Focus On Your Education And Skills

In lieu of a work experience section, it’s best to expand and focus on an education section to highlight the skills you’ve developed on your resume. What can you do well that this job requires? What will be useful to the hiring company? What have you done in school and what have you studied that has prepared you for assuming this job? This is generally a little easier if you’re a college graduate with specialized education, but even a high school graduate can talk about their electives and relevant coursework, why they wanted to take them, and what they learned from the class.

Guidelines To Write Impressive High School Resume

Firstly, Resumes is not a required part of your college application process. In fact some universities even ban students from submitting their resumes.Â;

However, I strongly recommend high school students to write a resume based on your common app because it might be wise to send it to some schools that you are applying too. The resume can be sent to some universities, used to apply for scholarships, and even internships when you are at college.

Take Time To Edit And Proofread

Carefully edit and proofread your resume before you submit it. A resume that’s grammatically correct will make you look more professional and appealing than a resume filled with typos. While both Microsoft Word and Google Docs do a decent job of detecting technical errors, other tools, such as Grammarly, are better at catching minute grammar mistakes.

After you’ve cleaned up your resume, slowly read it over to look for any awkward phrases, inconsistencies, ambiguous descriptions, or poor word choice and tweak as needed.

As a college freshman, its important that you communicate your most notable qualities as quickly as possible. Thats why formatting your resume properly is essential.

You should start by using a chronological resume format, with your education placed towards the top of your resume, followed by your experience section. Your experience should list your most recently held position at the top, with your least recent position at the bottom.

Heres an example of what that looks like in action:

This format is ideal for freshmen because it puts your most marketable quality right at the top of your resume, and then provides an easy-to-read overview of your relevant experience.

Are There Other Uses For College Resume

YES! Bring a copy to your next job interview and impress the interviewer. Bring multiple copies to scholarship or admission interviews in case they do not have a copy in front of them. It is an easy conversation starter. You may want to apply to a Greek Organization freshman year at college or run for an office of a club. The resume will be extremely useful in highlighting your past achievements. And finally, some teachers/counselors will ask for a copy when writing your letters of recommendation for college senior year.

Will A Resume Add Anything To My Application Profile

A résumé expert reveals what a perfect résumé looks like

This is the essential question that applicants need to ask themselves when debating whether or not to submit this extra info to a resume-optional institution. There are, after all, plenty of admissions officers who get annoyed at the inclusion of extraneous submissions from an applicant. When you are responsible for sifting through the 108,837 applications at UCLA and a student has included a dozen writing samples and a seven-minute video about their passion for LARPing, annoyance may only be the tip of the emotional iceberg. To a lesser extent, the inclusion of a student resume that restates everything verbatim already laid out in the activities section of the Common App will also cause consternation for super-busy admissions professionals.

A fair way to weigh whether an optional resume adds any value to your overall submission is to make a list of the impressive things about yourself not included anywhere else in your application. If that list ends up containing nothing of actual committee-swaying quality, consider shutting down the whole operation. If there are indeed brag-worthy achievements on your list that, for one reason or another, cannot be included in the regular application and are resume-appropriate, fire away.

Decide On A Resume Format

There are a few dominant resume templates in use today: chronological, functional, and hybrid, which is a combination of the two. A chronological resume format lists a candidate’s work experience in reverse-chronological order. A functional resume format focuses on highlighting the candidate’s skills and achievements, rather than work experience. While the functional resume format can be an attractive option for job seekers with little experience, most employers prefer a chronological or hybrid resume format. Whatever resume format you decide to use, be sure that your format remains consistent throughout the job resume.

How To Write A Resume Header

If you’re still using an old email address from high school, it’s time to create a new professional account. Choose a popular email provider like Gmail or Outlook and keep your address simple by using your full name or a variation of your first and last name.

Your contact information must be up to date so that potential employers won’t have any issue reaching you. Make sure to include your first and last name, phone number, and email address in the header of your resume, and double-check that these are correct.

If location is important or relevant to the company, you may also include your city and state in your header. You can usually skip putting down your full home address.

If you don’t have a lot of work experience but do have a portfolio of relevant work you can show, you should insert links to your personal website and/or online portfolio in your resume header.

You might also consider including a link to to help the hiring manager get a better sense of your professional presence. Steer clear of adding links to any other social media accounts unless the job specifically requires social media skills.

How To Write A Resume For Your College Application

Okay, if youve made it to this point then you must be one of those uncommon applicants for whom a resume is either a) required/recommended; or b) will add something significant to your application. Here are some tips for writing a meaningful college applicant resume:

  • Most basic resume formats include ones Education, Experience, and Honors. These three headings will serve you well in this venture, and take notethey align pretty closely with the Common App format.
  • Follow the same general advice that we provided in our piece on How to Complete the College Application Activities List. Pay attention to chronology, accuracy, clarity of descriptions, and remain dedicated to only including items that genuinely add something to your candidacy.
  • The Common App activities and honors sections have notoriously strict character limits that can make some activities and distinctions frustratingly difficult to fully convey. If you have captured a number of impressive national, state, or local awards and were unable to fit them on your Common App honors section, then a resume presents a wonderful opportunity to tell the committee about these achievements in glorious detail.
  • What Additional Sections To Include On A High School Resume

    After youve completed the above sections, you might find you still have some space on your high school resumeand thats good! It gives you an opportunity to further impress potential employers and colleges. Lets explore the different types of sections you can add to round out your resume.

