Electrical Engineering Resume Format

The resume that landed me my entry level engineering job

A resume format determines how information in each section is presented. Therere mainly three standard resume formats:

  • The functional format/ skill-based format: Most entry-level candidates use this type of format. Information is categorized based on the relevant skills.
  • Reverse chronological format: Information is listed starting with the latest and going backward. Most popular resume format for any candidate.
  • Hybrid format: This is a mix of reverse chronological and functional formats.

For an electrical engineer, we suggest using the reverse chronological format for your experience and education sections. Thus, your experience section will start with the most recent employment and the rest will follow the chronological order.

Most hiring managers in engineering fields are interested in the candidates latest experience as the knowledge, technology, and tools used in engineering often change. By writing your recent experience first, you make the hiring managers life easy by providing them with the information they seek.

The most important part of any resume is the experience section. Recruiters and hiring managers expect to see your experience listed in reverse chronological order, meaning that you should begin with your most recent experience and then work backwards.

Don’t just list your job duties below each job entry. Instead, make sure most of your bullet points discuss impressive achievements from your past positions. Whenever you can, use numbers to contextualize your accomplishments for the hiring manager reading your resume.

It’s okay if you can’t include exact percentages or dollar figures. There’s a big difference even between saying “Managed a team of engineers” and “Managed a team of 6 engineers over a 9-month project.”

Most importantly, make sure that the experience you include is relevant to the job you’re applying for. Use the job description to ensure that each bullet point on your resume is appropriate and helpful.

What Experience Really Stands Out On Electrical Engineer Resumes

EricMiller Ph.D.

Professor and Chair, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Adjunct Professor, Computer Science, Adjunct Professor, Biomedical Engineering, Tufts University

Having been an academic my entire career, I am perhaps not the best person to be answering this question. Certainly, when looking for prospective graduate students, I like to see a resume with one or two long-term research projects culminating in some sort of archival publication. To me this type of record indicates the ability to look deeply into a problem over an extended period of time which is the type of dedication one needs for research. Though not on a resume per se, strong letters of reference are important as are grades in those undergraduate and upper-level classes most aligned with a student’s intellectual interests. Finally, I really want to see strong writing skills. Something like a paper that could get into a decent academic conference is good. Something closer to a journal article is much better. I am looking for the ability to write a clear and coherent introduction, strong discussion and exposition of the underlying problem and proposed solution, a description of the experiments, and analysis of results.Show more

You may write an objective summary highlighting your passion and interest in the company and the job role if you are in a career transition or applying for an entry-level position.

Nevertheless, this section should entice the hiring manager to read further into your resume.

    Career Objective & Professional Summary

Entry Level Electrical Engineer Resume Unique Apprentice Electrical ...

Depending on your experience level, you will want to include either a career objective or a professional summary at the top of your resume to kick things off and pique the readers interest.

    Entry-Level Objectives

Entry level candidates, or those with less than 10 years of experience, will usually want to stick with the career objective.

Candidates with 10 to 15 years or more of industry experience can consider a professional summary, which is a little bit longer than a career objective and can even contain bullet points highlighting key specialities that were developed over the course of your career.

For those of you writing a career objective, be sure to stick to only 2 to 3 sentences highlighting your key educational and internship experience, if you are a fresh graduate, or your key work experiences from your first couple of jobs.

The goal is to communicate to the employer why he should hire you and get him to read the rest of your resume, so do not overthink it too much.

    Experienced Candidates Write Summaries

For those of you writing professional summaries, know that it can be a little longer than a career objective, meaning up to three or four sentences in total.

Here you will write about your cumulative knowledge of the industry quantified by your years of experience, and even, perhaps, milestone projects you have completed.
