The Importance Of Ats

If youre uploading your resume into an online form as part of your job application, it is critical for your resume template to be compatible with applicant tracking systems . An expertly written resume complete with a sleek design and optimized resume keywords could still fall short if the formatting isnt ATS compliant.

When you upload your resume, applicant tracking systems parse out the text to make it searchable for a recruiter. They may also transfer the information from our resume to a uniform digital candidate profile. Even if youre perfectly qualified for the job, your chances of getting a job interview are much lower if an ATS cant accurately parse your resume.

ATS-friendly resumes are often similar to minimalist resume templates but go a step further to account for ATS algorithms and behaviors. Among other considerations, ATS-friendly resume templates account for the fact that:

  • Many ATS cant handle tables or images
  • Parsing accuracy is dependent on heading names and correctly sequencing your work experience information
  • Certain resume fonts might not be displayed properly in all ATS
  • PDF and docx file types work better than others

How you decide that depends on a few factors:

Don’t Miss: Why Do You Need A Resume

Top 10 Tips For Picking A Resume Template

  • Understand the standards of your industry
  • Familiarize yourself with the tone of your company
  • Reflect on which sections are most important for your career
  • Think about where youll need to add the most writing
  • Evaluate the presentation and attractiveness of the template
  • Pay attention to whether icons and color are appropriate for your industry
  • Check if youll have space for a photo or logo if its needed
  • Assess the most eye-catching section and make sure it matches your needs
  • Choose the resume that captures your personal style and feels right for you!
  • If there was one resume template that worked for everyone well, our website would be much, much smaller. But the truth is, a variety of templates are important to help capture the uniqueness of each candidate. And as beautiful as each resume template might be, a hiring manager doesnt want to see the same one 100 times in a row. At the end of the day, the choice comes down to you. Its important to evaluate the level of professionalism in your industry and at the company youre applying to and decide if a modern, stylish resume or a more traditional one would be in line with those standards.

Beyond that, its about highlighting the experiences and abilities that make you unique. In some industries, a pop of color or a friendly photo can do the trick. In others, youll have to rely on your expert writing to sell yourself as a top candidate

Caution: Before Using Any Online Resume Builder

Theres one more piece of information you should know before acting on ANY of the online resume builder reviews above.

In my experience, too many job seekers focus on an eye-catching resume design when applying for jobs or emailing recruiters, but they dont put enough focus on writing great content and information that will appeal to reader. So no matter which of these top 10 resume sites you choose, focus mostly on the text and information you add, not the design.

In fact, I still recommend a single-column layout.

And the truth is, if I were creating my own resume today, Id use a regular Word template, not any online software or tool.

I discussed this with a colleague on LinkedIn here:

Microsoft Office has good templates available, and Hloom is another good site for templates.

I can understand if you dont want to tinker with resume formatting, spacing, etc., and everything that comes with creating it in a Word doc, but thats what Id personally do.

Just keep this in mind when choosing any drag and drop software above you should always pick a design that lets you focus on the content and info because thats what employers want to see. And dont choose a format that doesnt give much space to describe your recent work, accomplishments, etc.

Because the FIRST place I look on a recruiter is your work history, under your one or two most recent roles.

Id also never recommend a resume layout that doesnt begin your employment history on the top half of page 1.

    The Most Important Clues:

You must know that a recruiter spends an average of 7 seconds reviewing a CV, that’s not much time, so type the most important information on the first page of the document, because if the employer does not find interesting information on the first page, you can be sure that they will not look at the second page.

The candidate’s photograph, yes I know in the UK, USA, Canada or Australia we do not add a photo to the Resume, but in other countries the regulations are different. According to the administrators of LinkedIn, a profile with a candidate’s photo is more trustworthy and people who have published their photo receive more offers to cooperate. The same dependence applies to application documents.

Write only the relevant information in the document, appropriate to the specific job. Add information that adds value to your professional profile or is interesting for your future employer.Develop the Career Summary section – the reader’s attention will focus on the content of this section first.Use listed information in your professional skills and experience, this form will make your CV more transparent.

Avoid creating large blocks of text, make the space between the sections to make your document more transparent and legible.

Before sending your CV to your employer, save your document in PDF format . The PDF format ensures that the recipient receives the document exactly as you saved it.

Why Shouldnt I Use A Resume Template

Some job seekers believe that employers frown upon the use of templates, but its not true. Resume templates are just an easy way to give your application an attractive design and help you organize your information.

However, many people still prefer not to use a template. If, for example, you have a knack for graphic design and want to create your own one-of-a-kind resume, then using a template isnt for you.

If thats the case, you can make a resume in Microsoft Word or Google Docs without a template. But to help you do this, we suggest learning how to write a resume properly first, and using a resume outline to help guide you through the process just so you make sure to include all the essential information.

The 3 Resume Formats To Choose From

Before you go on with choosing one of the different resume templates, you should decide on the optimal resume format the one that will highlight your strengths as a candidate and mellow the flaws in your job history.

    PRO TIP:

Tailor the resume to the position you are seeking. As you read through the job description, highlight and focus on key words and phrases that are most important to the hiring team. Integrate those words and phrases into your resume.

    Debi Douma-Herren

The 3 most popular resume formats are:

    • Chronological resume organizes the information the way LinkedIn does from the latest position to the first one, with education, interests and additional info listed later.
    • Functional resume keeps the focus on your skills and experience, rather than employment history. Its the go-to choice for candidates with employment gaps and those without much hands-on work experience.
    • Combination resume takes the best of both worlds and allows you to spice up your dry employment history with some juicy details about your skill set and achievements.

Each resume format suits better when applying for certain positions. Chronological resumes tend to be the most preferable format with traditional employers, while startups and edgier companies will likely fall for a combination resume.

Choose The Best Font For Your Resume

Best Resume Formats for 2020 [3+ Professional Templates]

While there are an infinite amount of fonts out there, you will likely want to choose one that is either a serif font or a sans serif font. Serif fonts are more traditional and well-suited for a resume that is trying to communicate a more professional approach. Consider typefaces such as Cambria, Garamond, or Book Antiqua, all refreshing styles as opposed to the once-standard Times New Roman. Sans serif fonts are more modern and, because of the lack of tails, can offer more legibility. San serif fonts are recommended for any type of resume as they become more widely used. Recommended fonts in this family would include Helvetica, Avenir, Open Sans, Roboto, or Calibri. As you build your resume, think about choosing one font and playing with variations of it throughout. Use bold for your headers, standard for descriptions, or small caps for contact details. One font can offer many variations, and making the most of those styles can demonstrate a strong grasp on design elements to enhance your resume. And remember, always choose 12pt size font.
