How To Make A Resume
Before you even start working on your resume, you need to decide how youre going to build it.
And no – you shouldnt use a basic text editor. While this IS the most popular method for creating a resume, its very far from the best.
With a basic text editor resume, youll need to spend hours playing with the formatting. You make a minor change and BAM! Your entire resume layout gets messed up.
Instead of using a text editor, we recommend choosing a resume builder, such as Novorésumé. Our resume builder is fast, easy, and to put the icing on the cake, a Novorésumé looks much better and can fit more information than your average, cookie-cutter resume…

Prioritize Job Description Information
Next, think about prioritizing the information you provide in each description. Present details that are of the greatest interest to potential employers first. For example, consider the candidate seeking a job in interior design.
The resume might reflect a retail experience in which 75% of the candidate’s time was spent on the sales floor, and 25% was spent designing window and floor displays. Priority, determined by relevance to the employer, dictates that design of window and floor displays should be listed before sales.
What You Learned And Accomplished In Class
Similarly, you might remind your teacher about a memorable project you worked on or lesson that was especially meaningful from class. If you had any notable achievements or important moments, you could describe them to your teacher.
Since the best rec letters use specific examples, your input could be a useful reminder. Maybe you worked on a special research project or excelled in a debate. Perhaps reading A Brave New World changed your perspective on life. Maybe your teachers class helped you discover you want to be a World History major.
Whatever you took away from her class, it could be useful to share. Your input could help make her letter even more specific. If nothing else, your teacher will appreciate hearing that her class made an impact on your thinking.
What You Need to Do
Before requesting your recommendation, list out your reasons for asking this teacher. Think about any stand out projects or instances where you went beyond requirements. Consider times that you contributed to a discussion, or perhaps had a thought-provoking conversation you had with your teacher.
Write these moments down, and share them with your teacher when you make your request. As with above, you don’t want to come off like you’re writing the letter for your teacher.
You could say something short and to the point, like, I learned a ton from your class and was hoping you could provide me with a recommendation for college. One of my favorite projects was

Whats A Resume Summary & When To Use It
A resume summary is a 2-3 sentence summary of your career. You should use a resume summary in basically any situation, unless youre a recent university graduate or switching careers .
In your resume summary, you need to mention:
What Is A Resume
A resume is a summary of your career, whether yours is just getting started or has been going on for years. Coming in at around one page in length , it showcases the jobs youve held and currently hold, the responsibilities youve taken on, the skills youve developed, and the qualities you bring to the table as an employee. Together, those things make it super easy for any hiring manager to see your qualifications and fit for a role.
For all the work you may put into writing one, hiring managers actually spend very little timemere seconds in many caseslooking at your resume. But despite this sad fact, its safe to say that creating a great resume still matters.
If you miss the mark, your resume may never be read. Even worse, you might be removed from the applicant pool by a computer before a human even knows you exist, says Muse career coach Heather Yurovsky, founder of Shatter & Shine. So you want to get it right because, as she explains, isnt the goal to spend less time looking for a job and more time in a role you love?
And although LinkedIn has plenty of benefits, a resume has one clear advantage: While your LinkedIn is usually a broader picture of your career trajectory, your resume gives you the opportunity to tailor your career story to a specific role or company .

Take It One Step Further
People hire performers, so you want to show that you didnt just do stuff, but that you got stuff done! As you look at your bullet points, think about how you can take each statement one step further and add in what the benefit was to your boss or your company. By doing this, you clearly communicate not only what youre capable of, but also the direct benefit the employer will receive by hiring you. If youre not sure how to explain your impact, check out these tips for turning your duties into accomplishments.
More Soft Skills Than Hard Skills
As mentioned earlier, employers have a preference for seeing hard skills on a resume. The right place to highlight soft skills is your cover letter or in an interview, where you can better demonstrate communication skills, interpersonal skills, active listening, and more.
So as you review your resume, its a problem if you find many soft skills but few hard skills and job-related skills.
In fact, you should be looking to highlight these job-related skills in practically every resume section, starting with your resume summary paragraph.

