Now lets take a look at the ordering of the headings. Of course, your contact information should be at the top of your resume. As usual, you should place the Summary as first heading on your resume. Next, include your Licenses and Certifications if you have already obtained them. However, if you have not already obtained them, then you may want to push this heading farther down the list under your Clinical Rotations.
Next, include your Education followed by your Clinical Rotations. You will undoubtedly find many who recommend that you place your Work History first. Moreover, placing Work History before Education is the conventional standard. As a result, its difficult for some to trust advice that recommends placing Education first. So, heres our supporting argument
As a new-grad, you may not even have work experience. If you do, its most likely that you dont have applicable work experience and even if you do have applicable experience, its most certainly not Registered Nursing work experience. You cant obtain RN work experience without an RN license and you cant get an RN license without first graduating from an accredited nursing program and passing the NCLEX.
Showcase Other Relevant And Transferable Skills
Did you learn medical transcription, preparation of nurses notes, medical coding, or medical billing? These skills are relevant and transferable to the practice of Nursing.
Consequently, it would be a good idea to mention these skills in your new grad Nursing resume in order to expand your value proposition.

Now comes the hard part, nailing your first nursing job.

Do Nps Need A Resume Or Cv
So who needs a resume? The majority of NP school students, most likely!
If you are a NP student who has followed on a traditional career path: starting as a RN, going to nurse practitioner school, graduating and planning a clinical career seeing patients in a clinic or the hospital youre someone who I would recommend crafts and submits a traditional resume.
A CV is better suited for someone who perhaps has a long standing history of an academic career. Maybe this is a faculty member who is planning to move into a research career, or applying to clinical instructor positions, or doing something a little bit more academic. In that case, youre likely better suited to craft a CV for your next application.
Now, what if you are someone whos doing both of those things? Lets say you have, or you want to have both a clinical and an academic career. Not a problem: you can have both a traditional resume and a CV as a nurse practitioner. But if you are planning for your first clinical NP job, chances are, you need what I would call a traditional nursing resume that highlights your clinical career achievements thus far, on 1-3 pages.

When To Change The Order
Everyone is different and so your resume may need to follow a different order than the one listed above. For example, if you actually have a lot of related work experience, you may want to list that higher on your resume to emphasize it. You should list things in the order that makes you look best. Decide where your own strengths lie – whether it’s your education, your certifications or your work experience – then adjust the order of your resume sections accordingly.
How To Get Your Contact Information Right
Maybe youve created the perfect resume with amazing content on your skills and experience. But if you mess up the contact section, you wont be getting a lot of interview invitations .
For your contacts, include:
- Name
- Title – For nurses, your best bet is likely Registered Nurse.
- Phone Number – Double-check, triple-check this. One typo can really mess up your chances of an employer contacting you.
- Email Address – Make sure to use a professional email address , and avoid that email you created back in 5th grade .
- Location – Applying for a job abroad? Mention your current location.

Add In Your Education
The other major part of your new graduate nursing resume is the education section. Since you are a recent graduate, you likely don’t have much work experience yet, meaning you want the emphasis to be on your education.
In your education section, list each college you attended. For each college, you’ll want to include the following information:

In this section, you may also want to list your grades or GPA, as long as they were good. You can either list the specific courses you took and the grade you received or list your overall grade point average.
