Detailed Early Retiree Resume Tips

Tip 1: Early Retiree Résumé- Format

I believe that early retiree resume tips starts with the good old standard chronological résumé. It is still the best and only way to go. Some say it allows the reviewer, from HR to hiring manager, the ability to decide your age and exclude you. Guess what? If they dont want me because I am over 50 then I dont want to be there. The whole thing about retiring early and often is you want to follow your passions and pursue opportunities, not a job where you are not wanted for whatever reason.

I use a standard chronological format because it works. Going to a functional format résumé to try to hide your age only raises questions to the reviewer who will probably just assume your age or assume that you have some employment gaps you are trying to hide. I am sure there are many more experienced with this issue than I am. This is just my opinion due to this functional format being suggested to hide those very things.

I think there are many sites that offer a decent résumé template and provides advice on résumé writing. I started with the job posting site Monster.com to get an idea of my format. Take a look at the above link and navigate the site to get some great ideas. Here are some details of my résumé:

Add Skills That Employers Want

Review job listings that interest you and look for skills that employers want and you have. Be sure to include soft skills, especially teamwork and communication, along with skills that reflect that you’re ready to learn and gain new experiences. As a retiree, you have years of knowledge and experience to offer, so your resume should reflect that.

Focus also on the summary near the top of your resume. This can be an excellent place to explain your relevant experience and skills. List the technology you know how to use, especially if it’s recent or listed in job descriptions you like. If you have recent training or workshops you attended within the past few years, include that on your resume. If your resume doesn’t already use strong verbs to explain your professional achievements, update them.

No matter what your age, the best way to market yourself is to showcase your best attributes and accomplishmentsespecially the ones that align with the job youre vying for.

Your aim should be to keep the resume focused on the job target and downplay irrelevant information, says Isaacs. This can be especially tricky if youve gone through a career change over the course of your work life. So even if you went from the nursing profession to the hospitality industry, Isaacs says to try and highlight skills developed in one career that are transferable to another career.

Also important is to show how youve developed and improved throughout your career by including accomplishments that reflect professional growth. If youve been promoted, include previous job titles as well as higher ones so the history of advancement is clear, says Isaacs.

Leadership development expert Carol Lempert recalls a woman who was a librarian before she retired, and after a few years of retirement, she was lonely and bored. She was a very social person and she loved learning, Lempert says. She hung up her shingle as a consultant to libraries.

Meanwhile, another acquaintance whod worked as a trucker for his whole career also discovered that he was bored after he left work. He went and got a job at Home Depot, Lempert says. He was social, he knew stuff, he liked people, and it was a little extra money.

Leave Out Outdated Skills

If you look at a modern CV template for an older person, you’ll see it looks a bit different from older templates. That’s because the skills you’ve got to list are very different. Sure, 20 years ago, it was a big deal to be able to use Microsoft Office apps and different types of email software, but those are now foundational. If you list them as skills, it immediately dates your resume. Another tip is to avoid saying exactly how long you’ve had experience of a particular skill: it’s enough to say 10+ years.

Stephanie Holt, who advocates for women in STEM leadership, has this advice on skills from long ago:

“It is critically important to have a real understanding about what the relevant skills currently are in your industry and to speak to those skills. Technology has made it so that over time what used to be considered skills are now considered a minimum requirement and those should be mastered but not mentioned.”

Dont Fudge The Format

Though you may hear people suggest that a functional resume style is ideal for older workers, dont fall for it. I never recommend using a functional resume, says Isaacs. This type of format is typically used by job seekers trying to hide something, and employers know that so they start looking for potential issues as soon as they start reading.

Also worth noting: Functional resumes do not perform well in applicant tracking systems.

Isaacs suggests sticking with the traditional reverse chronological format. As long as yours is visually distinctive, concise, and to the point, theres no need to mess with what works.
