Action Verbs For Product Manager Resumes

Every accomplishment listed should start with an action verb suited to the product manager role. As a manager, this can mean that you led or coached a team, developed strategic insights, or were promoted ahead of schedule due to your prowess. As a communicative innovator, you may have overhauled an aging system, aligned the goals of multiple departments, or implemented a new process. Perhaps your product assessing ability led to reduced development times or improvements based on the testing you conducted. Emphasizing your ability to lead a team, assess a product or system, reduce costs, or improve customer adoption are all effective strategies for product managers. Always focus on your accomplishments rather than your basic duties, and hiring managers will be more likely to take notice.

While your experience speaks for itself, you still need to list down all the relevant skills you have. This section also gives you a chance to shine in other aspects. You can add non-product management-related skills, such as market research capabilities, to further solidify your resume.

However, start off with your product management skills and then move on to others. Here are some skills you should have and can add to your resume.

To be an effective product manager, you need to have all or most of the skills listed above. In case you don’t, only mention the ones that apply to you since you will be tested on them.

The Extracurricular Activities Section

PM roles require a very large breadth of skills, and it can be difficult to demonstrate all of them through your work experience. The extracurricular section is therefore a great opportunity to cover these such skills. It can be particularly useful in demonstrating leadership skills, especially if you havent yet had much opportunity to lead in a work situation.

Note: If youre applying to Google, you should consider calling this section Leadership & Awards to fit in with their recommended CV structure. Obviously youll need to make sure that the content demonstrates those two things.

The extracurricular section is more important for recent graduates than experienced hires, but even for PMs with a lot of impressive work experience to fit in, leaving a bit of space to talk about your personal projects can add a whole new dimension to the you on your resume.

If thats the case, you can leave out this section and fill the space by adding more content to the work experience section. A career summary or experience synopsis is your personal product specification that should include years of experience, industry tenure, product discipline, specialist competencies, academic credentials, and value-adding personal traits. Stick to one paragraph with sentence construction as concise as possible. Your aim is to ensure that a potential employer will gain an accurate understanding of your abilities as a Product Manager.

A few do’s and don’ts to consider:

• Do mimic the specific language portrayed in the vacancy ad
• Don’t apply too descriptive adjectives
• Do spell out terms/names/certifications in full with corresponding acronyms in parenthesis
• Don’t use first person or third person referrals

There are a few key product resume manager skills and product manager resume keywords to be aware of. First and foremost, as a product manager you will need to be able to effectively manage and prioritize product development. You should also have strong communication skills, as you will be working closely with cross-functional teams to develop new products. Additionally, it is important to have a good understanding of data analysis, as you will need to be able to make decisions around pricing the product or investing in various marketing tactics based on data points.

Finally, some other important keywords to focus on include product strategy, product life cycle management, and product marketing. By including these skills and keywords on your resume, you will be sure to catch the eye of potential employers.

Resume Layout And Formatting: Keep It Professional

Display an image of efficiency and design-savvy. A recruiters first visual impression of you comes from your product manager resume, so show your design skills here, but dont get too artsy. Products must be user-friendly and get the job done without clutter. That goes for your layout, too.

I’ve hired other product managers and reviewed thousands of product management resumes from job seekers across geographies, industries, and experience levels.

This guide is the culmination of my experience both as a product leader and recruiter. With it, my hope is to take away some of the pain that you might face in your job search.

I have crafted this post from the perspective of an employer rather than from the perspective of a product manager job seeker. Every employer has different needs and looks for different traits and skills. What Skills Should You Put On A Product Manager Resume

To determine what skills to include in your resume, youll want to refer to the job posting. Depending on the company and position, they may be looking for particular skills or expertise.

A few of the skills that companies usually look for in Product Managers are: marketing research, UX/UI design, digital marketing, data analytics, A/B testing, beta testing, budgeting, customer analysis, financial analysis, forecasting, HTML, JavaScript, Jira, SQL, user research, product roadmaps, Agile methodologies and vendor management. If you have had the chance to learn coding skills, that is also worth mentioning.

Work Experience In A Product Manager Resume

Product management is what you need to excel at.

Your skills should reflect keywords from your contributions. To make this easier, you may simply copy your groups as your primary product manager skills – key skills which appear in the first line.

For example, “Product Management” is the primary key skill as per the example and it is represented at the very beginning of the key skills section.

You should remember to use product management keywords, especially the ones in the target job description.

Further, from the highlighted terms in the product manager resume, it is easy to note the key skills:

The Additional Skills & Interests Section

Product managers need to be adept at using a wide range of tools, methodologies and technologies and this section gives you the opportunity to list yours.

As you can see in the resume example above, you can also list any foreign languages you speak, as employers generally look favorably on them.

You should also list any programming languages , as well as relevant tools and product management methodologies that youre familiar with.

Under Interests, listing a few hobbies is an opportunity to show some more of your personality and to stand out from the crowd. Its also probably the only place where you might be able to squeeze in a drop of humor but we advise against doing that unless it comes easily.

However, if you feel youve already covered your personal interests in Extracurricular you can change this section to just Additional skills.

Additional tips:

• List things in sentences rather than lots of bullets which takes up too much vertical space

DONT

• Include generic, uninteresting things that everyone likes doing, like watching Netflix or hanging out with friends, as hobbies

What Is A Product Manager Resume

A product manager is responsible for:

• defining and actualizing the product vision of the organization
• directing end-to-end product development lifecycle
• coordinating with internal/external stakeholders to determine the demand for a specific product
• identifying potential customers, and how to gain their support.

They are responsible for the right product/right time and everything that entails.

They develop strategies for pricing that maximize profits and market shares without leaving customers unhappy.

The Product managers must be able to monitor marketing trends and determine how to use them advantageously. In addition to excellent customer service skills, they must be highly proficient in the English language and a variety of computer software. Tell A Narrative About Your Career Progression

The job responsibilities of a product manager vary drastically from company to company and even from department to department.

As such, you want to tell a cohesive story about why you’re the best fit for the company. One major variable about your product management story is the stage at which you worked to develop products.

Yes, this means customizing your resume for each job to which you apply. The best way to do this is to create a few versions of your resume. For product managers, it’s recommended you have the following types of resumes:

• Go to market resume
• Growth resume
• Enterprise resume

It’s more work, but it yields significantly better results. Our data shows that customizing your resume for each job application results in 36 percent more interviews. It’s worth the effort.

You should try to relate your past work to the given environment. Look at the job description for the role you’re seeking to determine which of your resume versions addresses what they want for the position.

Next, if you do have industry-specific experience, you should customize your resume to talk about that experience as much as possible.
