What Is Vikings: Valhalla’s Release Date

Before you start scrolling through Netflix’s thousands of offerings looking for Vikings: Valhalla, know this: No release date has yet been announced for the series.

As this is a brand-new show that was confirmed in November 2019, Netflix is likely nowhere near announcing a start date for the series. For comparison, just take a look at The Witcher. That show was first announced way back in May 2017, but it wasn’t until Halloween of 2019 two-and-a-half years later that Netflix announced the release date. That debut date, by the way, was December 20, 2019 meaning it wasn’t announced until less than two months before the premiere. While Vikings: Valhalla may not have quite as long of a wait given that it’s spinning off from a property instead of building one from the ground up, there’s no reason to believe that Netflix will announce a release date for the show anytime soon.

What Will Happen In Vikings Season 6

Following the events of season five, Bjorn is now King of Kattegat and may very well use his position to exact revenge on his mother, Lagertha, for her lies.

Meanwhile, Ivar is travelling the world, looking for his place, only to meet Oleg of Novgorod . With all of these dangerous people having their own agendas, there will certainly be bloodshed.

The finale to part one left fans with a lot of burning questions, but arguably the biggest one has now been answered by a sneak peek clip from the second half .

How Will It Connect To The Original Series

Its pretty safe to say that all your fan-favorite characters from Vikings will be dead and hopefully hanging out with Odin in Valhalla once the new spin-off premieres on Netflix. That doesnt mean the likes of Ragnar, Lagertha, Bjorn, or Ivar wont be impacting the story moving forward. Legacy was always a big part of Vikings, so we should probably expect to get bigger insight into how their past adventures will influence these new characters lives.

It seems that the bloodline will continue, too. Remember how Ragnars brother Rollo turned his back on his people and faith to take the throne as the first ruler of Normandy? Well, William the Conqueror will be featured in Vikings: Valhalla, which has sparked speculation about Standens possible return to play the part. While history may state that Erik the Red was the first Viking to discover North America, Ragnars third son Ubbe landed there in the final season of Vikings, leading to a story detail the new series may address.

One of the biggest connective components will be the coastal town of Kattegat. The small settlement where we were first introduced to Ragnar and his pals grew into a bustling trading port by the end of Vikings season 6. The time jump between shows will reap positive results for Kattegat which will now be seen as one of Europes largest ports.

In an interview with Collider, Hirst discussed Kattegats growth and the ways in which the port will connect both shows:

Vikings Season 7 Isn’t Happening

Vikings Saison 4 : Résumé & Explication de la Fin !

Though many Vikings fans felt that the show wasn’t as engaging after Ragnar died, the series wasn’t cancelled due to a drop in ratings or interest. Rather, showrunner Michael Hirst has said that bringing the story to a close in Vikings season 6 was a creative decision. Speaking to Variety in 2019, Hirst explained:

“I always knew where I wanted the show to go and more or less where it would end if I was given the opportunity. What I was trying to do was write the saga of Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons. After six seasons and 89 episodes, thats what I felt finally Id done. We stopped shooting the final episode in November last year and I felt that Id said all I needed to say about Ragnar and his sons. I told my saga.”

By the end of Vikings season 6, only one of the original characters from season 1 was still in the show, and his arc had reached a natural conclusion. While there are certainly ways that the show could continue to follow Ragnar’s surviving sons, there was already a sense in season 6 that Vikings was running out of stories to tell. The series was brought full circle with a final raid on Wessex by Ivar and Hvitserk, while Ubbe’s adventures in the west fulfilled Ragnar’s dream of exploring the world. But while the story of Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons is finished, the story of the Vikings is not.

The series was co-created, written and executive produced by Die Hard screenwriter Jeb Stuart, with Hirst providing oversight. Vikings: Valhalla will be set more than 100 years after the events of Vikings, and will follow other famous figures from the sagas such as Erik the Red and Harald Hardrada.

Vikings Future Explained: Season 7 & Valhalla Spinoff Series

Vikings season 7 isn’t going to happen, but fans of History’s Norse saga can return to Kattegat in the upcoming spinoff series Vikings: Valhalla.

History Channel’s saga of Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons has come to an end with the Vikings season 6 finale – but that’s not the end of the story. While Vikings season 7 isn’t on the cards, fans can look forward to a return to Kattegat in the upcoming sequel/spinoff series Viking: Valhalla, which will pick up more than 100 years after the events of the original show.

Loosely based on the Norse and Icelandic sagas, Vikings began around the year 793 and since then has explored a period of several decades thereafter. Initially focusing on the legendary Viking ruler Ragnar Lothbrok, the focus shifted to Ragnar’s sons after he was killed off in season 4. In Vikings season 6, Ragnar’s first-born son Bjorn Ironside campaigned to become King of Norway and fought off an invasion by the Rus . Meanwhile, Ragnar’s second-oldest son Ubbe led a group of settlers across the sea in search of a rumored “Golden Land” – known today as North America.