    Honors and Awards. Many students will include this section in their high school resume because its the perfect way to showcase their academic, sport, and extracurricular achievements. You might include being on the Honor Roll, having perfect attendance, winning a sports championship, placing first in a robotics competition, or receiving a scholarship, to name a few examples.;

    Relevant certifications. If youve had the opportunity to complete training and earn certifications relating to the position youre applying tofor instance, a CPR certification for a lifeguard or preschool assistant jobyou might want to devote an additional section to those.;

    Portfolio or published works. If youre an artist, writer, or other type of creative, you can add a section to your high school resume that specifically highlights your best creative achievements. For example, you can share the artwork youve publicly displayed, the poems youve had published, or the musical pieces youve performed.;

    Remember, your high school resume is all about you. So tailor the focus of your additional sections to showcase your uniqueness and bring you closer to the job, internship, scholarship, or college youre pursuing.

    Beginning Of A Resume: Resume Summary Or Resume Objective

    The first inevitable question is: How do I begin? What do I write after personal information section ?

    Resume summary or resume objective. Both are equally good and/or useful, the important question is: which one works better for you?

    • Resume summary is a short summary of your background, most important strengths and simply, a way to explain what you can offer to the employer. A good summary should not be more than 5 sentences and it can also be presented in a form of bullet points as well, e.g.: An experienced English translator with over 10 years of experience. Motivated, inter-cultural and flexible. Excited for new challenges and opportunities, especially interested in alternative learning methods.
    • A resume objective is a way to convince an employer/s you know what you want in your career. It should be a clear, structured message, e.g.: An experienced English translator with over 10 years of experience, actively searching for opportunities in international corporations.

    If written well, both resume and objective, can and should spark recruiters attention and lure him/her to take a closer look at your application.

    If you have a really clear career perspective or you know exactly what you want, a career objective may be better suited for you.

    Also, it may be better suited for beginners because it states what you want or are aiming at and is not stressing out your prior achievements/experience.

    Extracurricular Activities And Hobbies

    Other companies may appreciate seeing a hobby on your résumé if its somehow related to the job youre pursuing. And if theres a chance your hobby makes you stand out as a more attractive candidate, youd be wise to include it, Alyssa Gelbard, the founder and president of the career consulting and personal-branding firm;Résumé Strategists, tells Business Insider.

    When a potential employer sees a candidates hobbies, it provides insight into personality traits, industry knowledge, and can make you more attractive for a role, she says.

    But remember: Anything you include on your résumé is fair game during an interview , so make sure you can really talk about your passion for the hobby and why you included it on résumé, Gelbard says.

    Hobbies like rock climbing and camping show a willingness to leave your comfort zone, also desirable traits employers look for.

  • Skills

    Cv Skills Example Section: The Tools For The Job

    The skills section of a college student CV should be defined by the job you’re looking to attain. Even at this early stage of life, people often have more relevant skills and professional qualities than they give themselves credit for. The trick is to choose and describe them correctly on your CV.

    Step 1: Create a master list;

    The master list is a free-form document electronic or or even a piece of paper where you write down every skill and quality you can think of. Keep your master list handy for reference whenever a new job opportunity arises. Grab it for easy cherry-picking to tailor each new version of your specific resumeto the job application.;

    Step 2: Use industry knowledge

    This depends heavily on what job you’re seeking and for what purpose. As a college student there are typically two possibilities. One is a temp job to pay the bills and acquire experience. The other is more farsighted an internship or entry-level position in a job related to your degree or education focus.

    Make sure to understand the difference between hard skills and soft skills and how to assess their relative importance to specific jobs and employers. Hard skills are pragmatic tools used in daily duties while soft skills relate to social interactions, self-management, teamwork and so on.

    Step 3: Analyze the job description;

    Open With A Strong Summary Statement

    Take the guess work out of the recruiters hands and let them know what position you are interested in based on your skill sets, goals and passion, by creating a strong opening summary statement, says Eison. This isnt a long-winded paragraph. This is short and to the point, like this:

    Seeking financial analyst role where 2+ years of experience at a Fortune 100 organization will add value.

    Bold;the key terms, results, and language in that summary, and throughout the resume.

    Your resume will be skimmed at first, so make sure to bold your titles and other areas where you want to capture the hiring managers attention, says McGuiness. If they are intrigued, theyll read more.

    Said Eison: If you dont have a clear summary, recruiters may wrongly assume the role you are applying to or they may not be able to decide where your skills would be an asset for the organization and your resume may be placed in the no pile.
