Theres a lot of conflicting advice about when one-page resumes are best, when two-page resumes are better, and the main purpose of your resume to begin with! So Im going to clear this up

Lets get started

Create A Clear Education Section

Having a clear education section is essential for your resume, especially if youre a recent college graduate or have minimal work experience.

If you lack professional experience but have a good track record in school , your education section should be highly detailed to highlight all of your education-related accomplishments.

On the other hand, if you possess more than a few years of professional experience, then its appropriate to keep your education section short and sweet.

Additionally, if youre a student or recent graduate, list your education section above the experience section of your resume. This way, you emphasize your most marketable qualifications at the top of the page.

Here are the main points to include in a standard education section:

  • The names of your university, community college, or technical school
  • Location of the schools
  • Date of graduation
  • Degree
  • GPA

Additionally, include relevant coursework on your resume if youre a recent graduate and dont have much work experience yet.

Here are two examples demonstrating how to format your education section:

Know What An Ats Doesn’t Like

Formats that are difficult to scan for a machine can hurt your chances of passing through the ATS.

That’s why it is better to stay away from the infographic layout and it is best to use one of the three standard resume formats for applying online.

You should also avoid tables, acronyms, and uncommon fonts and typeface in your resume.

What Is A Resume

What Your Resume Should Look Like in 2020

A resume is a written document of everything that relates to your work history. Your resume can include your experience, skills, achievements, education and qualifications. As your resume is often the first impression that your potential employer will have of you, its also one of the most important documents that you will ever create.

The resume is most often used as a tool to secure the first job interview. Upon applying for a job, you will usually have to submit your resume to a hiring manager, HR manager or recruiter. Based on their impression of your resume, he or she will decide whether to call you in for an interview.

Your resume needs to be up to date, meticulously correct, and its essential to land a job – you cant / wont secure a first interview without it.

How Many Pages A Resume Should Be

How long should your;resume;be? The answer is that the length of your resume depends on a number of factors. It depends on how much experience you have and what level candidate you are. If you’re an entry-level candidate, a page should be plenty.

For more experienced candidates, it’s fine to have a longer resume. Read below for more detailed information on how long your resume should be, and tips for making your resume the perfect length.

A Cv Is A Comprehensive Statement Emphasizing:

  • professional qualifications
  • activities
  • special qualifications

A CV can vary from two pages to several pages. Professionals seeking academic positions and non-academic positions in science, higher education, research, and health care typically use a CV. It is also used to seek a fellowship or grant and is expected for some positions overseas. Consult with faculty members in your field to determine what is expected and appropriate for your field.

Best Resume Formats For Experienced Professionals

The chronological resume format is also the best option for experienced professionals applying for a job within the same field of expertise.

It makes it easier to get the message across that you are already an expert.

Using a combination resume layout can be more useful if the job is skill-based.

How To Write Resume Bullet Points

How To Write A WINNING Resume – Resume Examples INCLUDED

For a typical, experienced professional with more than ten years experience, youll have twenty-five bullet points across two pages to make your case. If youre earlier in your career, you may have only 10-15 bullet points across one page. In either case, the High Score Resume treats each bullet point as a scarce, precious resource to be optimized for your success.

The High Score Resume makes the most of each bullet by demonstrating your success with numbers. Each bullet is constructed of a success verb and a specificnumerical accomplishment in your field or role. This entices potential interviewers by providing quantified, proven results that detail your successes.

The High Score Resume allocates bullets to jobs according to its importance in landing your next gig. Your most recent jobs are the most important, so the last five years get 10 to 15 bullets. The next five get five to 10. The next five get five in total. Anything beyond 15 years ago gets zero bullets. One of the reasons to hire me is the experience I had in 2002 with is simply not persuasive to bosses looking to hire in 2020.

As youre writing each bullet point, craft it to persuade an employer to hire you because of the benefits you can deliver. You might practice reading it out loud with the phrase You should hire me in 2020 for this role because I followed by the text of each bullet. Bullets are written to support your argument that you can bring new High Scores to your potential boss right now.

