Unlike the functional resume, it leaves the bottom half of the resume for a more traditional approach to the work history, where each position is accompanied by a blurb that outlines responsibilities and accomplishments.

The skills style is well suited to students who have gained valuable experience through a number of unrelated jobs and courses. This format is also appropriate for people who are making a significant change in careers. It emphasizes what you can do, not where you have worked. Applicable skills can be established through any activities that you feel will demonstrate your qualifications: courses, work, volunteer activities, personal life, and so forth.

For example, if you talked to customers as you waited on them at McDonald’s, investigated shipper’s presentations in a psychology course, you have demonstrated communications skills. However, try to match your skills to the position you are applying for. If you are applying for a Customer Service Representative position, you might list the McDonald’s and the moving company activities under a heading called Customer Service Skills.

How To Write A Skills

To write a skills-based resume, follow these steps:

  • Start with a header. Just like any resume, your skills-based resume needs a header. This should include your name in slightly larger print, as well as your email address, address , and phone number.

  • Open with your qualifications summary. This is where you want to put your top credentials and/or accomplishments. The hiring manager is probably a bit wary of your light experience section, so your qualifications summary has to put them at ease about your background.

Three to five bullet points is enough for your qualifications summary you want to leave something to talk about in the following sections, after all.

  • Include a relevant skills section. While a chronological resume would typically end with a short list of skills with little or no description, a skills-based resume makes them the star of the show.

Provide three to five skills in larger or bolded text. Beneath each skill, give three or four bullet points describing your background with that skill. Each skill you choose should align directly with a major skill listed in the job description.

  • Include an education section. If you went to college, its certainly worth including your degree and the name of the school at the bottom of your resume. Your GPA and relevant coursework might also come in handy if youre fresh out of school.

High school education is also worth listing if you dont have any college experience and are new to the job market.

What Not To Include In A Resume

    Management Skills Examples for Resume

Use your common sense when writing your resume. If you have been employed for many years and your career has evolved over time, knowing how to write a resume well means you will not include every role youve ever held, such as the casual retail position you had in high school or the captaincy of your social sporting team. Rather, use the limited space on your resume strategically by ensuring every line shows how you are relevant to the particular job youre applying for.

Similarly, if you have an advanced degree, few people are going to be concerned about the exams you took when you were 16 years old. Instead, only include training that is relevant to the position you are applying for.

Unless otherwise stated, you dont need to attach copies of certificates, qualifications or references. You should instead bring these to a job interview.

We also advise candidates to avoid listing their hobbies or interests. Focus instead on the experience and skills that make you suitable for the job youre applying for. The exceptions occur when you have limited relevant experience or if the employer specifically asks applicants to list hobbies. In these cases, keep it brief. Avoid anything that could be contentious, such as political affiliations, and instead show how your personality is suited to that of the organisation. For example, consider listing a hobby that requires expertise relevant to the role, such as organisational or communication skills.
