When Is It Ok To Include References On A Resume

If an employer specifically asks you to include references on a resume, forget everything weve said and do it! But you will rarely receive this request, so this issue will not come up very often.

If an employer is seeking references, be sure that the employer wants the references to be listed on your resume. It might be a better idea to include references in a separate attachment that is not actually part of your resume.

Every resume needs to have five components:

  • Header: Your contact info
  • Employmenthistory: Your professional track record
  • Education: Where did you go to school?
  • Skills: What are you really good at?
  • Thats a lot of information to include in a one-page document, and most experts agree that a resume should be only one page. Two pages are sometimes considered OK, especially if your job history is so stellar that you were both an astronaut and a brain surgeon. But for ordinary mortals, no hiring manager has ever complained that a one-page resume is too short.

So references almost always present two problems: 1) Nobody was expecting them, and 2) References will usually make your resume spill over onto a second page.

Even worse, this second reference page in a resume might be totally blank at the bottom, containing nothing but references, in just a few lines at the top. This kind of spill-over is never a good idea, and it suggests that you need to trim your text to hold your resume to one page.

Why Your Resume Should Be One Page

What does an ideal one page resume look like?

Your resume can safely stick to one page if that is all you need to market yourself. One page resumes can be scanned over quickly by the human eye, so a one-page resume could appeal to in-person scenarios like job fairs and networking events.

If you have a two-page resume with no work experience, it probably contains filler words and information that isnât relevant to your current job application. Cut your resume down to one page by tailoring your resume to your relevant experience.

If youâre making a career change, your past experience is unlikely to be fully relevant to the new job target. Try to lead with your transferable skills and abilities if youâre in this position, rather than experience. A functional resume format may be better for you.

The same goes for recent grads. Odds are that you donât have two pages of relevant experience. However, some graduates have multiple internships, volunteer work, on-campus activities, or publications that belong on a resume. If you just graduated, read more about how to search for a job as a recent graduate.

    When Quantity Equals Quality

As you evolve in your career, you’ll find that things that were once relevant on your resume aren’t anymore. For example, if you’ve been in your career a few years or are changing careers, there’s no need to list every duty for every position. Learn to recognize when compromising the quantity of your experiences will impact the quality of your employment story. If you have enough relevant experience, training, and credentials pertaining to the position to showcase on more than one page of your resume, then go for it.

Note: I said relevant. This doesnt mean you detail all your accomplishments since your high school babysitting job. It also doesnt mean listing every college course you’ve taken and certification you’ve earned.

As a recruiter, I can tell you, if Im going to read a resume thats more than one page, it better tell a good story about what you bring to the table. Listing every task you did as a manager doesn’t make you a good manager. But if you tell me that you increased productivity by 25% or highlight process changes for multiple teams at several companiesyou’re justifying that space.

If you can succinctly quantify your accomplishments to tell how you made a role, job, project, or assignment better and you need more than one page to demonstrate it effectively, thats time well spent.

Why You Should Consider Creating A Two

If you are a mid-level professional, there are several good reasons for creating a two-page resume. Perhaps the most important of these is that many companies now use an automated applicant tracking system to carry out the initial screening of the resumes they receive .

Such systems are programmed to privilege resumes that use and repeat specific keyword phrasesthe bots assess both the placement and the frequency of industry-specific keywords in a resume. They also look for the length of experience one has in using particular job skills.

Expanding your resume to two pages will enable you to repeat these essential keywords throughout your professional experience section.

Although this may seem awkward and redundant stylistically, it is one of the best ways to ensure that your resume is one of the scanned resumes that actually make it to the stage where it will be considered by the human eye of a hiring manager.

Does Your Resume Really Need To Be On One Page

Today Im revisiting one of the most classic job search questions, now with the perspective of nearly 10 years working in the recruiting world and also having worked with hundreds of clients with very different backgrounds.

Does your resume really NEED to fit on one page?

The short answer is no, they dont. This is not a black and white rule.

The longer answer is that although that is true, most of the two page resumes I see actually should be on one page.

So which bucket do you fall into? Are you in the bucket where you need to edit down to one page or does your experience justify a longer resume?

Lets dive in. You should probably be cutting down your resume to one page if

Youve been working for less than 10 years

This is the most black and white rule I have when it comes to figuring out if you should have a one or two-page resume.

If this seems impossible to you, the thing thats important to remember is that even if youve had many jobs during those years, not all of them deserve equal real estate on the page.

Your earlier jobs have 3+ bullets describing them

Earlier or less relevant roles can have one to two bullets or even none at all. If youve gotten promoted three times with your company, devote the most bullets to the job with the most impressive responsibilities.

Not all jobs on your resume are created equal and if you talk about all of them in intense detail, eyes will gloss over and miss the most impactful and impressive work experience you have.

    Leave Out Your High School

Very rarely is your high school going to be relevant to a position youre applying for. Unless you went to a very specialized high school, or you know that the recruiter reviewing your application also went to your high school, theres no reason to include it.

Your work experience and college education say a lot more about you than where you went to school when you were 16, so just leave this out.

    Focus On Your Key Accomplishments

If you have an extensive amount of work experience, it can be tempting to include a variety of accomplishments on your resume.

However, to keep your resume to one page, hone in on two to three of your most impressive and directly relevant achievements. In particular, be sure to cut any redundant information.

For example, if you want to demonstrate your customer service skills, including two different anecdotes about how you improved your customer satisfaction ratings is unnecessary. Instead, just include the one that best reflects your strengths.

List Important Accomplishments Instead Of Tasks

How Many Pages a Resume Should Be

Instead of creating a list of all the job duties youve had at each of your professional experiences, list only your greatest, most relevant accomplishments. Be sure to review the job description so you can include achievements the employer will find interesting. Quantify your success with numbers when possible such as the number of people you lead, an amount or percentage of time you saved or an amount or percentage of money you made or saved.
