Seven Common Resume Mistakes

Nursing Resume | How to Create a Stunning Resume for Nurses, Doctors & Healthcare Workers

Weve seen a lot of resumes over the years, and you might be surprised by the amount of strange information people have included on resumes. So, here are the top mistakes weve seen:

  • Typos. This should be a no-brainer but, make sure to proofread and even have another set of eyes proofread for you.
  • Birthday or age. Huge red flag for age discrimination.
  • Including salary information. An employer could assume your salary is too high or too low, so just dont list it.
  • Including personal information. Dont include things like photos, religious affiliations, Social Security Numbers, marital status, kids.
  • Using only a nickname. If you go by a different name, include both your legal name and your nickname.
  • For example: Nicole Michelle Nursington
  • Outdated resumes. Make sure your resume includes your most current and relevant positions.
  • Using first-person pronouns. Avoid using pronouns such as I statements. A resume should be in the third person.
  • Contact information in the header. An ATS will not see it there.
  • Unprofessional email addresses. An appropriate email address is: NicoleNursington1@gmail.com but not hufflepuff1990@AOL.com.
  • Inappropriate voicemail greetings and ringback tones. No need to be fancy, a simple ring is fine and a professional greeting is great!
  • Misnaming a resume document. Recruiters go through hundreds of resumes a day, so keeping track of all those files can be difficult. Make it easy for them.

Nurse Cv Summary Example: Professionalism And Empathy

The summary of your nurse resume should highlight your strongest professional qualifications. But nursing is also one of the most people-focused jobs in the world, so be sure to give your resume summary a touch of warmth and emotion.

There are two equally important factors in writing an effective nurse resume summary. The first relates to perception: the resume summary is your first personal introduction to a human reader, not an automated filter. This is where you present yourself as a caring and warm nurse, not one who comes across as cold and detached.

The second factor comes back to the ATS algorithm for scoring your resume based on keywords. Not every hospital will use scoring filters, but it’s better to be on the safe side and not risk having your resume be overlooked on purely technical grounds.

So, how do you know which keywords and professional details are the most important ones? Analyze the nurse job description with care. You’ll often find certain qualities, ideas or technical requirements mentioned more than once, sometimes with different phrasing. This should be your signal that the employer values them more than others.

Strive for language thats energetic and positive, using action verbs that describe your professional outlook and history.

    Include Facility And Unit

Writing the experience section of a nursing resume isnt as straightforward as in other industries.

Hiring managers want to make sure your experience is directly relevant to their hospital, and the best way for them to determine that is by looking through your work experience section.

To make your qualifications as clear as possible, include facility- and unit-specific information in your resume bullet points, such as the total number of beds available at your previous hospital, and the types of units you worked in.

More specifically, you should include the following information on any type of nursing resume:

    • Trauma level: level I, II, III
    • Number of hospital beds
    • Patient demographics
    • Whether you used EMR or EHR

This information gives hiring managers a clear idea of what type of nursing experience you have, and whether youd be a good fit for their hospital.

    Employment History Sample: Diverse Experience

Nurses comprise one of the most diverse professions in terms of background and age. While past nursing positions always take priority in the employment history section of your nurse resume, you can also highlight your varied life and job experience.

There’s plenty of good news to go around for anyone seeking to work as a nurse. For starters, top hospitals are happy to hire certified nurses even if they’re not graduates in their 20s. In fact, nursing applicants 40 years and older who are transitioning from other careersand have rich life experience are becoming more common.

Medical-administrative terms may vary from country to country, and even from state to state in the U.S. So look carefully at the job listing vocabulary, or even visit the employer’s website, to make sure your resume wording is matches.

Also remember there are differences between healthcare facilities in different locations. Include helpful details in your nurse resume about your previous workplaces to clarify. Here are some examples:

    • Facility type: rehabilitation hospital, acute care, long-term care, teaching hospital, etc. If applicable, specify trauma center level .
    • Type of hospital unit and any specifics such as dealing with patient overflows.
    • Bed count and other indications of the scope of your responsibilities.

Newly graduated nurses with little or no work experience should include their clinical rotations. Relevant past employment in other professions also belongs here.

Add Hard Numbers To Your Experience Section

    Nurse Practitioner Resume Samples

One of the most effective ways to show employers your capabilities and successes as a nurse is to add hard numbers to your work experience section.

For example, when writing your resume, ask yourself the following questions:

    • How many patients did you take care of in your unit?
    • How many hours did you work per rotation?
    • How many nurses did you work with, or train?

Numbers give the hiring manager a clear picture of your skills and abilities because they add context to the accomplishments on your resume.

Heres an example of a bullet point without numbers:

    No hard numbers

    • Supervised unit of a large psychiatric facility

Here is the same statement with numbers and context added:

    With hard numbers

    • Supervised up to 10 staff in the 200-bed adolescent unit of a large psychiatric facility, specializing in eating disorders

How To Make a Resume For Nurses | Nursing Job Application

The resume-reading robot is actually a program known as Applicant Tracking Software .

It is highly technical and individualized, but not nearly as smart as a human. It does what it has been programmed to do.

An employer may enter in specific keywords for the ATS to scan for. They may choose to enter knockout questions to quickly eliminate unqualified candidates. Such as, Do you have an active Washington State Nursing License?

They could even choose to include disqualifying statements to automatically screen candidates out. For example, if an ATS is programmed to screen out all resumes lacking a Bachelors Degree, anyone with an Associates Degree will automatically be rejected. If you have both, consider listing only your BSN.

Recruiters may also configure the ATS to deliver only resumes that include exact keywords.