Consider Including Volunteer Work Or Other Experience
Anything youve done thats not work experienceyour side gig, volunteer work, special projectscan be hosted under clearly-labeled sections . Depending on how robust your work experience is, these things may be worth including, particularly if theyve helped you level up your skill set or better align you with your dream job. Plus, they make you look that much more well-rounded, passionate, and hardworking.
If youre a recent grad, you might also build out a section for on-campus activities, such as clubs, organizations, or leadership experience. This can be a great supplement if youre lacking in the jobs department. You can frame these just as you would professional jobsincluding your title, the organizations name, and bullets describing what your role was and what you accomplished.
The Information To Remove From A Us Resume
There are several types of information and details that you should remove from your resume in order to be a competitive applicant in the US workforce today.
Personal details like your date of birth, parent or spouse names, marital status, or identification numbers. US employers donât want to see this and may reject your resume automatically to avoid discrimination concerns.
A headshot. This raises another discrimination issue, as well as takes up valuable room on your resume that should be used to describe your qualifications.
Your full address. Stick to the city or greater location you live in, plus the state and zip code. Any street names or numbers are considered too much information.
Only include a phone number if it is a 10-digit US number. Include an area code, but not a country prefix. Example: 944-9929
References, unless the job posting specifically instructs you to include them on your resume. Including them without prompting is considered presumptuous, as most employers will ask for references later in the hiring process.

Important Facts About The Federal Hiring Process
- The Federal Government does have a standard job application. Your resume is your application.
- Hiring agencies use the job announcement to describe the job and list the required qualifications and responsibilities.
- After applying, the hiring agency uses the information in your resume to verify if you have the required qualifications stated in the job announcement.
- Once the hiring agency has determined who is qualified, they may use other assessments such as interviews or testing to determine the best qualified applications.
A Resume Summary Statement
Your resume summary is another great way to quickly let recruiters know who you are. If a recruiter only has time to read one thing, assume it will be your headline and summary statement, and impress them accordingly.
You can think of your resume summary statement as an elevator pitch. Include a summary of your work history, skills and most remarkable accomplishments.
Note: A resume summary statement may not be the best choice for your resume if you dont have a lot of work history or relevant experience.

Things You Should Always Include In A Cv
Nine essential CV details and some that should be removed.
So, you’re looking for a job and want to know how to write a CV? Take a look at the top nine things you should always include in your CV plus what details you should remove to ensure your job applications impress every employer.
How To List References
Before you begin your job hunt, gather your references onto a Professional Reference Page. Include each references name, title, organization, phone number, and email address.
List your references starting with your most impressive or important reference.
Dont annotate your application with resume references available upon request. This outdated practice only uses up valuable space and restates something that every hiring manager already knows.
Instead, create a dedicated references page separate from your resume, and attach it to your application.
Next, list each reference like this:
Proper professional references format
Company / University your reference works atFull address of your references company / universityPhone numberEmail address
Never include the personal address of your reference on your reference page, because hiring managers dont contact references via snail mail. Plus your reference may not want you to share their personal information with strangers either.
Underneath each entry on your resumes reference page, you should also make a note clarifying your relationship with the reference, and how long youve known or worked with them.
Finally, if you want to save time formatting your reference page, download our resume references template and fill it in yourself:

Spelling Or Grammar Mistakes

You are very unlikely to get called for an interview if you have a spelling or grammar mistake on your resume and nobodys going to tell you either.
So you need to find it yourself, or have a friend proofread it carefully for you!
Heres a little trick if you proofread it yourself: temporarily change your resume to an unusual font before proofreading. It will help you spot errors .
Now youve hopefully gotten answers to your questions about what should a resume include, and youve seen the top things to leave off as well.

Why Do Colleges Require Recommendation Letters
Many four-year colleges require one or two recommendation letters from your teachers and school counselor. The main reason for this requirement is to get to know you better. Colleges arent just looking at your grades and SAT scores. Theyre seeking to learn about you in a holistic sense – how you interact with your teachers and peers, how you approach the learning process, and what motivates and excites you, to give a few examples.
Teachers can speak to both your intellectual and personal qualities, as well as to the role you play in the classroom on a day to day basis. Simply having an enthusiastic recommendation shows that you made a positive impression and maintained a good relationship with your teachers. If you made a splash at high school, youre likely to work well with your peers and professors at college and contribute on campus too.
Because of all the information and support they can communicate, recommendation letters play a very important role in the college application review process. Given their weight in the admissions decision, what makes some letters stand out while others blend into the background?

How To Format Personal Information On Your Resume
Resume format is one of the most important aspects of designing and writing a resume. Why? Because your personal details and resume info needs to stand out, look good, and be clear. If the hiring manager cant work their way around your resume easily, its already off to a rocky start.
Here are some important formatting facts to taking into account when writing your personal details on a resume:
- Use the same font, font size, and formatting as the rest of your resume.
- Keep each piece of contact information on separate lines.
- Always list your email address in lowercase letters as many recruiters copy and paste your email.
- Double-check spelling of important contact details such as your cell phone number.
- Dont list your details at the very bottom of your resume. Try listing them in a column to the side, under your name, or near the top half of your resume.
