Daytona 500 Postponed For First Time Ever Race Set For 9 Am Monday

The Daytona 500 has been postponed for the first time in its 54-year history.
NASCAR postponed The Great American Race after heavy rain saturated Daytona International Speedway on Sunday.
Officials spent more than four hours waiting for a window to dry the famed track, but it never came. And when the latest storm cell passed over the speedway, they had little choice but to call it a day and reschedule.
The 500-mile race was rescheduled for noon Monday EST. It will be aired on Fox.
“This is one of the toughest things for us drivers,” pole-sitter Carl Edwards said. “Its now who can really stay focused. Thats not just the drivers, thats the pit crews, the crew chiefs, everyone, the officials. But I think well be just fine.”
But Monday may be another test for both drivers and fans.
The forecast calls for more rain, and officials are prepared to wait all day and into the night to avoid a Tuesday race.
Eight previous Daytona 500s have endured rain delays, the latest in 2009. But never before had storms forced NASCARs premier event to be moved.

The Daytona 500 resumed Sunday night at Daytona International Speedway following a lengthy delay for inclement weather.
The red flag period was lifted at 9:08 p.m. ET. It lasted for five hours, 40 minutes, and 28 seconds.
Prior to the red flag, a 16-car crash ensued on Lap 14 of 200. As the field went down the backstretch heading into Turn 3, contact from behind by Christopher Bell sent Aric Almirola spinning into Alex Bowman as they were racing for second place behind leader Kevin Harvick.
Shortly after the crash, lightning within an 8-mile radius of the track halted the race at 3:28 p.m. ET. Rain began about 3:45 p.m.
The crash collected Ryan Newman, , Ryan Blaney, William Byron, Daniel Suarez, Matt DiBenedetto, and Tyler Reddick, among others.
At the time of the red flag, six drivers involved in the crash were confirmed out of the race: Almirola, Bowman, Suarez, Newman, Erik Jones, and David Ragan.
Shortly after the end of the red flag, several other drivers involved in the crash including DiBenedetto, Chris Buescher, and rookie Anthony Alfredo officially fell out of the race.
Said Bowman: It looks like kind of got turned sideways there and I was the guy that got ran into. Hats off to everybody at Hendrick Motorsports they built some really fast race cars. Hate that superspeedway racing works out that way sometimes, but thats just part of the game.
Daytona 500 Rain Delay Updates: What Happens In A Rain Delay

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. As the 2021 Daytona 500 was in a rain delay, the race cars sat covered on pit road at Daytona International Speedway.
Shortly after 9:30 p.m. ET, it was time to get back to racing.
While frustrating, a rain delay is something NASCAR teams are well-versed in handling, although fans always have questions.
NASCARs policy is that it wont start a race without a plan to get to the advertised distance. In the case of inclement weather, though, officials can shoot for getting to the halfway point once a race starts to make the results official. For Daytona, that would be 100 laps.
But the Daytona 500 is an event NASCAR likely wants to have run the full 200 laps. With three hours of racing time still needed after drivers completed just 15 laps Sunday, officials aimed to resume by 10 p.m. ET Sunday night NASCAR typically doesnt race much later than 1 a.m., although previous races at Daytona have stretched that deep into the night.
Track drying can depend on wind, cloud cover and humidity, as well as two potential additional problems: water coming out from underneath the SAFER Barriers on the outside wall and water seeping up from seams in the asphalt, often called “weepers.”
A 2.5-mile track such as Daytona generally takes anywhere from 90 to 180 minutes to dry. NASCAR has 19 of its “air titan” track-drying trucks on site, and those blow water off the track.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. The Daytona 500 has resumed after a weather delay that lasted more than five hours and prompted several drivers to make fast-food runs outside the track.
Kevin Harvick was out front when the race restarted under caution with 185 laps remaining.
NASCAR’s signature event was halted after 15 laps because of lightning and then heavy rain. Sixteen cars were involved in a huge crash just one lap before the stoppage.
With radar showing a lengthy delay, at least three drivers hit the road to grab some grub.
Drivers Chase Briscoe, Ross Chastain and Tyler Reddick used the red flag to refuel, giving new meaning to fast food. The drivers left the track and made quick trips across the street to grab some grub.
Briscoe posted a picture on social media of him wearing his firesuit in the drive-thru at Panda Express. Chastain posted a pic of him in the drive-thru at McDonald’s, a sponsor. Reddick sat down inside Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, also a sponsor, and ate some chicken pot pie.