When To Use Three Pages Or More

A resume of this length should be reserved for a few very specific cases, including candidates with academic backgrounds, government employees, or senior-level executives. This type of resume is appropriate for those with extensive experience who want or need to list speaking engagements, publications, patents, licenses, or other information in addition to their work history, education, and skills.

In some cases, youll actually need a curriculum vitae, or CVwhich is a more comprehensive document that can be several pages longinstead of a resume.

The Best Format For Your Resume Is The High Score Resume

The High Score Resume focuses your resume on sharing the high scores youve reached and the achievements youve unlocked throughout your career. It is a format that enables you to present yourself in the most effective way possible without worrying about bragging. And it provides hiring managers and recruiters concrete proof of what youre capable of.

The High Score Resume also is very clear to people reading your resume about what youd like to do next, i.e., what your next level is going to be. By showing what youve already achieved, its easy to explain what youre capable of next. So while there are other parts of your resume that will deserve attention, the High Score Resume focuses most of your time and effort on the two most important sections of your resume: your work experience and your professional summary.

What To Include On Your Resume

How Many Pages Should Your Resume Be in 2021?

What should absolutely be included on your resume? And what can you ditch?

My new client, Frank, was struggling hard with this question. He had only three years of professional work experience — and his resume was three pages long.

I had to hand it to him — the kid had spirit. Frank was an active volunteer, had won plenty of academic accolades during his college career and had taken on a lot of different job responsibilities in the three years he had been with his current company.

Did I mention that the average time a recruiter spends looking at your resume is six seconds? There’s no time for a page flip.

Here are a few fast, hard rules for what should — and shouldn’t be on your resume.

1. References available on request.

Ditch it. It’s implied that you have professional references who can speak on your behalf. No need to show up to an interview and push a hard copy into your interviewer’s hands, either. Though it’s a smart idea to have those references ready to send over.

2. Your GPA.

Only if your industry calls for it. Such as, if you’re applying for a role in investment banking or engineering. The only other time your GPA is worth including is if you’re a semi recent grad and you graduated magna cum laude — or with notable academic accolades.

3. Company descriptions.

4. Computer skills.

5. Internships

6.Your address.

7. An objective statement.

When Should Your Resume Be Two Pages

Most resumes should be two pages long. Two pages are the standard length in 2021 to fit all your keywords, work history, experience, and skills on your resume.Â;

Here are some situations that indicate you should use a two-page resume:

  • You are not an entry-level candidate.

  • You have enough relevant skills, experience, and keywords to fill at least a page and a half.

  • Youâre submitting a resume online.

  • Youâre handing a resume to a hiring manager.

If youâre concerned a two-page resume will slow down a hiring manager during theirÂ;six-second resume test, remember that this âsix-secondâ figure comes from a review after an ATS scan has determined your fit for the position. If youâre able to bypass an ATS, one study suggests that when time constraints are not an issue,Â;recruiters are 2.3 times more likelyÂ;to prefer a two-page resume.

Highlight Your Relevant Work Experience

Your work experience section is the most essential part of your resume because its the best representation of your qualifications.

If you lack formal work experience, however, dont worry. Simply title this section Relevant Experience and use it to highlight details about your volunteer work, extracurriculars, or relevant school coursework.

To create a logical and informative work experience section, list your relevant experience from most recent to least recent . For each job, list the following information:

  • Your title
  • Company location
  • Dates of employment

If youre still currently working at a company, you can simply write , present for the employment dates.

A general rule is that each job title includes about 35 bullet points of your main duties and achievements working in that role.

3 parts of a strong bullet point:

  • 1st: Action verb
  • 2nd: Quantifiable point
  • 3rd: Specific and relevant job duty

Example 1:

Trained5+ cashiers, managing their cash limits and guaranteeing quality customer service at all times.

Example 2:

Spearheadedthe development of the first media kit amalgamation for all company projects, increasing national sales by 8%.

