Employers may view older workers as more stable, mature, reliable, and skilled than younger workers, but that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck. You just need to learn how to properly present your strengths in a way that makes your age irrelevantor even beneficial.

Writing your first resume can seem overwhelming, especially when theres so much on the linelike paying rent and having an answer every time youre your mom calls to ask if youve found a job yet.

You dont get a second chance at a first impression and your resume is your introduction to your hopefully-soon-to-be employer. Your goal is to convince employers that they would benefit by hiring you. But dont panic. These tips will help your resume stand out from the crowd.

How Should I Format My Resume In Microsoft Word

The format you choose will depend on your experience level!

There are 3 basic resume formats to choose between:

  • âReverse-Chronological: Details your most recent job and works backwards from there. This format focuses heavily on work experience.â
  • Functional: Focuses on skills and education rather than work experience. This is a good option for recent graduates or applicants with minimal work experience.â
  • Hybrid/Combination: Combines elements of both the Reverse-Chronological and the Functional. This is a good option for applicants with gaps in their employment history.

Open Microsoft Word And Pick A Template

First, open Word and search for resume by selecting the search icon in the top right-hand corner.

This will bring up a range of options. Choose templates, which will display your choice of resume templates, and then select the one that you like best:

How To List Education On Your Resume

The next section were going to cover is your Education. Lets start with the basics – how to format the education section & what to mention there. Then, well move on to tips & tricks thatll help you stand out

  • Program Name. E.g.: B.A. in Business Administration
  • University Name. E.g.: New York State University
  • Years Attended. E.g.: 08/2008 – 06/2012
  • GPA. E.g.: 3.9 GPA
  • Honors. E.g.: Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude.
  • Academic achievements. Any interesting papers youve written, courses youve excelled in, etc.
  • Minor. Minor in Psychology

Tips on perfecting your education section:

  • If you dont have any work experience, mention your education section first.
  • Mention your latest educational entry on top.
  • If you have a university degree, dont mention your high school at all.
  • ONLY mention GPA if you had a very impressive academic career .

Collect all the information you need to include before you start writing your resume. Its much easier to write, edit, and format a document when you have all the details you need in front of you.

Before you get started, make a list of the contact information you want to use, all your jobs, your education, training, certifications, skills, and other credentials.

Tips For Formatting Resumes In Usajobs Resume Builder

You can copy and paste text from Word documents into the resume builder. However, some formatting in these documents may not work in the USAJOBS resume builder. To fix formatting errors inside your resume, you must first save the original file in a .txt format.

To copy and paste from Word:

  • Open up your Word document or other word processing tool.
  • Select the File tab at the top.
  • Go to the Save As option.
  • Choose to save it as a Plain Text file.
  • Open the new file and ensure the text appears in an acceptable format.
  • Copy and paste your resume text into the resume builder.
  • To edit your USAJOBS resume-builder resume:

  • Click on your username at the top of the page and select Documents from the menu.
  • Find the resume you want to edit and click Edit .
  • This will bring you to the first page of your resume.

    Describe Your Work Experience

    This is the meat of your resume and the part thats the most important to potential employers. If youre wondering what type of information to include in your work history section, a good way to get some ideas is to check out some resume examples for your field of expertise and years of experience.

    When crafting your document, be sure to include specific information from the job ad but only if you actually have that experience.     What Should I Leave Out

    When it comes to your CV, there are certain words and phrases you should try to avoid and they mostly consist of overused clichés.

    Not only could using them risk mildly irritating the person in charge of hiring, you could also end up blending into a sea of similar candidates.

    Start with the company name, location, job title, and your dates of employment. Like before, bold and underline the header and bold the name of the establishment .
