Greys Anatomy Season 17 Episode 7 Release Date And Time

Greys Anatomy fans will have plenty of time to recover from the winter finale, which originally aired on Dec. 17. According to ABC, the Shondaland medical drama was expected to return with its midseason premiere after 11 weeks. Then on Jan. 25 ABC confirmed the release date for Greys Anatomy Season 17 Episode 7 would be pushed back by a week. So, the ABC medical drama will return on Thursday, March 11, 2021. The new episode will be followed by the firefighter spinoff, Station 19.

According to ABC, Station 19 Season 4 Episode 6 is expected to start airing at 8:20 p.m. EST. Then Greys Anatomy Season 17 Episode 7 is expected air at 9:20 p.m. EST and end at 10:21 p.m. EST. The network pushed the schedule for President Joe Bidens first primetime address, which is set to begin at 8 p.m. EST on Thursday night. That said, ABC will air the crossover event once the President is done speaking. So its possible the start time for Station 19 and Greys Anatomy will shift on March 11.

Of course, the March 2021 release date is less than ideal for some Greys Anatomy fans. Viewers will have to wait many weeks before the next new episode is released. But in an interview with Deadline, showrunner Krista Vernoff revealed the shortened episode count is why Greys Anatomy Season 17 Episode 7 wont be back until spring of next year.

Storylines That Could Come Back

In addition to all of the interpersonal relationship drama affecting the characters on Greys Anatomy, there were a few external storylines that never got the chance to resolve in Season 16, and could potentially come back around in Season 17.

The first is the human trafficking storyline from the episode Give a Little Bit. While examining a young patient named Cindy , Andrew DeLuca began to suspect that she was a victim of human trafficking. He attempted to intervene, but no one believed him, and the girl and her aunt were allowed to leave unchallenged. Yet the end of the episode seemed to confirm that Andrew was actually correct, and Cindy was, in fact, in danger. Vernoff revealed that the scrapped final four episodes of the season had included a return to that storyline, but that they never got to film it. I may still complete that story next season, Vernoff told Deadline.

Finally, while its probably a long shot now, theres still a chance that the explosion at PacNorth featured in the final two episodes of Station 19s third season could somehow factor into upcoming episodes of Greys Anatomy. Originally, those episodes were intended to cross over with Greys Anatomy , which would have dealt with the same storyline. While the beginning of Season 17 will likely look very different from the original ending of Season 16, theres always a possibility that some pieces of that plan could carry over.

Which Greys Anatomy Couples Broke Up In Season 16

While a few couples managed to stay the course through Season 16 of Greys Anatomy, the season proved devastating for several others. By far the most shocking breakup was Alex Karev mailing divorce papers to his wife, Jo, after the couple previously got married in the Season 14 finale. Although it was later revealed that their marriage wasnt entirely official, since they both forgot to mail in their marriage certificate following the wedding, Alex seemed to be all in on their relationship. He even re-proposed to Jo at the beginning of Season 16 after she was discharged from a treatment center for depression and PTSD, telling her, I want to grow old with you no matter what, for better or for worse, in sickness and health. Marry me again, please. Yet just a few months later, Alex dropped everything, including Jo, to go be with his ex-wife, Izzie, and their two children.

Also on the chopping block in Season 16 were Meredith and Andrew DeLuca, who broke up seemingly for good after Andrew began to experience worrying symptoms of bipolar disorder. However, the season ended with Meredith offering help to a weeping Andrew, so it would seem the possibility of them getting back together is not completely off the table.

While Greys Anatomy Season 17 might return later than usual with a shorter episode count, it certainly seems like the midseason premiere will be worth the wait. When speaking with Entertainment Tonight after the winter finale, executive producer Andy Reaser teased what Greys Anatomy fans can expect when new episodes resume in 2021. And ultimately, it appears viewers are in for the ride of a lifetime.

Its Greys so its the whole spectrum, Reaser said. One of the things that has been so great about the show, and this is from the beginning when Shonda and Krista were there, way before we were, that the show has always done an amazing job of balancing extremes of tone and emotion, instead of just being all one thing.

