Other Opinions On Including Your Address

Do Not Put Your Home Address On Your Resume! says Rick Gillis

Some career experts recommend including your full address and zip code for many different reasons. One common reason is that some companies may favor hiring someone who has a shorter commute time, so if youâre close by you should say so.

In our opinion, you shouldnât put your full street address on a resume for this reason. Including your city, state, and zip code which will pretty much give away your commute time anyway, without giving up too much other information in the process.

Should Remote Applicants Include Their Locations On Their Resumes

One of the big benefits of working remotely is that you can do it from anywhere. Perhaps youre traveling the world or living in a rural area far from an office center. As long as you have the right tech, youre good to go. So is there really a need to include your location on your resume?

Maybe. Many employers want to know which timezone youre in to ensure your working hours are compatible with theirs. Including your city and state could qualify you as timezone-compatible and help you in the recruiting process.

It is worth noting that some remote workers dont like to disclose their locations because theyre concerned employers, as , will want to adjust pay to the cost-of-living in their areas.

In this case, including your location on your resume is a personal decision, but do consider that youll be asked where youre located during the interview process, anyway. Overall, it seems including your city and state on your resume can do more good than harm.

Moving into sales in IT, Adam included a general location when applying to Software AG. This showed the recruiter he was within vicinity of their offices and that his commute would be minimal much like in Ramseys case.

Traditionally, including an address on a resume was standard practice as physical mail was the main way employers would respond after a submitted application. Today, most communication about the hiring process takes place online. As a result, including a full address is not always necessary.

  • c. Description of role and achievement

  • Education

  • Optional

  • Additionally, your physical address may be a piece of information you want to keep private until youve established a relationship with an employer. In this case, its often acceptable to leave your full address off your resume.

What About Remote Jobs Does Your Location Still Matter

When applying to fully remote positions, you might think that where you live doesnt matter. However, Companies want to know where you intend on working from, Liou says, for a number of reasons. Even if youre not working in an office, the company may only legally be able to have employees in certain countries or states for tax and other reasons. Some companies also prefer employees to be in certain time zones to align with their work hours. Ideally, these requirements would be in the job description, but thats not always the case.

Dont leave your location off your resume in hopes the company wont find out. Before youre hired, any reputable company will verify your address and eligibility to workpossibly by requiring a notary or other authorized individual to view your documents. Even if you get through the hiring process, you cant omit your address from a tax form, which youll need to fill out in order to get paid!

Above all else, definitely dont lie about your location, Liou says. You can be terminated or have a job offer revoked for lying.

How To Address A Cover Letter To A Recruiter

As we already mentioned, the way you address your cover letter is important because it is the very first thing recruiters see upon opening your cover letter.

A well-formulated cover letter address means that you care enough to research the company and that you show attention to detail.

As such, you should always put some research into who youre addressing your cover letter to and do so in a formal way.

And yes, the formal part is important too. The recruiter isnt your best friend – you want to maintain a sense of professionalism.

If this is how you address the recruiter in your cover letter:

    Incorrect Examples

    • Whats up Hiring Manager

Now, youre probably wondering, how can I find out whom to address my cover letter to?

Thats what were about to teach you:

Why You Should Include Your Address On Your Cv

    1. You are following convention

The top part of your CV is reserved for your personal details including name and contact details. Writing your home address in this section is a widespread and standard practice that has been happening since the invention of CVs and resumes. Why break with convention? Why make your CV stand out for not having an address? Sometimes, its best to stick to conventions particularly when your job or livelihoods are at stake.

    2. Your distance to work may benefit your application

If you live locally to the job you are applying for, including your address on your CV may add some additional value to your application as some employers give preference to local applicants over those that commute long distances to work.

Ideally, it shouldnt matter whether you are commuting for half an hour or one and a half hours as long as you get to work on time and fulfil your duties, its all good. However, we do not live in an ideal world and sometimes personal preferences, biases and judgements affect our decision making.

    3. Trust factor

Having an address on a CV can be an excellent trust factor.

It shows to the prospective employer that you have a permanent place , you do not have something to hide by omitting it, and that you follow a standard CV writing convention which is adopted by the vast majority of applicants.

Applying For Jobs Out Of State This Resume Tip Can Help

Do You Need To Put Your Address On A Resume
    • /

Your resume is extremely important in finding a job and is the biggest factor in whether you get the interview or not. Living in one state and applying for jobs out of state makes it even more vital.

And one of the biggest hurdles is how to list your location on your resume when applying for jobs in a different state.

A question on this topic was emailed to me by a reader last week:

Hi Biron. Im living in San Francisco and trying to move to Denver. The problem Im running into is that Im not receiving any interviews and Im guessing its because there are local applicants that are equally qualified. I believe I can interview better than them and prove myself but I need to get into the interviews. My address and phone number on my resume are a dead giveaway that Im living in the Bay Area. Do you recommend that I lie on my resume to get a job interview?

