Should Resume Be In Chronological Order

An Alternative To The Functional Resume

What is a Chronological Resume Format | What’s Reverse Chronological Order

I definitely want to see everything laid out in context, said the recruiter. Ive seen plenty of people that try to use a functional resume thats not in that context, and I tell them, Youre just shooting yourself in the foot.’

That said, recruiters understand that people change careers and cant always count on their work history speaking for itself.

If youre trying to make that transition, yes, youre going to want to try and list your transferrable skills, said the recruiter. But again, I wouldnt do it so much where youre listing everything at the top . Instead, the recruiter suggested taking a more blended approach.

Mention Your Educational Background

Once youve listed your work experiences, follow the same strategy to fill out your education related details in reverse order. This section doesnt need to be as elaborate as the work section, though. Here, you only need to focus on what you studied, when you studied it, and where you studied at.

For instance, if you hold a Masters Degree and are currently pursuing your PhD, theres no need to mention your high school diplomas. You can simply include your previous and ongoing college degrees. On the other hand, if youre a fresh graduate or have limited work experience, you can include your high school education alongside your undergraduate degree.

For every qualification that you include, dont forget to mention the:

  • Degree & program name
  • Name of the educational institute
  • Period attended

You may also mention your CGPA, majors/minors, and academic achievements. Unlike the work experience section, you dont need to elaborate on your courses or study matter under each heading.

Housekeeping Rules That Apply To All Formats:

  • Make sure you put all your contact details on every page, make it easy for the employer to call you up for an interview.
  • You have to put exact dates against every employment and education. If you dont it will look slightly dodgy and you have to be prepared for a lack-of-dates grilling.
  • All education and qualifications should be listed. The fact that you majored in art history doesnt mean you cant apply for a Java consultant job it means you are trainable and can learn anything.
  • The layout should be pleasing on the eye and never distracting, allow for enough white space in between your text, boxes and bullet points.
  • Make it a habit to use a spel cheker , as your intended audience will swiftly delete a resume that contains typos.

When To Use A Reverse Chronological Resume

All job seekers should aim to create a one-page reverse chronological resume as it showcases a stable record of your professional background. Itâs good practice for providing clarity and making relevance and quality a priority.

The most relevant and important things should be shown first if you want to make a strong first impression.

But, there are some exceptions where you should reconsider using this format:

    • You have gaps in your career history, e.g. youâve worked at multiple jobs and companies in a short period of time.
    • Employability issues, e.g. you havenât been employed for the past year or two.
    • If you have no work experience, itâs not the best approach since it highlights your work history.

In some of these cases, the skills-based format or hybrid resume would be the better option.

What If I Have Gaps In Employment

Gaps on your resume are normal. It would help if you still used a reverse chronological order resume to show your employment history and experience. Don’t try to make a combination resume like some guides allude to. Just explain to your employer that you have gaps in your experience and explain the reason why.

Why Its The Most Popular Resume Format

Itâs a modern format and common approach used by job seekers when making an application.

Unlike listing in chronological order, it highlights the most recent and relevant details first.

It also reveals no gaps in your employment history as it shows a consistent timeline of your career. Meaning, employers can easily see your corporate progression and professional development.

Since itâs highly contextual to the job youâre applying for, it makes your application more impactful for recruiters.

The right resume format will boost your chances of an interview.

Too many people make the mistake of thinking that a resume’s purpose is to get them a job. Actually, resumes open and close doors. Their main purpose is to make an employer interested enough to invite you in for an interview. As such, knowing which resume format will work best in your favor is key to your success. Just as people come in different sizes and shapes, so do resumes.

    The Hybrid Resume Format

Theres a name for this. In the space between the functional resume and the reverse-chronological resume is the hybrid resume, also known as the combination resume.

Like the functional resume format, the hybrid resume has space at the top of the page for skills and accomplishments. Unlike the functional resume, it leaves the bottom half of the resume for a more traditional approach to the work history, where each position is accompanied by a blurb that outlines responsibilities and accomplishments.