The EP continued, You can go from a moment of being overjoyed to a moment of laughing, to a moment of complete heartbreak, to a moment of being on the edge of your seat. And were continuing along that road.

Reaser also hinted the Greys Anatomy premiere in 2021 will likely be another crossover with Station 19.

The virus keeps everyone guessing and its relentless, Reaser said. So its going to take relentlessness to fight it.

Who Is Joining The Cast In Season 17

In addition to Greys Anatomys impressive roster of returning main cast members, the medical drama increased its ranks by two in July 2020, when it upped Richard Flood and Anthony Hill to series regulars.

Flood came aboard the Greys Anatomy ship in Season 16 as Dr. Cormac Hayes, a pediatric surgeon sent to Seattle courtesy of Merediths person, Dr. Cristina Yang , who is currently serving as the director of cardiothoracic surgery at the Klausman Institute for Medical Research in Switzerland. Dubbed McWidow by Cristina, Cormac is the father of two teenage sons who lost their mother at a young age to cancer. Unbeknownst to Cormac, Cristina framed his arrival as a gift for her BFF, although Meredith insisted she didnt need a new man following her breakup with Andrew DeLuca. Cormac and Meredith butted heads at first, but by the end of Season 16, the two were on friendly terms, and Cormac is expected to be Merediths next major love interest on the series.

Andrew Delucas Mental Health

Despite starting Season 16 strong, with his name cleared of participating in Merediths insurance fraud and receiving a promotion to chief resident, Andrew DeLuca had a rocky season both professionally and personally. On the romantic front, he wound up splitting up with Meredith after expressing doubts that they were equally invested in their relationship. The pair attempted reconciliation a few times, but never quite managed to fully get back in sync, and eventually parted ways, seemingly for good.

Meanwhile, Andrew began acting increasingly erratic at work, becoming agitated and emotional in his patient care and confrontational with his colleagues. His sister Carina worried that he was showing symptoms of the bipolar disorder that had destroyed their fathers career and driven their family apart. She urged him to seek treatment, but Andrew refused, frustrated that no one else could see his cases and his choices the way he did.

Further complicating matters was the fact that, while Andrews behavior was indeed troubling, his conclusions were often right. He solved a perplexing medical case midway through the season, demonstrating strong diagnostic skills, and at the end of the season, Andrew was the one who correctly diagnosed Richard with cobalt poisoning. He was even right when he suspected that one of his patients was a victim of human trafficking, although no one at the hospital believed him.

Which Greys Anatomy Couples Are Still Together

Season 16 of Greys Anatomy was tumultuous for a lot of couples, but there were a few that escaped the shortened season intact. Amelia and Link exited the season happily, with Amelia giving birth to their son, whose name has not yet been revealed. Miranda Bailey and her husband Ben were also still going strong at the end of Season 16, even after Miranda brought home a teenage foster son to live with them without first consulting Ben.

But Greys Anatomys other married couple, Richard Webber and Catherine Fox, ended the season technically still married but separated. Catherine expressed interest in reconciling after Richard began experiencing symptoms of cobalt poisoning, but Richard refused, and the season ended with their marriage seemingly in its death throes.

And while engaged couple Teddy Altman and Owen Hunt have also not technically split up yet, they didnt make it down the aisle either, thanks to Teddy accidentally leaving Owen a voicemail of her having sex with her ex-boyfriend, Tom Koracick, right before their wedding. After listening to the message, Owen postponed their nuptials by claiming he needed to go into emergency surgery. So while these two havent officially called it quits yet, things arent looking promising.

Any Chance That Patrick Dempsey Or Sandra Oh Will Return In Season 16

Get this: In an interview with TV Line, Vernoff teased fans that one of their favorite characters will make a comeback in season 16 … but she didn’t confirm the actor. “I’m trying to get someone back,” she said. “There’s someone I’m hoping will make an appearance this year, it’s a real maybe. I’m trying.”

