Policy And Legislation On The Teacher Educator Profession

Registered Behavior Technician | Pay & Qualifications My Experience!

While schools and school teachers are often in the news and in political debate, research shows that the teacher educator profession is largely absent from such public discussions and from policy discourse in Education which often focuses exclusively on teachers and school leaders.

Some research suggests that, while most countries have policies, and legislation, in place concerning the teaching profession, few countries have a clear policy or strategy on the teacher educator profession. Caena found that some of the consequences of this situation can include a teacher educator profession that is poorly organised, has low status or low formal recognition, has few regulations, professional standards or even minimum qualifications, and no coherent approach to the selection, induction, or continuing professional development of Teacher Educators.

In India, the National Council of Teacher Education released the ‘National Curricular Framework for Teacher Education, 2010 , which aims to remedy many of the ills of teacher training in India. It calls for preparing a ‘humane and reflective practitioner’ and for fostering the agency and autonomy of the teacher, who can interpret the curriculum meaningfully to the contextual needs of the learners, than merely focus on ‘teaching the text book’.

What Is An Rbt

RBTs, or registered behavior technicians, are entry-level health care professionals who work to improve the lives of individuals with developmental disorders, such as autism, that affect behavior and socialization skills. RBTs specialize with a treatment known as applied behavior analysis, or ABA, therapy.

ABA therapists typically develop treatment plans, and the RBT’s role is to help patients complete them. RBTs are entry-level employees. The Behavior Analyst Certification Board only requires 40 hours of training and passage of a 75-question exam.

List Your Behavior Technician Experience

The most important part of any resume is the experience section. Recruiters and hiring managers expect to see your experience listed in reverse chronological order, meaning that you should begin with your most recent experience and then work backwards.

Don’t just list your job duties below each job entry. Instead, make sure most of your bullet points discuss impressive achievements from your past positions. Whenever you can, use numbers to contextualize your accomplishments for the hiring manager reading your resume.

It’s okay if you can’t include exact percentages or dollar figures. There’s a big difference even between saying “Managed a team of engineers” and “Managed a team of 6 engineers over a 9-month project.”

Most importantly, make sure that the experience you include is relevant to the job you’re applying for. Use the job description to ensure that each bullet point on your resume is appropriate and helpful.

Tip : Start With The Job Description

Just as you worry and fret over a resume, an employer carefully crafts a job description. Parse your potential employers language, and you can find hidden gems that will help you land the job.

More than 90% of employers use electronic systems to screen applicants. Computers pick out keywords from the job description, and they look for matches in your resume. Only about 25% of resumes make it out of computer systems like this and into the hands of recruiters. Make sure youre part of this elite group. Pay attention to:

  • Job titles. The Behavior Analyst Certification Board defines the RBT acronym as registered behavior technician. But some employers call their RBTs registered behavioral technicians. Ensure that you call yourself by the name your potential employer prefers.
  • Tasks. Pull key phrases from the job description and put them in your resume. If your potential employer uses words like BACB ethics, skill acquisition programs, discrete trial teaching, and visual communication systems, those words should appear in your resume too.
  • Additional qualifications. Some employers may ask for proof of CPR certification, reliable transportation, or the ability to pass a background check. Find a way to address all of these must-have items in your resume.

Requirements For Rbt Certification

To be certified as an RBT, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a high school diploma
  • Complete the requisite 40 hours of training, overseen by either a BCBA, BCaBA, or BCBA-D
  • Undergo a background check within 180 days of submitting your completed RBT Certification Application
  • Complete and pass the RBT Competency Assessment, in which an assessor observes and evaluates your performance of RBT tasks
  • Complete and pass the RBT exam, which is comprised of 75 multiple-choice questions and assesses the applicants knowledge of the RBT Task List
  • Abide by the RBT Ethics Code

How to succeed in your JOB INTERVIEW: Situational Questions

After gathering your data and choosing an appropriate format, you can start writing your resume. Weâve created an easy-to-follow writing guide to help you finish crafting your resume as quickly as possible.

