When will mail, package delivery resume?

UDPATE 5:10 p.m.

Canada Post has confirmed it suspended delivery in the Okanagan on Tuesday.

“Delivery will resume once it is deemed safe to do so,” the Crown corporation said, adding “the safety of our employees is our number one priority.”

Elsewhere in the B.C. Interior, red service alerts were put in place in Castlegar and Trail, suspending service.

A yellow service alert was put in place for Kamloops, Cranbrook, Kimberly, Nelson and Vernon meaning there may be service delays but Canada Post will still attempt to deliver.

ORIGINAL 1:55 p.m.

Canada Post appears to have suspended delivery in much of central and southern B.C. for the second day in a row due to poor air quality coming from forest fire smoke in the western United States.

On Monday, the crown corporation tweeted out that they were suspending service at 1:27 p.m.

So far Tuesday there has been no mail delivery at the Towne Centre Post Office on Bernard Ave. in Kelowna and many businesses in the downtown area of Kelowna have not received any mail from Canada Post.

One tweet on Monday indicated the service will resume once conditions are deemed safe: “…We are suspending delivery for the day and not sending our delivery agents out as conditions have made it unsafe.”

According to the B.C. government’s Air Quality Health Index, air quality on the south coast is at 10+, or very high, as is the air quality in the Okanagan.

How To Restart Mail Service

If you asked the U.S. Postal Service to hold your mail because you were going out of town, delivery of your mail would restart on the end date of your hold request. This happens automatically, meaning no additional action is needed on your part. For example, if you asked the USPS to hold your mail for 15 days starting June 1st, your mail delivery would automatically resume on your end date — June 16th — with the delivery of both new mail and the mail accumulated during the hold period.

Mail Service To Resume Regular Operations As Mercury Clean

Mail delivery to the Tyler area is expected to return to normal after the United States Postal Service got the go-ahead from the Environmental Protection Agency and USPS safety officials to return to regular daily operations.

The Dallas Morning News reported that mail delivery was delayed due to a mercury spill at the North Texas Processing and Distribution Center in Coppell, a city outside Dallas.

The distribution center is responsible for processing mail intended for Tyler and other East Texas cities.

Twitter:

Mail service was expected to resume regular operations at a Dallas-area postal sorting facility Monday after a mercury spill last week caused disruptions that led to mail delays in the Tyler area.

The Dallas Morning News reported about 4 gallons of mercury spilled at the North Texas Processing and Distribution Center Aug. 7 in Coppell.

That facility sorts mail headed to the Tyler area.

Hazmat teams contained the spill, but the center was closed and its operations were sent to other facilities in the immediate aftermath.

A spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service did not specify to the Morning News why the mercury was at the center, but described it as part of a “mailed package.”

No one was injured in the incident.

Because of the extra burdens placed on other distribution centers as a result of the spill, some packages might take longer to deliver, the postal service said in a written statement to the Morning News.
