If youre a student in high school, the chance is you probably have some volunteer work and extracurriculars under your belt. If these aspects are relevant to the job you are applying for, you can put them before the education section.

In all other cases, the education section would take the upper hand, and would look something like this:

EDUCATION

Theres a lot more to creating a good resume than just the education section. Become an expert with our complete guide on how to write a resume.

How To Write Degree On Resume

First, check the job listingits the perfect cheat sheet.

Refer to your diploma the same way your future employer talks about it.

If they say BA, you say BA.

If they say B.A., add those periods.

But here’s a great trick: when talking about diplomas, use the preferred abbreviation and the whole form: Bachelor of Arts .

If the ATS expects to see bachelor not BA, this will double your chances of being understood by those annoying robots.

As A High School Student

Example:If you are a high school student, education is most probably top of the list of what you have to showcase to your prospective employer. Therefore it should come at the top of your resume. Some high school students may possess work experience. This category is therefore divided into two sub-sections.

A) Without work experienceIf you are in this category, the educational section of your resume should come after your contact address and introduction. Your resume as a high school student should contain the following

  • CGPA
  • The coursework youve taken that is relevant to the job youre applying for.
  • Academic awards or achievements thus far
  • Clubs or organizations you have been actively involved with

A Major achievements section may be added if you have activities that you feel is worth showcasing, but does not fall under clubs and organizations. The major accomplishments should advertise your desirable qualities such as leadership experience and organizational skills.

B) With work experience If you are a high school student and you possess relevant work experience, your experience should still come after your education on a resume. If the work experience is significant enough, you may summarize your educational information in favor of a detailed description of your job experience. Asides that, your educational information listing should follow the outline stated above.

What Employers Look For In An Education Section

Employers can gather a variety of information about a job candidate from an education section, including:

  • A job applicantâs work ethic, reflected through GPAs or other grade-related information
  • Relevant skills or training an applicant has received through their schooling
  • Name recognition of specific universities, such as ivy leagues, that may give a candidate a leg up on the competition
  • Insight into a candidateâs interests or talents based on academic-related extracurricular activities includedÂ;

Understanding what employers are looking for in an education section included on a resume is key to understand how much or how little information to include.

What an employer is looking for will vary depending on the nature of the job being offered.Â;

For instance, an entry-level communications job at a corporation is likely to require a bachelorâs degree in communications or a related field.

Comparatively, a job in the welding industry may require the completion of a trade school program but not require a four-year degree.Â;

It is of the utmost importance when you are applying to various jobs that you read the job descriptions provided carefully, as this is where you will find the necessary information regarding what educational credentials are required of eligible candidates.

This will also help you to tailor your education section according to what credentials or qualifications you have that meet the requirements of the job.Â;

If Youve Been In Employment For A While

Education Resume Sample

If youve taken a break from your career, its likely that youve developed an extensive portfolio of work experience on your CV.

Dont add unnecessary clutter by including a great deal of education on top of that especially if it happened 10 years ago. Detailing jobs youve had that represent your talents and skills, not to mention, dedication and passion for the industry youre in, will be what attracts most prospective employers.

Include your education, but detailed descriptions arent necessary in this situation; condense information into short lists, with grades and courses but theres no need for module choices or individual subjects to be addressed in detail.

Things Not To Include In Your Resume And Why

When it comes to Resumes what NOT to include is almost as important as the information thats in there. Your Resume needs to give the recruiter a great first impression but it will probably be one of many received. Its therefore important to use the space and words wisely and ditch the unnecessary clutter.

Its never been more important to get your Resume and job application 100% right the first time. Since it will most likely be one of many received, you need to give yourself the best chance at getting noticed. As Resume Writers, we often get asked why certain information hasnt been included.

Heres a list of five things we avoid and why:

1.; Career Objective: Dont waste words stating what you want. Put yourself in the employers shoes. They need to understand immediately Whats in it for me? not what youre searching for in life. Instead of your own personal career objective, we suggest including a career overview that provides a snapshot of who you are, your relevant qualifications, skills and experience and the overall value you could bring to the role.

3.; Personal Information: It is not necessary to include age, height, weight, marital status, health, children, hobbies, religious, cultural or political associations so dont waste space by doing so.

If Youve Just Left School

If youre a recent school leaver, place emphasis on your GCSEs, A levels, or any other accomplishments youve achieved whilst you were in education.

As most roles you apply for wont be looking for much direct work experience, this is a great way to help sell yourself for a role. At the very least, a pass in Maths and English is essential for many jobs, so be sure to include these.

List the subjects you studied and your grades, but feel free to condense them down into less detailed descriptions if youre not sure theyre your strongest selling point. This will also allow more space for other experience e.g. part time/summer jobs that directly relate to the role youre applying for.

Which section should go first on a resume work experience or education? Read on for advice on how to organize your resume sections.

Depending on your personal situation you may want to list first your education section or the work experience part on your resume. It could also depend on the position youre interested in or the skills you have gained from different roles in your professional and academic career.

  • If you have recently graduated or are still studying, it is highly likely that you will have a short professional work history in your desired field or that most of your achievements have come from your academic experience and therefore will benefit more from a resume with the education section before the work experience section.
    • This is especially true for those applicants who have an outstanding academic record with many awards or honors, even if they have a brief work history.
  • On the other hand, if you have been working for several years, even if you are deciding to change careers, you would most likely benefit from a resume with emphasis on the work experience section as this is where your recent expertise will have developed including any transferable skills.

For those jobseekers who are unsure of which section should be highlighted and therefore come first, it is possible that using an online resume creator;or resume template;could help them to build a suitable resume for their ideal job.
