Whether you mention a short-term job in your paperwork or not, chances are good that any gaps in your job history will come up during the interview. Even if the interviewer doesnt ask directly about the gaps in your work history, you should bring them up in a proactive, positive light.

For example, if you leave a short-term job off your resume , you might bring it up when the interviewer asks what youre doing now: For the past month, I worked at Company X, doing Y. The job gave me a great chance to brush up on my communications skills by. Similarly, you can discuss this job in response to another question that asks about communication skills, your weaknesses, or other areas in which youve recently learned or practiced a particular skill.

What About A Functional Resume

Many hiring professionals say they prefer chronological resumes to functional resumes. They are often suspicious of functional resumes, which are usually used to hide something. Select a functional format only if you have an extremely poor work background with extended gaps or a terrible history of job-hopping.

Some job seekers try to hide their spotty work histories by submitting a resume cover letter in lieu of a resume. This type of letter covers the key points of a resume in narrative format, but skips over any sketchy parts of the work history. This approach is normally not recommended, because ultimately employers will be looking for the resume.

Make sure your story makes sense to the hiring manager and answers any potential landmine questions.

At the end of the day, it’s up to you how much or how little information to include on your resume. A good rule of thumb is to try to keep the resume as short as you can without leaving out anything pertinent, but this is generally easier said than done. A one-page resume is the goal if you dont have a lot of experience, but many job seekers have two-page resumes. Just dont go any longer than that.

How To List Temp Jobs On A Resume: Example 2

If, like Gayle, your employment history is dominated by temp and contract work, then your best bet is to group your temp jobs together. This works especially well if all your temporary positions were arranged through the same agency, if you held similar titles, or if you performed similar duties during each assignment.

When grouping multiple temp jobs on your resume, list the agency as your employer, write a blurb that explains the types of assignments you accepted during that time, and then include a list of bullets that call attention to tasks you performed that are most noteworthy or are best at demonstrating your qualifications. Depending on your situation, you may or may not choose to list each temporary contract agreement and your employment dates with that company in the bullets.

    Yesterday my colleague Peter wrote that you should omit short term jobs or jobs where you were fired from your resume. He called it lying, but I think its a grey area. Well with all due respect to the opinion of our editor-in-chief, I think theres other, less murky, ways to go about explaining short term stints.

    Gaps in a resume are one thing but how, in an interview, do you explain leaving a job after a few months, or worse, getting fired in short order?

    Its a very rare occasion that someone starts a job only to be let go a few hours after the fact, but it happens. It recently happened to a new employee at an independent record label. On his first day he wrote what the company deemed was an inappropriate response to a customer complaint. Regardless of all the circumstances, whos right or whos wrong, the now ex-employee has a resume decision. Do you include being hired for a cool job on your resume when it ended in you being fired on day one? In this particular case, its a relatively easy decision. Id agree with Peter and say dont include the experience. But, what if youve put in more time than just the one day?

    There are a number of ways to explain a short stint when interviewing. The key is to relieve concerns that this is common practice, that you are in fact reliable and to place a positive spin on why you left.

    And always, regardless of the past situation, speak highly of former bosses and colleagues.

    Some employers see a short-term job as a big question mark on your resume. Are you a job hopper? Are you a problem employee? You need to be ready to answer those questions. If you arent, it might be better to leave it off your resume.

    But how do you figure out whether you should put that short-term job on your resume? Ask yourself the following questions.

  • If you have years of experience on your resume, leaving a short-term job off your resume isnt going to hurt your chances. Unless you learned something valuable, like a marketable skill or job-relevant certification, dont feel the need to put the job on your resume.
