Cv Personal Profile: How To Write Yours

When writing your CV, there is often some confusion surrounding the CV personal profile, also called an executive summary or personal statement, and whether or not to include one. While they are not a mandatory must-have on a CV, they provide a quick overview of your abilities and suitability for a position, ideal for the busy recruiter or employer sorting through hundreds of applications.

However, writing the short personal profile at the top of a CV can prove to be quite difficult. The CV personal statement, or profile, is the first thing that will be read by potential employers and recruiters alike, so its important to take the time to create a concise yet well-written introduction to your qualifications, skills and experience.

The statement must be a brief snapshot of you as a professional. While it should only be a few lines long to summarise your CV and what you can offer the employer, it must also be unique to your skill set and tailored specifically to the role you are applying for.

Having spent over four decades working with individuals to create stand out CVs and reading through countless personal statements, we have developed top tips to help you write the perfect personal profile.

Tip : List Key Certifications

In every industry, including coaching, recruiters and hiring managers use the applicant tracking systems to screen resumes for open job positions. ATS software looks for job-specific keywords and qualifications on your resume, and will automatically discard your application if theyre not found.

Coaches will need to have a well-rounded education and specific certifications under their belt in order to succeed. Therefore, its crucial to list key certifications on your coaching resume.

What Skills Should I Put In My Cv

The skills in your CV should include skills from the adverts that interest you.

Look at this example:

“We’re looking for a conscientious self-starter, proficient in Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop, who works well with others and can learn new computer systems easily.”

The key words are:

  • proficient in Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop
  • teamwork
  • willingness to learn.

Show how you used skills

For each skill on your CV, include an example that shows how you used or developed it.

You could write:

I collected and managed money from my schools 40 Hour Famine fundraiser.

Self-starter Ran a coffee kiosk. Managed and counted the till takings, opened and closed kiosk.

Teamwork Worked with the school trustees to make decisions about school issues. I played netball on a school team for four years and was captain in Year 13.

Willingness to learn I updated my Microsoft skills through online courses.

Employers may get many job applications from people who have, for example, ‘good communications skills’ or who are ‘flexible’.

You could write:

Good communication skills Can follow instructions and ask questions when I need to. I’m confident in front of an audience. I was a member of my schools debating team, took part in school drama productions, and won a regional speech competition.

Flexibility I usually work after school, but I’ve taken on later shifts to cover staff shortages.

Many companies use an applicant tracking system , which acts as an electronic filter, to collect, scan, sort and rank resumes to narrow applicant pools to the most qualified candidates. Thats why you need to customize your resume and cover letter using keywords and phrases that match the job listing .

If an employer is looking for a graphic designer with mastery in Adobe Creative Suite, for example, you wouldnt just claim experience with software for creative professionals. List the software by name, give your expertise level, and if you have it highlight your Adobe Certified Expert certification. Likewise, if an employer is searching for an accountant with experience processing daily invoices and credit, then use similar language in your resume. Simply listing gathering receipts as a duty wont likely score well with an ATS.

Repeat common words and phrases from other postings of the same role, too. But remember, every job description is different. Tailor the keywords and skills on your resume and in your cover letter for each position.

Understand The Four Elements Of The Star Formula

Here is a breakdown of each step of the STAR formula:

Situation

This step gives you a canvas to set the story around a challenge you faced. However, you’ll need to include other elements of the STAR formula to have a clear and concise overview of your experience. Employers want to know the toughest challenge you’ve encountered in the face of adversity.

Task

Note what your role was in this challenge. Remember, you should keep this part short so you can put more emphasis on the result of the project you worked on.

Action

Detail how you overcame this challenge by making it clear if it was a team effort or an individual endeavor. Highlight what actions you took to cause the desired result.

Result

List metrics associated with your success and provide examples about what you did to affect the outcome.

Third Provide Clear Examples

For each work experience description you list in your resume, you should provide clear examples of how you succeeded in your role. For example, maybe you were voted server of the month for your exceptional ability to create customer relationships. Or maybe you increased your past companys customer base by succeeding as a brand ambassador. If you have an example of how you can benefit the employer youre applying to, consider including it in your job description.

Match Your Resume Content With The Job Description

Now that you understand a bit about what the company wants, look at your resume.

You want to tailor your resume to the job description, starting by matching the most important things on the job description with the most visible areas on your resume.

Make the first few bullet points under each previous job on your resume be as relevant as possible. Your resume employment history is one of the first places recruiters and hiring managers look, so its one of the most important areas to tailor!

If youre looking for your first job, you can tailor your education and other related experience instead. Same concept.

If the job description emphasized leadership, dont talk about all your individual accomplishments first. Instead, put a bullet point that mentions any leading youve done taking the lead on projects, training, supervising others. No matter how small, find a way to demonstrate leadership!

Then you can list your individual accomplishments.

Maybe the individual part was 90% of your last role, and leadership was only 10%. It doesnt matter, mention the leadership first, just like the job description did.

If you have multiple positions on your resume, tailor all of them.

If you have an objective or summary section in your resume, tailor that too! Look at how the company describes the overall role and match your summary with that description.

Common Sense Is The Best Judge Of What Belongs In Your Resumeusing It Will Help You Keep Your Resume To The Point

What should a resume include?

If you’re in the middle of updating or writing your resume, you may be asking yourself any of these questions: How long should my resume be? How can I fit all my experience on one page? What should a resume include?

If you are, you’re not alone. As millions of workers update their resumes, one of the top concerns is resume length. Not long ago, job seekers followed the resume golden rule: No resume should exceed one page. However, today’s job seekers are finding that rule no longer applies.

In this time of confusion, the solution is simple: common sense. If you are just graduating, have fewer than five years of work experience or are contemplating a complete career change, a one-page resume will probably suffice.

Some technical and executive candidates require multiple-page resumes. If you have more than five years of experience and a track record of accomplishments, you will need at least two pages to tell your story.
