One of the biggest mistakes that I see teachers make is that they try to navigate this process alone. Often, they put off researching until the very last minute. Which sets them up for a very stressful application season. I want to help you get some clarity in the options available to you. To know EXACTLY what you need to do in order to get your foot in the door. You dont have to do this on your own. With the help of an HR expert with over 10 years of experience and a team of former teachers, Ive created a guide to support you in the early stages of your transition out of the classroom. Importance Of The Resume Format And Layout

Heading – Resume Objective

Your resume heading should describe the job title that you are seeking. For instance, if you are an elementary teacher, the heading of your resume should be: Elementary School Teacher or Elementary Educator.

If you are a new teacher or a career changer, your resume heading should still describe the position you are applying for. For instance, if you are a new graduate applying for a high school math position, your resume heading will read something like: High School Mathematics Teacher or Secondary Math Teacher. The position you are wishing to secure is your resume objective.

Resume Profile or Summary

A profile, which appears at the beginning of your resume, is a concise paragraph or bulleted list. This career summary should include the top qualities you can bring to the education position.

This section could be called an introductory paragraph or summary of qualifications. Resume profiles are usually five to six lines in length. Each sentence needs to reflect on either your years of experience, related skill sets, or your ability to shape a dynamic school environment.

Here is an example of a K-12 teacher’s resume profile:

Here is an example for a secondary school assistant principal:

Areas of Expertise or Core Competencies

After the profile section, many resumes will include a table or other formatting style to include an “Areas of Expertise”, “Core Competencies”, “Areas of Strength” or “Areas of Knowledge” section. Here is an example:

Teacher Resume Skills Section Example: A Varied Toolbox

The skills section is one of the shortest parts of your teacher resume. There isnt much room to elaborate. Make each bullet point count towards your shining professional teacher toolbox. The skills section is used by recruiters to evaluate how productive and versatile you will be as a teacher in both your day-to-day activities and in challenging situations. Unlike the summary, you dont have much room to be creative in this resume section. There isnt much real estate here to expand upon, so each skill needs to be carefully evaluated to determine whether it should take up precious space on your resume.

The best method to choose your most winning skills is to have a master list. This is a list that you brainstorm in a separate document. Think of any and all possible qualities and practical or social tools you might have acquired over your life and career. Then, for each teacher job application, customize your resume to include the most appropriate and relevant skills. Once again, make sure to pay special attention to the job description to not miss out on skills that the employer is looking for in a new teacher.

According to DATA USA, the most highly valued skills by employers of elementary and middle school teachers are related to these general categories:

  • Learning Strategies
  • Social Perceptiveness

For preschool teachers, the skill categories are similar but with an additional emphasis on Organizational and Monitoring skills, as young children require constant attention.

Choosing The Correct Cv Format And Resume Template

Your resume format is vitally important. Not only does the resume or CV formatting impact ATS filtering of your teacher resume, but the template visuals will affect how much attention your teacher resume receives from recruiters. Similar to the use of keywords and your summary description, your resume formatpresents a dual challenge: pass the ATS filtering and win over the hiring manager. Lets take a look at some rules for each of these goals.

For the ATS:

  • Save your resume in the PDF format, as our resume builder does.
  • Use specialized tools, templates and builders that are built with modern technologies in mind and tested in HR systems.
  • Spell out abbreviations or acronyms.

For recruiters and HR departments:

  • Make sure to include some white space between your resume sections. A resume that is completely covered in text leaves no room for the brain or eyes to rest.
  • Make sure the sections of your resume are clean, symmetrical and well-placed. An aesthetically pleasing format will make recruiters more likely to read your resume.
  • Use professional resume templatesthat have been tested and designed by experts. Make sure your template expresses your values and personality as a teacher.

Keep it simple – there is no need for your resume to be creative. Clear and concise is all that is required.

Ensure your resume is spaced out well and that it is clear and easy to read.

Write a resume that is more than two pages long. Recruiters simply don’t have the time to read pages and pages.

How To Format A Teacher Resume

Before you can educate the recruiter on your skills and experiences, you need to choose the most suitable resume format for teaching.

You see, even the best applicant needs a resume format that is easy to read and follow.

With reverse-chronological being the most common resume format, we recommend this format for teachers. It highlights your most recent work experience first, and then works back through your history and skills.

You could also try the two following formats:

  • Functional Resume – This format focuses on your skills, which makes it the best format for teachers that are highly-skilled, but have little in the way of classroom experience.
  • Combination Resume – This format mixes both Functional and Reverse-Chronological formats, which means it focuses on both your teaching skills AND teaching experience.

Stick to a one-page teacher resume. This shows that youre able to information brief and precise. Feel free to check out our one-page resume templates for inspiration.

Writing A Cover Letter For Your Resume

Every teacher career change resume needs a cover letter! Your cover letter introduces who you are and what you can offer in position X at company Y. A common mistake I see teachers make is creating a generic cover letter to send with all of their applications.

Some hiring managers may approach your application with the assumption youre willing to take any job outside of the classroom. Even if thats the truth, you dont want the hiring manager to know that. Use the cover letter and an opportunity to showcase why their job is a great fit for you and what you can bring to the table for their company. Hiring managers want someone qualified, excited about the position, and a good fit for the company culture.

Make sure every cover letter is unique to the job and company you are sending it to. Add in specifics regarding what excites you about the role and how your experience will translate into the new responsibilities. Do research about the company and address how you are equally passionate about their core values and company culture. You will learn so much from a companys website, including its mission statement and core values.

Languages In A Teachers Resume

You will always need to have qualifications and experience in the English language when it comes to teaching in the US. However, some teaching positions will require you to be fluent in other languages. If a job description specifies that you must speak a certain language, you should always provide certification evidence of this:

  • IELTS or TOEFL are both acceptable for English .
  • German proficiency certificate
  • DELF for French
