Why Do Employers Dislike Stapled Resumes
Stapled resumes are a problem because they can jam and damage paper shredders. Most companies have information privacy rules in place, which forces them to shred or destroy any documents containing personal data.
This data includes the name, address, and phone number written on your resume.
When it comes time to dispose of old resumes it then becomes someones job to remove every staple from every resume by hand.
At best, this is tedious. At worst, they may injure their hands on the sharp metal edges. Do not be the person that ruins an employers day thanks to a staple accident!
Types Of Cover Letters
An application letter is written when applying to a job or internship. Along with a resume, it typically accompanies a job application form. The main difference between application cover letters and prospecting cover letters is that an application letter is written for a specific job or internship position.
A prospecting letter is used to inquire about possible opportunities when none are advertised. It is also sent with a resume, but does not address a specific job opening. When writing a prospecting letter, you should state specific knowledge of and interest in the company or program you are inquiring about, then describe the skills and knowledge you offer that could add value to the company.

Why Do You Need Two Page Resume
A two page resume is sometimes a matter of choice and sometimes a matter of dignity.
Before the days of email, resumes were faxed, and further back, hand delivered. Pages got separated, particularly off a fax, but also on desktops .
That is the place from where all the “your resume should be one page long” advice ultimately comes from.
In fact, nowadays many people are not required to print the resume unless the recruit needs to take notes on it.
Pages don’t get separated in the digital domain, so 2 pages is OK – provided you aren’t just making it longer to appear more impressive. And if you’re an established professional, even a 3 page resume can be acceptable under certain circumstances .
In fact a resume should NOT be more than two pages. A CV could be more than two pages, but you’re not writing a CV, are you?
Unless your’e targetting jobs around the European continent, you do not need a CV. In fact, a 2 page resume contains almost all the information as does a CV.
List Important Accomplishments Instead Of Tasks
Instead of creating a list of all the job duties youve had at each of your professional experiences, list only your greatest, most relevant accomplishments. Be sure to review the job description so you can include achievements the employer will find interesting. Quantify your success with numbers when possible such as the number of people you lead, an amount or percentage of time you saved or an amount or percentage of money you made or saved.

How Should I Bind My Resume
The binding of a document refers to the method by which the pages are held together. Books, for example, are usually bound by thread and pamphlets might be bound by staples. For your resume, consider binding techniques that are simple and professionally presentable. The last thing you want to do is have your resume overlooked because it is too decorative.
Make sure that each page of your resume has a page number on it as well as your last name. Although you’ll be binding the pages together, there’s a chance that the hiring manager or HR department will detach the pages for review. You want to make sure that the pages of your resume are taken as a whole.
Place your resume and cover letter inside a protective plastic document sleeve. Not only will the sleeve serve the purpose of keeping the pages neat, it will also allow the hiring manager to pull out your resume, review it, and then file it away if necessary.
Bind your resume using a single paper clip if you do not have access to plastic protective document sleeves. Paper clips are better than staples because they can be easily removed. Since some human resources departments prefer to scan resumes into a computer database, you’ll make the job easier by using a disposable paper clip.
As a rule of thumb, keep your resume reduced to a single page. Only in instances where you have acquired several years of experience in the same industry should you need to use more than one page.
Cover Letter Quick Tips
Target your message. Describe how your skills, expertise, and accomplishments can benefit the employer. Highlight one or two of your accomplishments or abilities that show you are an above-average candidate for the position. Stressing one or two attributes will increase your chances of being remembered by the recruiter and securing an interview.
Be purposeful. Every cover letter is different, but many effective cover letters provide evidence of the following: company knowledge, technical knowledge, enthusiasm, communication skills, leadership, teamwork, comfort with deadlines, responsibility, ability to learn quickly, maturity and self-starting.
Show your interest. Gain an extra edge by showing that you have specific knowledge about the company or industry. This shows that you are genuinely interested in the job and not just blindly sending out hundreds of resumes. More importantly, the employer will view your interest as an indication that you are likely to stay within the company for a substantial period of time if you are hired.
DO NOT MASS PRODUCE. It is especially important to relate your skills and experience to a specific position in a specific organization. Spotlight your accomplishments and measurable results. Consider that each potential employer is looking for different skills and qualities in each candidate.

