Look up the company and greater industry on LinkedIn, and see how the people whose careers you covet present themselves: what can you learn from them?

Help The Robots Read It

The robot will see you now. Okay, thats a bit of an exaggeration. Your first phone interview and IRL interview will be with a full-fledged human …but before getting to that step, you have to get past the robots who read your resume when you apply online.

What we mean by that is that most online job applications use software that scans resumes to help recruiters who are searching for specific candidates.

Isaacs shares two all-star strategies for impressing the robots and their human counterparts. The first is to use standard fonts and simple formatting because the robots cant read the fancy stuff.

The second is to use the exact words and phrases from the job description, because the robots and hiring managers can filter through all the applications by searching for relevant terms. Review job ads for your desired position, and look for skills and qualifications that employers want in their ideal candidates, says Isaacs. “If you have matching qualifications, find ways to weave those keywords and terms into your resume.” Lets say the ad says the job requires someone who understands SEO and can work well in a fast-paced, deadline-driven workplace. Use those exact phrases in your resume.

Highlight Something You Have Been Committed To

For example, if you have a hobby that you have done for ten years, include that. Many people job hop frequently or dont know how to land a job for a lack of experience.

It helps to show that you are committed to something and it helps to round you out as a person. I love it when students are members of trade associations. It says a great deal about their serious interest in the industry.

Tips For Writing Your Entry

Due to the general nature of entry-level candidates having little to no work experience, the content and layout of these types of resumes is key to attracting potential employers.

Check out the following guide to find some tips and tricks of the trade for writing entry-level resumes:

The hardest thing about writing an entry-level resume is deciding what the goal is which direction the applicant wants to go in. Once that is clear, the rest will practically write itself.

If you need help figuring this out, try answering the following questions to get a clearer idea of the target audience for your resume:

  • What work or projects have I done in the past that motivate me?
  • In which field or profession can I see myself in 10 years?
  • What skills do I have that can be applied to an occupation?

With the objective in mind, the candidate can start by choosing which format is best for an entry-level resume and specifically the ideal resume structure for each position or company they apply to.

TOP TIP: Use the job description as a guide to find the best keywords for each vacancy

Remember, if youre not sure of how to write an entry-level resume from scratch, you can either choose from a selection of entry-level resume templates to help or even use an online resume builder as a guide.

First Time Job Resume Inspirational Make First Time ...

Even with zero or little experience, you can still write a killer first resume.

Youre staring at a blank page willing it to become a resume. You get up, get coffee, sit back down, type your name, but then youre tempted to take a break because you have no clue how to make a resume for your first job and turn your work experience into something that will entice someone to hire you.

It’s true that many employers prefer to hire workers with a demonstrated track record of success rather than someone who’s young and inexperienced. Employers may view older workers as more stable, mature, reliable, and skilled than younger workers, but that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck. You just need to learn how to properly present your strengths in a way that makes your age irrelevantor even beneficial.

Writing your first resume can seem overwhelming, especially when theres so much on the linelike paying rent and having an answer every time youre your mom calls to ask if youve found a job yet.

You dont get a second chance at a first impression and your resume is your introduction to your hopefully-soon-to-be employer. Your goal is to convince employers that they would benefit by hiring you. But dont panic. These tips will help your resume stand out from the crowd.

Writing Your First Resume

To get started, review information on the different parts of a resume and what is included in each element. It’s a good idea to review high school resume examples to get an idea of what is appropriate. Even if you’ve never held a formal job, you still have important life experience that’s applicable to the job search.

Don’t forget to look at volunteer work, civic groups, and youth organizations . The skills you have developed doing these things have given you valuable experience that will impress employers.

The bottom line is that you actually have a lot more experience than you think you have.

Writing your first resume can seem intimidating, but if you take it step-by-step, you will be able to put together a document that will highlight your abilities and show the hiring manager that youre worth calling for an interview.

Start Big With Your Rough Draft

And then scale it back using the first draft as a brainstorming opportunity to put down everything youve done. Include the stuff you may not have been paid for including volunteer work, helping out that neighbor down the street with the software issues, etc.

Plot it all down. Dont leave out anything. Duplicates are fine at this point. You can whittle it down or edit it out later.

List The Various Skills And Capabilities You Possess

This can really take some thought because you might not think of a lot off the top of your head. FYI, asking others who know you to assist is very helpful.

For example, having your family and/or friends give you their opinions about what skills and capabilities they think you have or are good at would be. This gives you a sense of how other people see you.

Mixing your own view of yourself with an outsiders view of you can be very helpful here.

They might see something you miss or feel youre not that good with but they feel you are. Now with this section, you want to make it easy to read. So I highly recommend you use bullets to draw attention to things. This makes it very easy on the eyes and helps separate each item out from the rest.

Your ultimate goal is to fill the page as best as you can.

One strategy Ive used and recommended to others is this. So instead of having to say a 1/2 page resume, youll have a full page. Thus, take advantage of customizing the formatting to accommodate this.

Keep this section bolded and centered. This helps separate it out from the text. So making your section headings different from the text helps better focus the readers eyes. Some people will underline the section heading, which is perfectly acceptable. You can also bold and underline it if youd like.

Make the visual look consistent.

So consistency is a good thing and something you want to prominently display throughout your resume.

Make It Look Professional

Writing Your First Resume

For easy reading, stick to these guidelines:

  • For your font, choose either Helvetica, Calibri or Cambria.
  • Make your font size between 12 to 14.
  • Appropriate spacing / white space for readability.
  • No more than six bullet points when highlighting experience, education and skills.
  • at 1 all around.
  • Left aligned format .

Recruiters review hundreds of resumes in a shot. Remember, theyre your target audience. Keep their needs in mind and make your resume an easy read.

Put The Resume To Work

The final and most important step is to make sure that you put this resume to work. It is not enough to simply build the resume for a remote job search. You need to use it to apply to jobs. Right now, many companies are posting more positions that are identified as “remote” or “fully remote.” You can also use a number of filters on most job boards to find these roles.

But, there are many more jobs out there where the job isn’t identified as remote. Instead, this is a negotiation point for the person that gets the job. Most employers have moved a number of jobs to remote or hybrid models since the COVID-19 pandemic began. The future of the remote nature of these roles isn’t totally clear for anyone at this point. But, people have proven that the roles can be done remotely and companies are willing to let people work in them that will be remote or in a hybrid arrangement. So, make sure that you are using your resume that is built for a remote job search for jobs that are marked as remote AND for jobs that can be negotiated as remote or hybrid.
