Public Tours Of The Corvette Assembly Plant Expected To Restart By Spring Of 2020

Corvette Factory Tour – Corvette C7 Build

The Corvette Assembly Plants Corvette Display Area is Receiving a Facelift

Its been two and a half years since the public has been allowed to tour the hallowed halls of the Bowling Green Assembly Plant, the home of the Chevrolet Corvette. The last general public tour went through on June 16, 2017 and since then the plant was reconstructed for the production of the next-generation Corvette which will officially start retail production in February 2020.

In their weekly email, the National Corvette Museum tells us that public tours will restart Spring of 2020. Thats great news that the public tours will restart but even more importantly are the Buyers Tour and the VIP Tours which are a major reason for doing the Museums R8C Deliveries. Once those tours are in place we imagine the public tours will start shortly thereafter.

When those tours restart, Corvette enthusiasts will see that the Assembly Plant has undergone a further renovation at the front of the plant to improve the Corvette display in front of the Bowling Green Assembly Plant sign.

The NCM tells us the main reason for the upgrade is for the safety of those who come by and take photos of the Corvettes in front of the Corvette Assembly Plant.

The display is being backed up towards the BGAP sign and two drive-up concrete ramps will replace the steel ramps that previously held the cars.

Contruction of the new display started on November 1st.

We Visit One Of The Oldest Corvette Events In The World To Find Out

Chevrolet unveiled its completely new 2020 Corvette Stingray on Thursday, July 18. As luck would have it, the same day saw upwards of 400 Corvettes and approximately 1,000 Vette fans roll into the small western South Dakota town of Spearfish for the 48thBlack Hills Corvette Classic. This annual event is hosted by the Sioux Falls Corvette Club, and brings in Corvette owners from around the country to enjoy an incredible mix of mountain, canyon, and open prairie roads through the region. The four-day festival isnt the largest celebration of Americas sports car, but having endured nearly as long as the Corvette itself, its one of the oldest.

The 2020 Corvette Stingray Revealed:

It also happens to be in the stomping grounds of yours truly, as I hold down Motor1.coms western office in Rapid City, just 50 miles south of the action. More importantly, the Black Hills Corvette Classic is very much a drivers event the overwhelming majority of attendees arrive in Corvettes from the C5 generation on up, and yes, owners are predominantly of retirement age. In other words, this group is the prime audience GM hopes to reach with the new C8. Sort of, anyway. More on that in a bit, but heres a teaser. My takeaway from this event can be summed up in two words: Cautious optimism.

While attending the events show-and-shine in downtown Spearfish, I had the opportunity to chat with Sioux Falls Corvette Club Board Member Barry Konken. Aside from selling Corvettes and having a deep ‘Vette passion inherited from his father, Konken is very active both with the club and the Black Hills Corvette Classic as an organizer. 2019 marks his 33rd year at the event, and this time around the groups arrival to Spearfish coincided with the C8s reveal. The livestream was on a big screen for attendees at the group’s hotel convention center, and according to Konken, it was unlike anything he’d seen.

Chevrolet Corvette Production Is Being Shut Down And It’s Not Because Of Chip Shortage

The Bowling Green, Kentucky, assembly plant that builds the popular 2021 Chevrolet Corvette will be shut down until at least June 1, the day after Memorial Day. This is just the latest delay for the sports car after a number of shut downs already this year.

General Motors released a statement saying the shutdown is tied to parts shortages but not because of the semiconductor chips shortage. “Our supply chain, manufacturing and engineering teams are working closely with our supply base to mitigate any further impact on production, and we expect the plant to resume normal operations on Tuesday, 1 June,”

While Chevrolet is not saying exactly what parts are in short supply, a commodities website is theorizing that the shortage is tied to the winter storm that hit the south in February. The storm knocked many chemical plants offline. Those plant closures could affect the production of other petroleum-based parts and supplies. The website says that petrochemicals make up more than a third of the raw material costs of an average vehicle.