Should I Staple My Resume For A Job Fair
Resumes should never be stapled when handed out at a job fair or to any employer in general. Stapled resumes are despised by most employers because they are difficult to take apart. Use paper clips if necessary or keep your resume to one-page when presenting it at a job fair.
Never under any circumstance should you hand an employer a stapled resume.
Consider this one of the golden rules of job hunting, because there are no exceptions.
Especially at a job fair when an employer may get hundreds of resumes, yours should never be stapled.
Editing Revision And Review
Now that youve written down every credential you can think of, its time to take a break. Stand up, stretch, and breathe. The worst of the process is over! Before you begin the revision process, turn your attention elsewhere. Maybe take a quick walk, have a snack, or take a nap. Put thoughts of a resume out of your head for an hour or so.
Youre back and refreshed? Great! Take a moment to re-read what youve written. Check for these common errors:
- Spelling & Grammar
- Run your word processing programs spelling and grammar check.
- Run a manual spelling check .
- Expand contractions .
- Be consistent with punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.
- Read your resume out loud to yourself. A good resume will flow off your tongue and sound professional. Reading aloud will also help you identify grammatical errors.

Make Your Ideas More Concise
The first step you should take when editing your resume is to make your ideas brief. You can do this by focusing on the key idea of each sentence to shorten sentences in your summary or objective, professional experience or other sections. For example, on a data entry clerk resume, instead of saying:
Demonstrated proficiency reviewing and entering test requisition form data , identifying inadvertently omitted test codes and notifying appropriate department for resolution
you could simply say:
Accurately reviewed and entered data daily from 400+ test requisition forms while identifying and reporting inaccuracies.
Should Your Resume Have A Cover Letter At A Job Fair
You do not need to include a cover letter with your resume at a job fair. In fact, this would be a particularly odd thing to do, considering most people are giving out the same resumes to multiple employers.
Do not try to use a cover letter, even if you think it is one size fits all.
Cover letters are supposed to be designed to target the specific company, and to explain why you are a perfect fit for them and the open position.
This is a difficult question to answer at a job fair when most of the employers receive more generalized resumes.
Unlike the usual way of tailoring each resume to each employer, job fairs attract applicants who turn in generalized resumes containing an overview of their talents.
Specialized parts of a resume such as cover letters should not be brought to a job fair.

Never Staple Your Resume And Other Sins Of The Job Hunt
I recently attended a job fair. Not because I was looking for work I am, as of 4:19 p.m. on March 20, 2007, still, to my knowledge, employed. I went on assignment to talk to a particular set of jobseekers. I cant tell you who just yetnot until my story meets its usual fate, bludgeoned to a mangy pulp and left for dead in the morgue we keep here at TIME for stories that never see the light of print.
But I thought to mention the job fair because one jobseeker I interviewed proudly handed me her résumé, the first shed written perhaps ever.
As you might guess, there was a lot I could fault in that résumé. The thing that jumped out at me, though, was the staple.
Thats right. This eager, talented and experienced jobseeker had committed the cardinal sin of the job hunt: shed submitted a two-page résumé.
If I could figure out how to do audio on this blog, this is where Id enter a horror-movie shriek. Ill substitute text: AIIEEEEEE!

Anyway, imagine my surprise when I opened my e-mail this morning to read this release from staffing company Accountemps: Survey Shows Longer Resumes Becoming More Acceptable.
While more than half of executives polled believe a single page is the ideal length for a staff-level resume, 44% said they prefer two pages.
What? They prefer two pages?!
Okay, so it wasnt that deep a thought. Whatever.
All that said, Accountemps does include a rather helpful list of dos and donts in resume writing:
