How To Create A Resume In Microsoft Word-Tutorial

Once you’ve launched MS Word, a window of templates will appear. Scroll down until you see the template options designed for resumes — there will be at least two of them. Double-click the one that suits your style and personal brand, but don’t be too particular about design just yet … you can customize these templates quite a bit.

Create Your Base Format

This will help you to tailor your resume to fit specific jobs!

The idea of the base format is to provide outlined sections with the correct spacing and number of bullet points.

You are essentially creating a skeleton for your resume that you can edit and adjust over time.

For example, this is what your base Work Experience section may look like:

Work Experience

Job Title 1, Company NameDate â DateâJob Title 3, Company NameDate â Date· Descriptive Sentence· Descriptive Sentence

As you gain more work experience, you can return to this base format and make changes as need be.

Because you have already outlined the section, you wonât have to worry about reformatting the entire resume to make a few simple changes.

Modify Headers And Footers

There are several situations where placing certain elements in headers and footers makes working within the Word document much easier. You may want certain elements to repeat across pages, and if you put them in the header or footer, they repeat automatically across many or all pages. You may also want to position elements in a certain way, and putting them in the header and footer ensures that their position doesnt change while youre working on the content of the page. This video shows how to modify the template headers and footers.

What Is A Rsum

Simple Resume Format Download In Ms Word

A résumé, often referred to as a CV , is a summary of a persons background and experience, including work experience, education, and even volunteer work, and its most common use is to send to potential employers when searching for a new career opportunity. In fact, though taking on a much different form than that of what youd expect a résumé to look like today, Leonardo Da Vinci even did this himself, and he is often given credit as the first person to create a resume.

Of course, the résumé has undergone quite the transformation since Da Vincis 1482 version, drastically so during the age of word processors and digital typesetting in the 1970s40 years after résumés became an institution. Fast-forward to today and not only do you have your standard .doc or .pdf résumé, but youll also see people uploading video résumés on YouTube and using social media platforms like LinkedIn to sell themselves to companies.

We should be thankful for these developments because now we can skip the quill and ink and jump straight into Microsoft Word.

What an abysmal example! Its redundant. It uses a filler phrase . It includes a weak, overused adjective . And, finally, other than listing years of experience, it doesnt say what sets the candidate apart from all the other writers who may be applying for the same job.

Lets give it another try.

Expert content creator with fifteen years experience writing top-performing feature articles.

Much better. Now, our candidate isnt saying shes a good content creator; shes confident that her fifteen years on the job make her an expert. Shes demonstrated her communication chops by making sure that her statement uses powerful language, with nary a weak verb in sight. And shes included an important insight the content shes written has been top-performing.

Same As Everyone Else:

Employers have developed a trained eye for spotting resume templates. Recruiters can spot them a mile away. The two benefits of using a resume is that it requires little time and effort to write your document. Basically, its the lazy way of doing it. What type of signal do you think these copy and paste skills send to the hiring manager? I would think that this applicant, if hired, would always look for quick and dirty ways of solving problems. I might be cynical here but can you afford to risk that?

Write A Winning Profile

How to Create a Resume in Microsoft Word (with 3 Sample ...

Profile sections can be one of the harder things to add to a resume. They’re essentially short biographies that draw attention to your key traits. This is the primary area of focus if youre building a job-specific resume. There are a few rules to help make your profile a winning one:

  • Avoid I and you.;Even though youre talking about yourself, avoid using first-person references. Focus instead on attributes and results.

  • Highlight your strengths. Suppose youre noted for being detail-oriented, creativity-driven, and have demonstrated history working in time-critical environments. Craft a short statement that incorporates these attributes clearly and concisely.

  • Bold key points. The goal of a Word resume profile statement is to call attention to a small handful of items. Make it easier on the reader by putting them in a bold font. Readers eyes are naturally attracted to contrasting and offset text. Take advantage of this reality to gain attention.

With these attributes in mind, go ahead and type out a short profile statement. For our purposes, lets use:

“Detail-oriented digital marketing professional experienced in delivering creativity-driven solutions in time-critical environments. Practiced success in leading cross-functional teams in a global setting. Noted for unique insights and handcrafted solutions.”

How Should I Format My Resume In Microsoft Word

The format you choose will depend on your experience level!

There are 3 basic resume formats to choose between:

  • âReverse-Chronological: Details your most recent job and works backwards from there. This format focuses heavily on work experience.â
  • Functional: Focuses on skills and education rather than work experience. This is a good option for recent graduates or applicants with minimal work experience.â
  • Hybrid/Combination: Combines elements of both the Reverse-Chronological and the Functional. This is a good option for applicants with gaps in their employment history.

Choosing the best format for your needs is key. For more help on this subject, check out our guide on How to Choose the Correct Resume Format in 2021!

Use A Clean And Professional Font

Choosing the right font for your resume design is arguably the most important decision you have to make. Since a resume is a document filled with text, using a font that improves readability is very important.

Try to avoid using the default fonts on your computer. Use a modern sans-serif font with a clean design. Pick two fonts, one for your headings and another for paragraphs.

There isn’t a better name for the template below. The Spick and Span resume might be the cleanest-looking sheet on this list.
