Resume Skills For Customer Service

The most important skills for a customer service job can be divided into two categories: hard/technical skills that center around processes, and soft skills that are more personality-based.

You can highlight soft skills like effective communication, active listening, empathy, friendliness, time management, and effective conflict resolution.

However, your focus should be on the hard/technical skills youve gained in your customer service career. Think of the computer programs youve used, your typing or language skills, and technical abilities. Then choose the skills that line up most closely with the position you want. Relevance is important in all parts of the resume, but particularly so in the skills section. Potential employers dont need-or want-to know all the skills youve gained. They want to know the skills that will add value to their organization.

How To Make Your Customer Service Work Experience Stand Out

Recruiters hate nothing more than risk.

You see, their job is on the line if they hire the wrong person.

As such, you need to prove you have what it takes, and your work experience section is the easiest way to do that

Heres the best way for customer service representatives to structure the work experience section:

  • Achieved highest up-sell rates in both 2017 and 2019
  • Worked at the customer information desk for 10+ hour shifts
  • Welcomed 1000+ customers during store opening event
  • Won Employee of the Month three months in a row by engaging with customers in personal, yet professional manner

The key here is to showcase how valuable you were to your previous employer. Doing so will have companies competing against each other for your skills.

Instead of saying

Spoke to all customers

Say:

Won Employee of the Month three months in a row by engaging with customers in personal, yet professional manner

Simply put, the first sentence states that you spoke with customers, but it doesnt say whether you were successful in doing so.

The second statement goes into more detail and backs-up your claims with awards.

Resume Templates For Customer Service: Education And Certifications

How to write a Customer Service resume

Where you put your education on your resume largely depends on the stage youre at in your career and how much education you have obtained. If youre crafting an entry-level resume and you have a bachelors or associates degree, your education should be listed toward the very top of your resume, right below your opening statement. List your highest degree first, and make sure to include which type of degree you earned, your major, the university name, and its location. Most customer service positions require a high school diploma or a GED at a minimum, while some may require a college degree or relevant certification. If you have a high school degree or GED only, be sure to include that at the end of your resume. If you have a college degree, it is unnecessary to list a high school degree on your resume.

List your GPA, if it is strong. If not, omit it. What is strong? For a customer service job, perhaps youd want to list a GPA thats 3.0 or higher.

College Degree Example

Minor: Accounting

GPA 3.4

You can include certifications or languages spoken in this section. This is often a better formatting choice than creating two or three separate sections for these related items. Choose an appropriate title based on what youre including .

Certifications Example

CCSP Certified Customer Service Professional 2015

CCCM Certified Call Center Manager 2017

Customer Service Consultant Resume

Why this resume works

  • As a senior staff member, your customer service consultant resume should be packed with achievements. Don’t undermine your success by formatting your resume incorrectly and not including key information.
  • Include skills, contact information, education, and work experience.
  • List six to ten skills, which is enough to highlight your grasp of customers, their needs, and behaviors without this section becoming a laundry list.
  • Your work experience should contain about three highly relevant job titles, each with three to six action-packed bullet points that demonstrate how you’ve improved customer satisfaction by understanding the customer and helping employees meet the customer’s needs.
  • If you’re moving into a consultant position, we also recommend incorporating a career/resume objective.
  • Tailor your objective to each job to which you apply. If you don’t have time to enter specific job titles, reference skills in the job description and mention the company you’re applying to by name, then you should simply omit the objective.
  • Volunteer Or Community Involvement

If you’re involved in your community, feel free to include that work on your resume. Not only will experiences like these make your resume stand out and be more memorable, the causes you get involved in communicate your values and personal priorities outside of work. Hiring managers want to hire diverse and inclusive teams filled with effective workers who are also kind people, so if you have relevant and current volunteering experience, make sure to include it in a final section on your resume.
