Start With A Resume Objective

A good resume objective first tells the hiring manager what your career goals are, and why youre passionate about the position.

In three or four sentences, your resume objective should:

  • state your skills
  • highlight your relevant experience
  • detail your education or training

The relevant experience can be something you accomplished at school or elsewhere in your life, as long as it relates in some way to the job.

When writing the objective for your first job resume, consider the companys needs. Dont just write about what you want from working there. Instead, show the hiring manager how your goals align with theirs. For example:

The Structure Of An American Resume

Contact Information The first thing in your resume should be your name and contact information. This should be at the top of the page, should be large enough to be easily seen, and should contain the following.

  • Name
  • Telephone number where you can best be reached, usually your mobile
  • LinkedIn profile

Do not include a home address or links to your other social media pages. You can either put this information on the top of the first page or, better yet, included it as a heading so that it will show up on all the pages

Title The next part of your resume is the title. This should be the same as the position youre applying for. It lets the recruiter know exactly what position youre interested in and sets the tone as they are reviewing the resume.

Summary It is good to start your resume with a 2 to 3 sentence summary if your skills, experience, or education related to the job youre applying for. This allows the recruiter to quickly recognize your qualifications and encourages them to read the remainder of the resume.

Professional Experience You then turn to your employment experience. The section will contain details about the jobs you have worked at during the last 10 to 15 years. Even if you have more experience, this is all you need to include because anything prior to this is either no longer relevant or has already been discussed in other job descriptions. The jobs should be detailed in reverse chronological order, starting with the most recent first.

Now that youve written down every credential you can think of, its time to take a break. Stand up, stretch, and breathe. The worst of the process is over! Before you begin the revision process, turn your attention elsewhere. Maybe take a quick walk, have a snack, or take a nap. Put thoughts of a resume out of your head for an hour or so.

Youre back and refreshed? Great! Take a moment to re-read what youve written. Check for these common errors:

  • Spelling & Grammar
  • Run your word processing programs spelling and grammar check.

    Two: Use Your Resume To Practice For A Successful Interview

    The next step to take is to use your resume as an interview template or outline. Here are three ways to accomplish that.

    • Use your resume to build a story: On a job interview, your interviewer doesnt want you to spew a bunch of facts and figures. They already have access to that information. Its these facts and figures that attracted them to you in the first place.

    At this point, you want to build a story around that information. What about the information makes you right for the job? What has your experience taught you and how will that benefit your employer?

    Here are 4 essential ATS-beating strategies to keep in mind when creating your resume.

    1. Keep it simple

    • Make sure your resume format is simple and straightforward. The ATS software cannot read and understand images, graphics or borders. These will just confuse the system and your resume is likely to be rejected as a result.
    • Avoid special characters and fancy fonts, these are also likely to confuse the computer program.
    • Standard fonts of a reasonable size are best. Non-standard spacing can also throw off the ATS.
