A common question:; Should you add degrees or credentials after your name on your resume and LinkedIn profile?

Because you are marketing yourself in the job market, be careful how you present yourself so your target employers see you as a viable candidate.; Whether or not to put letters after your name depends on what kind of work you want.

  • Go for it, if you want work in the field or profession implied by specific degrees and credentials.
  • If you dont want to pigeonhole yourself into one field, let your name stand on its own.

If you are looking for work in a specific field, you want to be defined by your degree or training. The most common letters after peoples names are PhD,; MD, JD/LLD, MSW/DSW, RN, MPH , MFA , MEd , PsyD , MVDr , DO , DC , EdD, PharmD , DDiv , MPA , and DDS/DMD .

As you can see by this list, most letters indicate the persons choice of profession. Using letters after your name on your resume is a shorthand way to tell the job market that you looking for jobs in your profession or want to use the specific skills mastered through training in that profession. They tell people that you have those professional skills, and are dedicated to your field. For example,

Tips For Creating A Resume Filename

You think you have your hands full with your resume, your cover letter, your application in general. So it may be crazy to;realize that when a future employer downloads your files to read, youre then competing not with other applicants resumes, etc., but with their resume filenames. Its true! The game starts as soon as you hit send.

Heres how to make sure you have a good filename for your resume.

1. Include Your Name

It seems silly titling a file with your name when its your file in the first place, but always title your job materials as though you were titling it from the recipients point of view. You leave out your name, and your file is likely to be lost in the shuffle. Plus, having your name directly in the file means your name is being seen, even when the file isnt being accessed! Anytime the recipient opens that folder or looks for another file, theres your name.

2. Keep It Snappy

You dont want a run-on filename. Keep it under 24 characters and spacesplus the .doc extension. Many computers only show the first 24 characters, so avoid getting elided or truncated on their screen.

3. Follow the Rules

Letters and numbers are all fine, plus a few standard keyboard symbols You can capitalize where correct; thats particularly useful if you have a long name and need to omit spaces to save space. You can also use dashes.

    How To Make A More Memorable Name

    Creating a memorable business name is the first step in getting into a customers mind and is also a task thats easier said than done. Your business name should aim to stop a customer in their tracks and give an extra thought on your product among your wave of competitors. Some tips to create a memorable name would be:

    • Use rhythmic pronunciation or alliteration (Referred Resume, Career on Request
    • Try using a word that wouldnt be relevant when out of context
    • Keep it short and simple.

    What Should You Name Your Resume File

    You should name your resume file First-Name-Last-Name-Target-Job-Title-Resume. For example, Robin-Walker-Marketing-Assistant-Resume.pdf would be a good resume file name.

    Using your full name and the job title separated by dashes or underscores makes your resume file immediately identifiable to the hiring manager, who may receive hundreds of applications.

    Match The Name On Your Resume With Your Social Media Profiles

    Another aspect of your name that you should pay attention to is how consistent it is across your social media profiles such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Roughly 94% of recruiters use social media in their recruitment efforts, so its important to make things as easy on them as possible. Assume that recruiters will stalk you on social media and adjust your name accordingly. I display Dan Clay on my resume, and that matches all of my social media profiles.

    Include Your Name In The Title

    Your name should always be in the title of your documents. If you have a particularly long one, you may opt to just include your last name; thats your call. Just make sure your name is in there in some form. Thats how the hiring team will be able to match you to your application documents. If you do include your first name, put it first, rather than reversing the order.

    Should You Put Your Middle Initial Or Suffixes On Your Resume

    You can drop the Sr., Jr, II, III, or any other suffix that comes after your name, as these just present another data point that potential employers will have to sort through. That, and they may make you sound pretentious or arrogant, which you definitely dont want.

    Youd also likely be better off dropping your middle initial as well, unless its closely associated with your identity like it is for William H. Macy or Michael J. Fox. Michael Fox just sounds weirdif your name also sounds weird to you when you drop the middle initial, then dont do it. Most people will prefer to leave it off, however.

    Now that you know the format youre going to use, its time to start your resume. First things first, employers need to know who you are and how to contact you.

    List the following contact details in your resume header at the top of the page:

    • Name
    • Telephone number
    • Email address
    • Link to online portfolio
    • LinkedIn profile

    Traditionally, you would also include your mailing address on your resume. However, this is no longer mandatory because most job applications are sent via email.

    Resume File Name Length

    Both applicant tracking systems and email programs generally preview attached documentsincluding previews of file names. And if you use a 71-character file name, as one applicant did, the file name is going to get cut off. You have plenty of room to include the pertinent information in a standard-length file name; dont try to turn the file name into a second resume. Its possible to be both brief and descriptive.

    The short answer is that one page is the ideal resume length for most candidates. However, if you have a lot of relevant work experience, it can be two or even three pages.

    Just note that unless youre applying for an upper-management position or an academic post, one page will be enough for hiring managers. Even Elon Musks resume could be tightened into one page.

    If youre applying for an academic position, youll need to send a CV instead of a resume. Keep in mind that CV templates are often several pages long, and contain more information to show the progression of your academic career.

    Keep It Casual And Memorable

    Formatting your resume in MS Word

    First off, a resume is a marketing piece, not a legal document. It should not be confused with any legal document, like a check, job application, last-will-and-testament, to which one would normally sign ones name.

    Besides, being formal or doing what everyone else does isnt necessarily the best way to market ones self as a unique individual. The idea here is to get some name recognition going. Adding a middle initial just adds another bit of data to obscure your name. Lets put it another way would your boss or co-workers know you by your middle initial? They usually call you by an informal first name and your surname, right? The people reviewing your resume should be looking at a name that sounds approachable and similar to other names of co-workers. Bob Greene is just easier to recall and more approachable than Robert F. Greene.

    Is your given name just a bit too common? The John Smiths of the world, all 897,324 of them, might want to add the entire second name to the header for a little pizzazz. Better to add the second name, though, than just the initial, in my opinion. Or go back to first and second initials.

    Skip the Junior and the III, IV, and V, though. Most recruiters are too overworked to be interested in whether there were two, three, or fifty Vincent Aaron Van Aardvarks in the family tree before you.

    Be Brief And To The Point

    As a rule, you want to keep the entire file name, including file extensions and spaces, under 24 characters. That means using a short, recognizable file name. Create a file name that includes the most important information in the shortest possible amount of space. This will help people find it quickly and understand what they are looking at, which improves your chances as a candidate.