One reason the above bullet points are effective is that they use action verbs to grab the attention of hiring managers. Describing your experience using strong action verbs helps illustrate to employers what youve accomplished and what kind of skills you have.

Remove Irrelevant Or Optional Information

You might have included some optional sections like hobbies and interests or volunteer experience. If this information doesnt make your resume more relevant or valuable to the employer, consider removing it. Here are a few additional pieces of information you might consider removing:

  • Proficiency in skills the employer will likely expect you to have like Microsoft suite or soft skills like teamwork
  • Phrases such as references available upon request
  • Your physical address
  • Out-of-date education information such as your high school if you have an associates or bachelors degree

Do Not Use A Bitmoji Or Other Alternative To A Photo

Should Your Resume Be One Page?

âIâm stumped by this trend,â says Caitlin, Zipjobâs Marketing Manager. âI love seeing creative displays of personality on a resume, but Bitmoji are cartoons. Stand out from the applicant pool in other ways that will earn you more respect.â

From a technical standpoint, as with other graphics,Â;BitmojiÂ;turn into jumbled nonsense to an ATS. Unlike logos or artistic headersâwhich can be appropriate for graphic designer resumes in print formâBitmoji never have a place on a resume.

Keep your cartoon self firmly in the realm of social media and informal communication: your professional resume document is neither.

Why Your Resume Should Be Three Pages

You could have more than two pages if youâre a high-level or senior-level executive or in a very complex, technical field. For example, a scientist may need more than two pages to showcase background, education, published work, and studies.Â;AnÂ;executive resumeÂ;usually shows a clear progression of responsibility and job titles with many related experiences.

Your professional document can be three pages if you are actually writing a Curriculum Vitae . This is more common if youâre applying for jobs outside of the USAâread more about theÂ;difference between a resume and a CV here. In the US and Canada, there are some other industries that use CVs such as academia and medical.

Federal resumesÂ;also follow a different format and can easily be three pages or more.

For most job searches, you should focus on your most recentÂ;10 to 15 years of experience.

âConsider utilizing yourÂ;Â;to fit the information that is important, but not strictly necessary on your resume,â suggests Caitlin.

Try Different Margins Ranging From 5

Appropriate margins for a resume are .5, .75 or 1 inch. The goal is to make sure your text is evenly distributed on the page and not packed in too closely. Try adjusting your margins to the different options to see which looks best for your resume. Usually, resumes with less text will have larger 1-inch margins and resumes with more text will have smaller .75 or .5 margins.

Best Resume Formats For Executives

You probably already know whats best for you.;

A chronological format seems to be the most suitable option.

It will show what needs to be shown: your experience in the field as an executive.

However, depending on the industry and position, there might be some scope for a bit of creativity with your resume.

So, consider soliciting help from;professional resume writers to strike a perfectly balanced and targeted resume.

;If, however, you are facing an industry change scenario, going for the combination approach would be the most appropriate.;

The Ideal Resume Length Depends On You

How Long Should My Resume Be in 2020?

Are you a student or new graduate with qualifications that dont quite fit on one page? Go to two. Are you a CEO with a penchant for getting to the point? Try a one-page resume. The rule is there is no rule.

Dagliano recommends removing resume length from the equation. Ask yourself:

  • Is the content relevant?
  • Is the theme consistent and clear?
  • Is the information current?
  • Does it distinguish you from the competition?
  • Is it well written and grammatically correct?

Rule 3 Add Keywords Relevant To Your Work Industry And Experience

When potential employers search the web for qualified candidates, they do so by typing in key skills the position requires.

If you add too many of these key terms, your resume looks cluttered, but if you leave something out, they might miss you altogether.

Find a happy keyword balance with good flow!

Note: I tend to focus on keeping experiences and skills directly relating to the role included within the resume.

Do a quick search on your favorite job search engine around the job you are targeting, and find the Must Haves or Required skills, making sure they are well established within your resume.
