This is one of the most commonly asked questions I receive at OCPD and there are a lot of different schools of thought on this topic. My very first career tip was on this topic, and since then I have developed a two-step framework to help you with this decision.
Step 1: When reviewing an older experience on your resume/CV, the first step is to ask yourself whether it highlights a particular skill or experience that you want the employer/residency program to know about. For example, is this experience highlighting your strong leadership skills? Your research abilities? Your commitment to working with underserved populations? If the experience is not honoring a relevant skill or experience , then you can consider removing it from your resume/CV. If the answer is yes, go to Step 2!

I think its important to remember first and foremost that professional etiquette states your resume should only be one page long. This single page also needs to include your educational background, skills, and contact information.
Your professional career may span the decades, but you cant write about every job youve ever held in your lifetime on it.
My advice is not necessarily to think about how far back your resume should go. Rather, tailor your resume to go back as far as needed for the position youre applying for.
Look at the opening, then review your background. Share positions that are most relevant to the job and its responsibilities and duties. Make sure to include a link to your LinkedIn profile, too. You may include as many of your former jobs on LinkedIn as you like and allow HR to scroll through your profile for more information about your background!
Keep your overall resume, however, short and relevant for the position youd like to be hired to do.

Of course, if you’ve got an impressive accomplishment or title sitting outside that two-decade limit, include it.
“If 30 years ago is the role where you discovered a patent still in use today, you ought to mention that,” says Ceniza-Levine.
You have a few different options for how you chose to work that information in. If a title you’ve held or company you’ve worked for is likely to impress a recruiter, consider a section called “earlier work history” or something similar where you can simply list previous jobs, by noting only the title, company and location, says Amanda Augustine, a career coach with TopResume. Or you could try including it in a “career notes” or “career highlights” section at the bottom of your current work experience by writing something like: “additional experience working for ABC company or serving clients like XYZ,” adds Augustine.
If the role you want to include is one where you did discover a patent or win an impressive industry award, you could also draw attention to this by folding such an achievement into the summary statement, which is typically a short paragraph at the top of your resume that acts as an elevator pitch to readers selling your skills and experience. Or you could include it in a section following your work history that lists awards or accomplishments you’ve earned over the course of your career.

Employers and recruiters dont need to know what you did in high school for an entry-level role after graduation. The purpose of a resume is not to show your entire life experience, but to give employers a sneak peek that entices them to reach out for an interview.

Most hiring decisions are based on an applicants last three positions, so list only these in the experience section if you can show sufficient expertise.;;
Read the job postingthe expected years of expertise are usually mentioned there. Only go back as far as the job posting states. If the job posting does not list the required years of experience, only go back 10 to 15 years.
You can blanket older experiences that are relevant to your job around other notable experience if you are targeting a career change and want to include something that you did two or three decades ago. You dont need to give the dates.
Remove undergraduate dates but include a masters graduation date if it was earned later in life. For any certifications that you have earned, list only their expiration date, as long as the certification is still valid.
Include the most relevant keywords that are current in your industry and that appear in the job description. Resumes are screened by applicant tracking systems, so scan the job description for keywords that you should include in your resume.
Convey to the reader what makes you valuable; for example, you have a track record in identifying problems and implementing the right solutions, and give specific examples.
Resume Tip: If you must emphasize more than 20 years of earlier experience, then just note 20+ years rather than say 25, 30, or more.
