When Not To Use A Professional Development Section

If there are certain certifications or training programs that are required for the position, then you should give it a separate section and label it accordingly. This way the hiring manager can easily spot what they’re looking for. It might be hard to catch if it’s buried somewhere with your other professional development you have listed.

We wrote a good post here on including certifications on a resume.

You should also only add this section if you have relevant information to add. A CPR certification won’t do you any good for you’re applying for an accounting position. Make sure that the information you include helps show why you’re a good match for that particular position.

    Closing Thoughts

A professional development section can really help you stand out from the competition. Showing relevant continuing education, training and other professional development will give you leg up on the other candidates.

Good luck with your job search!

Dont Include Any Courses That Could Be Considered Beginning

Skip any courses that might present you as a novice in that skill area. So, if you took a course introducing students to PowerPoint, for example, you can leave it off your resume.

Its inclusion would mark you as a beginner and detract from your other areas of expertise. In short, only include courses that enhance your credibility as an expert in your field.

Add A Special Section To Your Resume

How to List Education on a Resume: Section Examples & Tips

In some cases, you can add online courses youve completed to the Education section of your resume. However, that approach is only recommended if:

    • Its a highly recognized program or instructor in your industry.
    • That skill or course is a formal requirement within your career field.
    • The course resulted in a tangible qualificationsuch as a certification or other designation.

But where exactly should these courses go on your resume?

Consider adding a dedicated section to it. You could call it Professional Development,Additional Training or something similar.

With this method, you call attention to all of the valuable skills you didnt learn in college without pushing them directly into the spotlight. In most cases, your formal education and professional experience still deserve the majority of your resume real estate.

Decide Whether To Make It Its Own Section Or Add It To Your Education Section

There are a few different ways you can display your professional development experiences. If you have a range of professional development experiences, you can make a separate section for them. However, you can also add your professional development information to your education section. This helps if you want to keep your resume short or if you if you only have a few experiences you want to mention.

For example, you presented your undergraduate research project at a conference, completed a training course in business communication and participated in a summer internship program abroad. These are resume-worthy accomplishments, but they don’t require their own section unless you want to discuss them in-depth. Therefore, in this situation, you can incorporate these experiences into your education section.

How To List College Education On Your Resume

How you include education on your resume depends on when or if you have graduated. To Demonstrate Industry Experience

Many certifications are only awarded to individuals who have worked a certain number of years as a professional. Listing your certifications can be an efficient way to verify your experience level.

    Whats Your Job Target

How to Create a List of Professional References

The next thing you need to think about is the type of job you want your resume to target. If your only professional experience with the job function or industry is through your education, its a good idea to list some of your classes. Again, you want to check that the classes are both relevant and recent.

Some positions have educational requirements where everyone has basically the same educational background. Others may have few educational requirements at all. If you have a BA or higher education and youre applying for jobs that only require an AA or a high school diploma, your college coursework is probably not relevant.

Before you decide to include any relevant coursework on a resume, you need to ask yourself whether it bolsters your qualifications for the job you want to land. In general, work experience, internships, and volunteer work are more compelling than education experience. If you have hands-on experience, you dont need to include your education: its redundant.

    Focus On Relevant Coursework

When deciding whether to include online courses on your resume, you must first determine their relevance. You may need to edit your list depending on the jobs you are applying to and their responsibilities. For example, if you apply to a software engineer position, an online cryptography certification would fit on your list. However, you likely do not need to include an online course you took about social psychology.

You also do not need to list introductory coursework on a topic if you have received higher certification on that topic. Sometimes, introductory courses may make you appear less experienced because it seems that you solely have foundational knowledge. Hiring managers will be more impressed to see you taking more advanced online coursework or receiving higher-level certifications.

How To Write A Cv Sample

A curriculum vitae, or CV, is an outline of your professional and educational experience. A CV differs from a resume in that it is required for positions in the academic field. While a resume is usually only a page long, a CV provides more detailed information on academic experience and accolades and can be longer, and positions overseas typically require a CV instead of a resume.

Open up your word processor and select a standard font such as Arial or Times New Roman. Type a centered header at the top of the page, making sure to include your full name, mailing address, phone number and email address.

Skip two lines and change the page alignment to the left side of the page. Type “Objective”, skip another line and tab in. Type a brief statement outlining the type of position you are seeking.

Move your cursor down two more lines and type “Education.” Skip a line, tab in and type a chronological list of your educational experiences and accolades beginning with the most recent. A CV is geared towards academic jobs and should include details like institution names, locations, dates attended, field of study, awards and accolades and degree or certificate earned.

Skip down two more lines and type “Practica” along the left side of the page. Type a chronological list of your professional experience as you did in step 3. Only include experience related in some way to the position you are applying for.