1. Select an opening statement strategy.

A resume’s opening statement or professional summary should inform the reader of the candidate’s goals and skills. It follows one of two strategies depending on what you wish to highlight: A career objective showcases your career aspirations, and a summary statement displays your experience in the job.

Since the role of behavior technician requires a specific skill set and preferably a few years of professional experience to be hired, we recommend you go ahead with the summary statement approach.

Letâs compare a poor summary statement example with a good one to know what to avoid when writing your resume.

Poor example:

âI am an experienced behavior technician with the knowledge of handling clients suffering from behavioral issues. I have previously worked in treatment centers and have helped many patients get better.â

This summary statement fails to provide any information on the job tasks and doesnât quantify the candidateâs achievements.

Good example:

The example above rectifies the mistakes of the poor example by:

  • Detailing the tasks accomplished on the job concisely.
  • Mentioning previous experiences to show knowledge of different skills.
  • Stating the number of years of work in the field.

Skills

  • Anticipating needs

Tip : List Applicable Experience

Of people who lie on their resumes, 22% do so because they feel they lack experience. Remember that lies have consequences. You might land a job, but you could lose it when your deceit is discovered. Rather than lying, look for ways to make prior jobs applicable.

Consider everything youll do as an RBT:

  • Assess. As an RBT, youll describe a clients behavior in terms you can measure and reassess to look for improvement. If youve worked as a teacher or instructional aide, youve done something similar in the past.
  • Report. Youll generate paperwork about your progress that complies with legal and regulatory requirements. If youve worked as an administrative assistant in the past, you have applicable skills.
  • Communicate. Youll work with students and parents. If youve worked with people at any point in your career, you likely have this skill.
  • Data analysis. Youll look over a students test scores, read reports from parents, and do your own assessments. If youve worked in data entry, education, or computing, youve handled these tasks before.
  • Execute a plan. As an RBT, youll be working with ideas developed by others. You wont diagnose conditions or prescribe treatment plans, but youll ensure orders are followed. You have applicable skills if youve worked in any hierarchical environment, such as the military or law enforcement.

Dig into the jobs youve held and really think about how you can discuss them in a meaningful way.

How To Keep Up With The Latest In Registered Behavior Technician Responsibilities And Professional Ethics

Getting a registered behavior technician job is only the first step. Once you have your RBT certification and get hired, you have to keep up your skills in order to keep it.

RBT certification isnt a one and done process. Becoming certified comes with ongoing obligations and annual renewal requirements.

In order to qualify for that renewal, RBTs are responsible for making sure that at least five percent of their hours each year providing behavior-analytic services have been supervised by a BCBA.

Every RBT, in every setting, also has a responsibility to continue improving their technical skills and knowledge through continuing education. The RBT credential has to be renewed annually, requiring a renewal competency assessment that is conducted by a BCBA. If youre not keeping up with the newest techniques and procedures, youre not likely to pass that assessment!

Your job as an RBT is always going to revolve around those patients and their needs. But youll find that the energy and sacrifice that you put into that work will be fulfilling for you, as well. RBT jobs are never easy, but they are always worthwhile!

What Does An Rbt Do

An RBT guides, assists and documents patients as they follow their therapists’ treatment programs. Since patients are usually autistic, RBTs might develop specific therapeutic skills to help different segments of the autism spectrum.

For instance, in high-functioning patients with stronger verbal skills, RBTs often focus on recognition and response to social cues, gestures and other nonverbal cues. Lower-functioning individuals may work with RBTs to improve their motor or speech skills.

ABA therapy begins by rewarding behavioral improvements. Therapists and RBTs then work to remove incentives so the learned behaviors become more routine for patients. RBTs also prepare for setbacks in the therapy program that might occur if something upsets or stresses a patient.

RBTs typically work one-on-one with patients in homes, treatment clinics, schools or medical settings. They record notes on patients’ progress and discuss results with a supervising therapist or an RBT supervisor.

However, the importance of the quality of this profession for the quality of teaching and learning has been underlined by international bodies including the OECD and the European Commission.

In response to this perceived need, more research projects are now focussing on the teacher educator profession. Several academic journals cover this field.