The Resume Trick That Can Help You Get Your Foot In The Door

Given that most recruiters and major companies use applicant tracking software to sift through candidates, Thompson says that not including your location on your resume makes the ATS more likely to skip over you altogether. That doesnt mean you have to take yourself out of the running, though for applicants open to relocating, including an objective statement outlining a willingness to move, accompanied by the citys ZIP code, can make all the difference.

To make things even clearer, Thompson recommends including a specific move date to clear up any worry on the hiring managers side. And of course, put them way up at the top to grab the recruiters attention.

As she tells it, something to the tune of, moving to XYZ area effective XYZ date, is key. Specific phrases like, willing to relocate, can also help applicants get flagged by ATS software, though Thompson says it doesnt always solve the ZIP code search issue with companies or outside recruiters. For the most part, its best practice to include the ZIP code of the city youre looking to wind up in somewhere on the resume.

What To Do When Youre Relocating

If youre planning on relocating to the area near the job youre applying for, its a good idea to include this information on your resume.

Where youd normally add your address, you simply have to state something like, Relocating to New York City, New York. It is even more helpful to also share when youre planning to arrive by saying, Relocating to Sacramento, California, May 2021.

You can also put these details in your cover letter, but its a good idea to add something to your resume to help you get past the initial screening process.

If you are planning to relocate and leave off your address completely, your work history will reveal that you dont live nearby, which can result in employers tossing out your application before you get a chance to explain that youre planning to move.

Then again, theres one more thing you can do.

Make a new resume and get more interviews.

Who Should You Ask To Be A Reference

Most companies will ask for two or three references from a candidate, so its always best to have at least three ready to go. Some prospective employers may request a certain mix of types of references, but generally you want to list former managers and former or current colleagues if youre earlier in your career and dont have many former managers, you could list professors you worked closely with. If youd be leading a team, you may be asked for a reference from a former direct report. For some client-facing roles, like account management, companies might want to hear from a former client or customer, so be sure to read up on the norms for your industry.

What If You Dont Live Near The Company

Resume Tips: How to Write a Resume that Stands Out

If youre applying from outside of the area, but are open to relocating, Liou still recommends including the city and state of the company on your resume, along with Relocating to or similar language.

Leaving off your location completely in this case is risky since recruiters will be able to get an idea of where you live regardless. If we look at their education and last workplace to notice they are out of state it might raise suspicion, Liou says. Not having any location listed can be a red flag for recruiters because they dont know whether an applicant realizes the job is not in their area or if theyre willing to relocate, Liou says. These objections can be eliminated by putting that statement right at the top. Without any location on your resume, you may also get left out of any ATS searches the recruiter or hiring manager might use to narrow down the pool.

If youre not looking to relocate and want to see if the job can be done remotely, you should be up front about it in your cover letter.

What Information To Include On Your Reference Sheet

On your reference sheet, you should list each reference with the following information:

    • Name
    • Phone Number
    • Email Address
    • Reference Description: Write one sentence explaining how you know or have worked with this person, where, when, and for how long.

Theres no need to include your references home or work addresscompanies arent going to be mailing them anything. And if a reference expresses a strong preference for a certain method of contact, its OK to put next to that line on your reference list.

To keep things easy for the hiring manager, its also a good idea to include your own name, phone number, and email at the top of the sheet .

    Embedded Charts And Images

While these design elements may look nice to the human eye, resumes with embedded images become a garbled mess, or get completely omitted from your application, after they pass through ATS. In addition, recruiters don’t want to see a pictorial and rather subjective representation of your skills like the second resume I review in this video. Save your creativity for your online portfolio and don’t include images in your resume.

When You Cant Find The Companys Address

Some companies might have several addresses listed , or even none at all.

Since an application that doesnt have an address line could end up lost or misplaced, make sure you do one of the following before skipping the companys address completely:

    • Check all your resources, to find the companys address.
    • Use the companys headquarter address. This is sometimes easier to find, especially if the company has several branches.
    • Use the P.O. Box number for the company. This is not as specific as an actual address line, but if all else fails, its still something.

Frequently, youll be asked to submit your job application electronically, or by email. In those cases, you can skip the address line altogether.

Heres how youd go about addressing a cover letter in an email.

Why Would A Relocation Be A Problem For Employers

What are some Skills to Put On Your Resume format 45 ...

Before you even begin to mention relocation on your resume, remember that many employers are reluctant to hire out-of-state candidates. There are many reasons for this, but they all typically boil down to one thing: the companyâs time and expense. There are often increased costs associated with hiring candidates from out-of-state. In many instances, local candidates are typically available to begin work shortly after being hired. That isnât always the case when candidates live in another state.

Some employers also view relocation as a risk for everyone involved. After all, what happens if your move to their city doesnât work out as you planned? Will you become a flight risk and have to move again–forcing the company to go through the hiring process all over again? You need to address these concerns if you expect to land an interview and eventual job.
