmmaking work.

Achieve The Ideal Film Resume Length

Your film resume should follow standard length guidelines. Most important, keep your resume to a single page.

Film production crews and staff work to tight project deadlines, so hiring managers dont have time to read a long or unorganized resume.

Unless you have more than 10 years of experience in the field, use a one-page resume. Use your resumes space effectively and cut irrelevant experience and skills to achieve this length.

Choose The Right Format For Your Resume

As you know from your work in film, great organization is the key to making sure shoots go well.

When it comes to resumes, the resume format is the way in which your resume is organized. Deciding on the best format before you write your resume is every bit as important as scouting scene locations or getting the right camera angle.

There are three common resume formats: chronological, functional and hybrid.

The big difference between these formats is where the main focus is placed in the resume, whether its on your work experience or if more weight is given to your skills and education.

Chronological formats best serve candidates who have at least five years experience working in the film industry. This format puts the emphasis on roles youve held, duties youve performed, and shows a career progression.

If you have the experience to use one, this should be your go-to format.

However, if youre fresh out of school or transferring from a different industry, you should choose a different format that is a better fit for your experience level.

Functional formats are recommended if you have less than two years experience as a film professional. This format gives greater emphasis on your skills and education, which takes attention away from your lack of experience.

The Film Production Cover Letter

Cover letters need only be short and simple. It is unlikely anyone will have the time to read a lengthy cover letter, a short paragraph saying who you are, what you do and why you are fit for the job is all that is needed.

Full-time, Contracted lifetime jobs working for companies will have a longer process . Major Companies will have a lengthy interview process and a more formal cover letter will be needed.

When you work on a film production, you work as a freelancer and these jobs hire people on a job by job basis.

In film you will be hired a few weeks before a production begins .

Producers are busy with so many different tasks they dont have the time for formal interviews. This is why film production resumes and cover letters need to be short and to the point.

How To Write a Film/TV Production Resume

I know that when I started out I wanted a true and tried way of making a film resume. But the reality is that theres a ton of different ways and different recruiters and employers have their preferences. It can suck trying to build a resume that pleases everyone, including yourself.

While there isnt one right way to create a resume, there are definitely wrong ways by not including crucial information, submitting a novel-length document, or sending a post-it note with your name on it.

While you should include specific information, you should also always keep your resume personal to you and allow your personality to shine through. No project is too small to include on your resume if it shows off what an awesome person you would be to have on set.

Why Is A Film Production Resume Needed

When you first start out working in the film industry you will have little to no contacts. Yes finding work in film is all about who knows who – however at the start of your career you will have to apply to jobs online, and you will be asked to show a resume every time you do so.

There is a general thought that a filmmaker does not need a resume since all of their work comes from word of mouth. This is more likely to happen later on in your career.

Film Production Resume Tips (PLUS Template)

Ive seen resumes that are 2 and even 3 pages long. Ive seen them with a handful of columns and rows, pictures, and graphs, and even some resumes that include hobbies and personal trivia. All of these different choices can seem unique and a fun way to stand out, but most of the time recruiters are turned away simply because they want to see specific components in your resume, and they arent interested in unique design choices – unless youre a designer.

In a more straight-froward industry, its probably a lot easier to construct a resume with certainty, but in a field where experience, creativity, professionalism, and personality or all valued at different heights it can be confusing on what to emphasis, and how to design your resume.

From colleagues to career advisors, Ive heard a swarm of different opinions on what a resume should look like and what it shouldnt be. Its no surprise that many people have contrary opinions and why there are so many different types of resumes. So if by the end of this blog post, you still want to have something quirky to make yourself stand out, just know some people will HATE it and some people will LOVE it, but Its up to you!

How To Write Your Cv And Cover Letter

Your CV is a summary of your work experience and qualifications. Its a chance to market yourself to potential employers and let them see at a glance how you might be able to help them. It’s up to you what you want to include in your CV and to decide what balance of personality and professionalism is right for you. However, most CVs will include:

  • Your name
  • Your contact details
  • A short personal introduction
  • Your key skills
  • Your work history
  • Your education, qualification and training
  • You may also want to include whether you have a valid driving licence or other similar licences

Make sure you keep your CV concise, no more than two A4 pages, and try to use a clear professional layout and spacing. Check your spelling and grammar – and then check it again. Avoid using long sentences. Employers will be looking for skills, experience and any new ideas or insights that you can bring.

Lack Of Clarity About Your Position

Film Resume: Sample & Writing Guide [20+ Tips]

Dont have a one-size-fits-all résumé, and dont try to be a jack-of-all-trades either. The rest of that saying is “master of none”. UPMs on real movies with real budgets, are looking for individuals to do specific jobs. Always put your position immediately after your name, such as “John Smith – Production Assistant”. Dont have “position sought” taking up space on the page.

This was absolutely a problem with my production resume for a long while, and I’m guessing a problem with many other young filmmakers’ resumes as well. It’s entirely too tempting to put down the fact that you’re an experienced sound man when, in reality, you held a boom on a student short 7 years ago. Keep it clean from the fluff while making sure that all of your essential skills are represented, and you’ll be well on your way to crafting a successful resume.