While fans were hopeful that Patrick Dempsey’s iconic character Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd would come back, they weren’t so sure how the show would bring him back from the dead … again. Last season, he played McDreamy’s ghost in season 15’s “Day of the Dead” episode.

Other fans on Twitter guessed that , Cristina Yang , or Addison Montgomery would return to Grey Sloan.

Not too long after Vernoff’s initial tease, TV Line shut down the rumors, confirming that they weren’t able to secure the mysterious alum. When a fan asked for details in TV Line’s Ask Ausiello, they answered: “Major update: Its not happening. Ultimately, a deal just didnt come together.” There’s still hope for season 17, though!

Greys Anatomy To End Season Early Will Not Resume Production On Remaining Episodes

ABC/Gilles Mingasson

ABC is pulling the plug on the remaining episodes of Greys Anatomy this season.

The medical drama will not resume production to complete its season, the network announced Friday. The episode titled Put on a Happy Face, set to air Thursday, April 9, will now serve as the season finale.

The decision comes two weeks after production on Season 16 of Greys Anatomy was shut down in response to the coronavirus pandemic. In a memo to the shows cast and crew at the time, the shows producers said they were waiting to see how the coronavirus situation evolves.

Greys Anatomy is just the latest show to shuffle its schedule in the wake of the production shutdown. Earlier on Friday, ABC set a new timetable for American Idol, which was originally supposed to begin airing its live shows in early April. Instead, the show will continue to air additional pre-taped episodes as the coronavirus outbreak keeps people locked indoors.

The final season of The CWs Supernaturalhas also been delayed by the outbreak, with co-showrunner Andrew Dabb warning fans that it may be a while before work can resume and the final episodes make it to air. On cable, AMC was also unable to complete work on the final episode of The Walking Dead Season 10, forcing the network to wrap the season early and delay the episode until later in the year.

Is Alex Karev Really Gone

Unfortunately, yes. After 15 years, original cast member Justin Chambers, who portrayed Dr. Alex Karev, announced in January of 2020 that he was leaving the show and that his final episode had in fact already aired. This came as a surprise to longtime viewers, especially since during Alexs last handful of episodes preceding the announcement, he was named chief of staff at Pacific Northwest General Hospital, re-proposed to his wife, Jo and made a grand gesture of support for his best friend, Meredith. When viewers last saw Alex in the November 14, 2019 episode, My Shot, he was headed off to Iowa to care for his ailing mother, but was still deeply invested in his life in Seattleor so we thought.

On January 10, 2020, Chambers issued a shocking statement announcing his departure. Speaking to Deadline, Chambers said, Theres no good time to say goodbye to a show and character thats defined so much of my life for the past 15 years. For some time now, however, I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices. And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time. As I move on from Greys Anatomy, I want to thank the ABC family, Shonda Rimes, original cast members Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens, and the rest of the amazing cast and crew, both past and present, and, of course, the fans for an extraordinary ride.

It’s going to be a slightly longer wait to find out Meredith Grey’s fate.

Grey’s Anatomy, which is currently on its usual months-long hiatus, will resume its 17th season one week later than initially planned. Instead of returning March 4, the medical drama will now be back on Thursday, March 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, ABC announced Monday.

Additionally, the Grey’s firefighter spinoff, Station 19, will continue season 4 that same day at 9 p.m. ET/PT, followed by the return of A Million Little Things. The latter will then move to Wednesdays starting April 7.

The delayed Grey’s return comes with an emotional and dramatic cliffhanger in the fall finale with Meredith’s continued battle with the coronavirus. Though it appeared she was on the mend, her health quickly deteriorated to the point where her mortality came into question.

“No one can predict how the disease will go in a healthy person or an older person. There’s no consistency to it. And Meredith Grey is as a young, healthy person, healthy doctor. The fact that it’s gotten this far, it’s super scary for all of us, as fans and also people living with this. There’s an urgency because it’s COVID,” executive producer Meg Marinis tells ET.

Meanwhile, Station 19 will be without its challenges when it returns with two Black members of the firehouse getting arrested during a tense confrontation with police officers.

Below are ABC’s spring premiere dates.