Here is a hybrid resume example:

Tips For Making The Most Of The Chronological Format

Strive for visual balance and distribution in your resume, so that, for example, you dont have one huge section and several tiny sections.

Remember that a resume/CV should almost always be one page only, so you need to be judicious about what to include. If you have extensive job experience, or if youre highly educated, it may be impossible to list all your achievements and credentials.

Bullet lists, in particular, can take up a lot of vertical space. Consider arranging bullet lists in side-by-side columns, or simply summarizing your accomplishments in one text block .

If youre still having trouble fitting everything onto one page, avoid resorting to formatting tricks like using a tiny font size or making the margins too small. Look for widows on your page, which is where one or two words spill onto a second line, making your resume one line longer. Thoughtful trims can usually eliminate these space-eaters.

If you experiment with different resume templates, you may also find that simply choosing a different template will make your resume fit onto one page.

How To List Sections In Reverse Chronological Order

Weâll cover how the main sections of your resume should be structured when creating a reverse chronological resume. Later, weâve also included and analyzed proven examples that have got candidates interviewed at even the most competitive companies.

Despite how much experience you have as a professional, it works for almost all candidates.

    1. Professional Work Experience

The first job title to mention should be the most recent position youâve worked in.

Whatâs more important than the amount of experience and jobs youâve had is its relevance. So, take into account if itâs related or helpful in any way, shape, or form to your prospective employer.

When describing your experience, the key details should be written down first. That includes information such as:

    • Duties and responsibilities
    • The impact youâve made
    • Accomplishments

    Hereâs an example below:

    2. Education Section

As youâre listing your qualifications, start with the latest one youâve achieved.

Then, go backward by writing down the awards youâve achieved before that. This makes the date of your achievements clear and it brings attention to your formal knowledge in specific areas.

    Hereâs an example of this:

    3. Additional Sections

Repeat the process from the previous steps but for your other resume sections.

Hereâs an example from the certifications section:

Who Should Use A Chronological Resume

Weve discussed at length what the structure of a chronological resume looks like and what each resume section entails. Now its time to look at who benefits from this resume format.

One of the best things about a chronological resume is that it can be used by just about any job seeker, irrespective of their industry or experience. Most job seekers are familiar with the layout and find it to be an easy way to organize their professional and academic information.

In other words, theres no specified group of job seekers and candidates to whom this resume style is beneficial to. Anyone can use the format and tailor it as per their experiences and requirements.

That said, theres no denying that a chronological resume is most effective for applicants who have solid work experience. The format enables them to easily list all of their accomplishments, most recent to first, and show recruiters that they have sufficient experience and skills.

There are also instances where using a chronological resume isnt the best option. Sure, you can use it and tailor it according to your needs, but there are other formats that can help you more. For example, if youre switching careers and your last three jobs have been in a completely different field, you should use a functional resume style. This will allow you to highlight your skills needed for the industry youre aiming to be a part of, while also showcasing your work history.

When To Consider A Different Type Of Resume

Some employers prefer a Cv, a functional resume, or a combination resume. If you are not certain which type of resume will yield the best results, contact the hiring manager and ask which type of resume the company prefers to receive. In addition, consider using a different type of resume in the following situations:

    • Youve job-hopped a lot. Whether by chance or by choice, job-hopping often leaves a negative impression on hiring managers. Consider using a functional resume if you have a history of jumping from one job to another.
    • Youve changed career tracks multiple times. If you have tried different jobs out for size and changed career tracks more than once, its likely that you have many skills employers will find appealing. Highlight skill and minimize career change by using a functional or combination resume.
    • You want to transition into a completely new career. If you have desirable skills, certification, or education and want to make a career change, a functional resume that places a large amount of emphasis on these aspects will prove more attractive than a chronological resume that focuses on unrelated positions youve held in the past.
    • You dont fit the mold. If youre not sure that your past history will help you obtain the job youre applying for, listen to your intuition and pick a different type of resume. Consider using a functional resume that highlights transferable skills youve acquired. This will improve your chances of winning an interview.
