Use A Header To Present Your Contact Details

Real Resume Review | College Student

Begin your resume with an eye-catching resume header to ensure the hiring manager notices your application and can quickly find your contact details. For example:

Just having your name in bold at the top was acceptable in the early 2000s, but resumes should look more stylish nowadays to increase their chances of success.

To make sure your resumes information is presented well, use a resume template that features a good-looking header and a modern layout.

Your resume header should include your phone number and a professional email address. However, theres no need to include your mailing address on your resume. Hiring managers today contact candidates exclusively by phone and email.

Only add a local mailing address if your previous jobs were in other cities, and you want to reassure the hiring manager that youve moved permanently to your new location. In that case, pair your resume with a relocation cover letter.

How long should my resume be?

This is, without a doubt, the most common question I am asked. My answer? It depends! Honestly, there are general guidelines, but, like anything, there are also exceptions.

In general, new grads or graduates with two jobs or less should aim for a one-page resume. In cases where you have had lots of projects with quantified achievements in these two roles, have meaningful volunteer work or any number of alternative situations that warrant a second page, go for it. Executives or professionals with extensive careers may need to extend to a third page, but this should be reserved only for situations where meaningful achievements or relevant early-career roles simply do not fit into two pages.

For most professionals, two pages is more than enough. The next most often asked question is how far to go back when listing experience. I do not buy into the commonly held view that you should only include 10 years on your resume. While this is the most relevant experience and should be the focus, most of us have had experiences in the past 15 years that are part of the narrative that shapes our unique value. For instance, a chief operating officer who began his or her career in public accounting has a different value proposition than one who began as a labor and employment attorney. This is relevant and needs to be included as part of your narrative.

Promoting your brand is really important and a well-written;career summary;is now more important than having an objective section. This is a high-level overview of your candidacy and should highlight achievements and attributes that make you most valuable to an employer. This is to demonstrate what YOU can do for an employer rather than focusing on what they can do for you.

Below the career summary should be a;key skills section. This ties in with the career summary and reaffirms the value and expertise that you can bring to the role. We suggest you slightly tailor this section to suit each job posting you apply for, as applicant tracking systems scan resumes looking for keywords to move the candidate forward. Hence words and phrases from the job posting need to be closely reflected in your resume.

The employment history;section should also match the language of the rest of your resume and have a storytelling component. If you can, weave a story into a few lines explaining why you changed industries or why you were promoted. This section should only list your most relevant;work history, so dont include experience that dates back further than 10 years unless it is really going to add value to a future employer.

What About Other Sections Like Publications Social Media Awards

Publications are relevant for people working in academia. But in a regular resume its not a section youd ever need . If you have a portfolio, for example if youre an IT professional, you can mention the link in the contact section.;

As for a Social media section, Id normally include LinkedIn only. If youre on social media or in a creative field and have your portfolio, Id be probably more inclined to use that in the contact details section recruiters can check it immediately without having to flip through the sections. In general, if social media is personal, dont put it on your resume.

Awards the same thing as for Achievements. If you have extensive experience or youve done something really impressive, highlight that immediately. But if youve been an employee of the month twice, thats something Id include in the job description.;

Nodejs Developer Sample Resume: Senior Level

What Your Resume Should Look Like in 2019

Theres a lot that separates a Node.js fresher resume or a Node.js backend developer resume from a senior engineer. Senior-level Node developers should be at the top of their game, and their resume should reflect that. Not only does a senior-level engineer need the skills found on a Node.js backend resume, they also need a broader range of programming experience, but they need experience in project or staff leadership as well.

Top-level talent should be able to lead development strategy, analyzing all the incoming user data and existing back in front and structures to create forward-thinking applications for their clients. Client recommendations and reviews can be important Node.js resume points at this stage, and with a portfolio of work to show, you should be able to visit websites and mobile apps to test drive their work.

Best Resume Fonts To Use

Choosing the right resume font can seem like an impossible task, especially as there are hundreds of choices available. Making sure your resume is readable is step number one.

You want to make sure that a potential employer can easily read it regardless of if its printed out or on a computer screen. Speaking of computer screens, not everyone is on the same operating system which means a unique or quirky font on your screen might show up as code or nonsense on someone elses.

And nobodys hiring nonsense.

Your resume is a professional representation of who you are, and as such, should look professional.

Many companies these days use an automated applicant tracking software to first pre-qualify candidates and the last thing you want to do is get sorted to the bottom of the pile, or worse, rejected, because the computer program didnt recognize your font or had difficulty reading it.

Sans Serifs fonts are fonts which are clean, crisp, sleek, and most importantly, scanner-friendly! Theyre also eyeball-friendly which means a hiring manager reading it wont have any issues trying to figure out what theyre looking at or run into eye-strain.

Stick to fonts like Arial, Verdana, Trebuchet MS, Century Gothic, Gill Sans MT , Lucida Sans and Tahoma.

Of course, over here at The Interview Guys, well confess that were partial to Helvetica. Its a flawless blend of style and clarity.

Try to stay between 10.5 and 12 points. Any smaller and its hard to read.