Ncm Offering Exclusive Tours Of The Corvette Assembly Plant During The Ncm Bash

Its been almost two years since Corvette enthusiasts were last able to tour the Bowling Green Assembly Plant to see new Corvettes being built. The tours were shut down just before the plant underwent a three-month refurbishment that started in August 2017. So far, GM and the NCM have been vague on when tours will restart for the public but most believe that tours would resume once the C8 Corvette starts production.

The good news is that it does look like things may be progressing back to the tours restarting, at least during major events at the Museum.

An email from the NCM addressed to Lifetime and Spire Society members were sent out this morning offering the unique opportunity to take a tour of the Corvette Assembly Plant during the NCM Bash on Wednesday, April 24 Thursday, April 25th. The NCM will allow 100 VIP guests to get a sneak peek of the new plant layout as well as process improvements and efficiency changes that have been implemented. During the tour, guests will see the 7th generation Corvettes being assembled.

We at General Motors recognize that the customer is at the center of everything we do, said Kai Spande, Plant Manager. The culture of Chevrolet Corvette is based around the relationships we have with our customers. We truly value the many up-close, one-on-one communication opportunities we have to interact and solicit feedback from them.

Reopening Date Unknown For Corvette Plant

General Motors Bowling Green Assembly Plant which seemed headed for a strong rebound from last years labor strike with the rollout of the revolutionary and award-winning eighth-generation Chevrolet Corvette is again stuck in neutral, along with many manufacturers across the nation.

The plant shut down because of coronavirus concerns March 20, when GM Vice President Phil Kienle said in a message to Corvette workers: For the entire Bowling Green facility, the decision has been made to run through March 20 and then cease operations until it is decided that resuming is safe and appropriate.

After what Kienle called a deep cleaning, plant workers had expected to return to work in mid-April, but now it seems production lines will remain silent for a while longer.

Bowling Green does not currently have a return-to-work date, Plant Communications Manager Rachel Bagshaw said in an email. We are actively monitoring the situation, and when it is determined that we can safely resume regular production, we will. Safety is our overriding priority, and we continue to assess and define safeguards that will keep our employees as safe as possible when we return.

United Auto Workers Local 2164 President Jack Bowers, who helped the plants hourly workers apply for strike pay last fall, is now assisting them with applying for unemployment insurance as the latest shutdown is extended.

Corvette Plant Tours Shuttered Until 2019

However, Konken further explained that once the car was revealed, roughly half the crowd left without listening to details about engine, performance, or price. Is that a bad omen for GM? Possibly, but logistics could be a factor here. The C8 didnt take the stage until 9:30 PM local time, and most of the attendees had already spent a very long day on the road. And lest we forget, the average age for Corvette owners is 61, and thats an average. I actually saw one person climbing out of a C7 at the car show with an oxygen tank in tow, so yeah, this mass exodus could simply be chalked up to exhausted retirees ready for a good night’s sleep.

I Didn’t Speak To A Single Person Who Was Ready To Buy One Despite A Jaw

Why is that? The issue mentioned most was reliability. Nearly every person voiced concerns about GM getting all the bugs worked out, especially since this is a completely new vehicle. Some had heard the rumors about electrical problems in prototypes, but most were simply wary of jumping into a completely new mid-engined Corvette platform. Some people I spoke with expressed clear interest after a couple of years, but the majority of owners I spoke with were, well, cautiously optimistic.

I was also keen to learn if current ‘Vette owners felt a car with the engine behind the driver was really a Corvette. In general, the responses I got to this question were favorable, if vague. For the most part, people were more interested in the cars performance as opposed to engine location. Thats not to say there werent a handful of vocal detractors who want nothing to do with the C8. Actually, more people voiced displeasure about the C8 still not having round taillights than the mid-engine configuration, including the few younger Corvette owners attending the event . Are you listening to this, Chevrolet?

Will the C8 Corvette Stingray be able to bridge the age gap? To be blunt, it must if the Corvette hopes to survive. Exceptional performance and a low price will certainly help, and based on my evening with current Corvette owners in the heartland of America, there is some optimism that this could happen. Cautious optimism, anyway.