Massive Wreck At Daytona 500 Affects 16 Drivers Race Delayed After 15 Laps
Shortly after a huge wreck Sunday at the Daytona 500, the 63rd annual Great American Race was delayed because of heavy local rains.
For the Daytona 500, which is NASCAR’s first and biggest race every season, it’s usually not a matter “if” a big wreck will happen, but “when” it will happen.
Last year, it happened on the final lap of the race when Ryan Newman’s car flipped and turned into a fireball on the track. This year, the big one happened on the 15th lap, and it involved 16 drivers. There were no reported injuries.
The first big wreck of the day happened on the 15th lap when the front bumper of Christopher Bell’s No. 20 car got underneath the back end of Aric Almirola’s No. 10 car, sending Almirola’s car across the track into the wall. Bell’s car was actually pushed from behind on a bump draft by Kyle Busch’s 18 car.
These drivers were affected by the massive wreck: Ryan Blaney, Chris Buescher, Tyler Reddick, Anthony Alfredo, Aric Almirola, Alex Bowman, Daniel Suarez, Kurt Busch, David Ragan, Ryan Newman, Matt DiBenedetto, Erik Jones, Martin Truex Jr., William Byron and Jamie McMurray.

While crews began cleaning up the mess, two lightning strikes were detected within three miles of the track, sending the race into a red flag during the 15th lap.
Last year’s Daytona 500 was won by Denny Hamlin, who claimed his third checkered flag in this race. Hamlin started in the 25th starting spot this year.

Nascar Targeting 9 Pm Restart For Daytona 500 As Track Drying Continues
For the second year in a row, the Daytona 500 has been a start-and-stop affair thanks to the unwelcome meddling of Mother Nature. After rain stopped the race in the early laps in 2020 and forced a postponement to Monday afternoon, the 2021 Daytona 500 was halted after 15 laps due to a storm in the area – Hopefully this time, with a different outcome.
As of Sunday evening, that it is currently aiming for a 9 PM EST restart to the Daytona 500 on FOX, as track drying efforts in order to resume the race. NASCAR states that drivers will be called to their cars at 8:45 PM EST.
Track drying equipment is currently on the Speedway, and radar in the Daytona Beach area offers a more optimistic prognosis than it did earlier in the day – Though the conclusion of the race on Sunday night remains very much at the mercy of storms in the area breaking up and avoiding the 2.5-mile oval.
15 of 200 laps are currently complete, with Kevin Harvick leading the way from Christopher Bell, Austin Dillon, Kyle Busch, and Chase Elliott.
Seems like if it doesnt rain again, this race will resume. Still an if but more promising now than 30 minutes ago.

Daytona 500 Resumes After Lengthy Delay
First there was the Big Wreck, then came the Big Rain, twin calamities that visited Sundays Daytona 500, turning NASCARs premier race into a used car lot.
Just 15 laps 37 miles into The Great American Race, the rain began to fall on a field already under caution for a wreck that had caught up 16 cars, nearly a third of the 40-car field. The race was under a weather delay for nearly six hours before it re-started after 9 p.m. Sunday.
The weather curse continues. Last years race was so rain-sodden that it required a Monday finish, whereupon Denny Hamlin won his second straight 500 to greatly reduced fanfare.
On that Monday, Ryan Newman was bumped from the lead and sent horrifically airborne in a fiery last-lap crash. Returning to the scene this year, Newman got his wreck out of the way early and was thankfully spared the trip to the hospital. On Turn 3 of Lap 15, Aric Almirola, running near the front, was sent sideways. That meant big trouble for a tightly packed field.
The unluckiest of the spinning cars plowed into the muddy Daytona infield. It all happened just in front of Dawsonvilles Chase Elliott, but the defending Cup champion dove low on the track and was able to avoid entanglement. In all, 16 other cars which notably included those rides belonging to Kurt Busch, Jamie McMurray, Martin Truex Jr. and Newman were not so fortunate. Newman was listed as one of six drivers out of the field, with the others waiting to test their damaged cars.

Lightning Downpour Stop Race As Huge Wreck Takes Out 16 Drivers
Moments after a massive wreck wreaked havoc on the field, knocking out 16 cars in the 40-car field, the race was halted because of a lightning strike in the Daytona area.
Ryan Newman was among those whose race ended after 15 laps when Aric Almirola got sideways after being bumped by Christopher Bell. Almirola spun sideways and took out Kurt Busch, Tyler Reddick, Ryan Blaney, Chris Buescher, Martin Truex Jr., Matt DiBenedetto, William Byron, David Ragan, Anthony Alfredo, Erik Jones, Alex Bowman, Jamie McMurray, Daniel Suarez as well as Newman, Bell, and Almirola. Byrons car nearly flipped.
It isnt clear how many cars might be able to continue. Byron, Truex, McMurray and Busch drove back to pit road, according to Fox Sports Bob Pockrass, but teams cannot work on the cars with the race under a red flag. Theyll be on a six-minute clock when the race resumes.
We were just getting pushed too early. Its a long, long race, Almirola said while drivers headed for cover under the red flag. Man, we were in a five position, just sitting there riding around in the top two, three and the 20 just came with a big run and hit me really hard in a bad spot and it turned me to the right and tore up our race car and ended our Daytona 500 way too early.
None of the drivers was injured in the crash, but the rain that followed the lightning left them and those who were still in the race with time to express their feelings about the crash.
