Ive hired other product managers and reviewed thousands of product management resumes from job seekers across geographies, industries, and experience levels.

This guide is the culmination of my experience both as a product leader and recruiter. With it, my hope is to take away some of the pain that you might face in your job search.

I have crafted this post from the perspective of an employer rather than from the perspective of a product manager job seeker. Every employer has different needs and looks for different traits and skills. For that reason, Ive provided you with a flexible framework for how to showcase your true value proposition as a product.

That way, you can demonstrate your unique value in a crowded marketplace of product talent. In doing so, Ill provide examples of how to position your product manager skills . However, I wont provide a resume template for you to fill out. Thats because product managers are products, and every product has a unique go-to-market strategy.

At best, when you look at a resume template, you should treat it as a product manager resume sample. In other words, you should never copy someone elses go-to-market strategy, because it wont fit you well.

You shouldnt feel constrained in copying any particular resume format. Too often, I see candidates worrying about the following:

Overall Principles Of A Great Resume

Specific to the job: Every bullet point should be concrete and speak to your candidacy for the role. Remove filler or vague words . Every word should speak to your qualifications for the specific role you’re applying to.

Bad bullet point: Managed various social media channels for a multinational firm by being proactive, hard-working and excellent at communication.

Better bullet point: Led team of 3 to execute a referral program for a SaaS project, leading to $50,000 in new revenue and 120 new customers.

Impact: Ideally, every bullet point should show the outcome youve created

Bad bullet point: Led user research on our products

Better bullet point: Synthesized qualitative user research from 23 usability tests into actionable tickets in Visual Studio worked with engineers to improve the user experience and confirm the build meets the user specifications.

Simple: Please, please, please just choose a simple resume template . No fancy graphics, colours or multiple columns are necessary. The goal of your resume’s style is to be easily readable. You will not get “bonus points for cool logos or visuals.

Key idea: Each bullet point should be concise, show impact and be specific to the PM job. Dont include filler words, vague statements or fancy visuals.

Bad Pm Resume Examples

Although it is important to differentiate yourself and your resume from the competition, you still need to keep the recruiter reading your resume in mind. This recruiter is reading hundreds of resumes each day.

An overly colorful or creative resume can be hard on the eyes and poor formatting can make it difficult for the recruiter to find the information they are looking for in your resume. You want to stand out because of your skills and experience, not because of the color and structure of your resume.

They are responsible for guiding a cross-functional team to create, develop and implement a product. The term product most often refers to a service or item being sold to consumers and can be either virtual, physical or both.

List your past product management projects and experiences in one document. Include details about the role, your responsibilities, the product and the outcomes/results. While you wont be including all of these in your final resume, it is helpful to have a comprehensive list you can refer to each time you write a resume.

If you dont have experience, it might be difficult to get considered. Difficult, yes. Impossible, no! There are ways to circumvent the limitations of being inexperienced:

• Review your work history and highlight responsibilities or achievements that are aligned with the job of a Product Manager.
• Emphasize skills and training that are relevant or transferable to the job of a Product Manager.
• Identify skills that are mentioned in the job post.

Instead of the reverse chronological, shift to the Combination format. The sections of the resume would be rearranged this way:

• Contact Information
• Work Experience
• Personal Information

With the Combination format, use the resume objective to share your story with the Hiring Manager. Tell him why you decided to become a Product Manager. Doing so will help the Hiring Manager understand why you lack the necessary work experience for the position.

If you have experience with frameworks like AARRR, orioritization, or HEART or with methodologies like Agile, Kanban, Scrum, or Waterfall, make sure you include them on your resume, especially if theyre listed in a particular job posting. You can do this in a dedicated skills section and, better yet, put them in the context of the projects youve worked on.

Here, the trick is to showcase the transferable competencies you developed while in those positions. For example, if you were a software engineer, youd be tech-savvy, detail-oriented, and understand the Scrum framework all of which can help you as a product manager.
