How To List Education On A Resume In 2021

How to list in-progress Education on Your Resume | Resume Tips

Not sure what degree to list? If you should include a GPA? It just so happens that there’s a variety of ways to effectively list your eduction.

The education section of a resume may not always be the star of the document but knowing how to properly list your education can be essential for advancing into the next phase of the hiring process.

In this guide, we will cover all the ins and outs of crafting an education section for your resume.

We’ll cover the following:

What To Include In Your Resume Education Section

Keeping in mind the points mentioned above, here’s what to include in the education section of a resume when you apply for a job. These requirements aren’t set in stone but give a general idea of what your education section should look like. This educational experience is often presented in this order to reflect what hiring managers are looking for when scanning education on a resume:

  • Name of your most recent degree: Bachelor of Science with a Minor in Politics. Listing your Minor is optional.â
  • Name of your school/college:Ohio State University. Include the location even if the name of the school or college seems obvious.â
  • Years attended: 2018 – 2021. If you have not yet finished your course, you can write 2018 – present.
  • GPA: 3.69. As stated in the previous section, if your GPA is not extremely impressive, or if you have lots of other experience, best to leave this out.
  • Honors: Magna Cum Laude. This is also an optional section.
  • Any other courses, activities or achievements that are relevant to the job: 1-year exchange program in Gothenburg, Sweden. Exchange programs show your willingness to engage with new experiences and take on challenges that may be out of your comfort zone.

Education In Progress Resume Examples

When you include details indicating that youâre currently pursuing a degree on your resume, itâs important to provide clarity. The last thing you want is to inadvertently leave the impression that youâre trying to pretend like youâve completed the degree. And while it might be tempting to just note that the degree is still a work-in-progress, we believe that you should be even more specific. The best way to do that is to include the anticipated graduation date.

Now, if youâre like many students, you may not be entirely sure that youâll complete your degree by a set date. However, that shouldnât stop you from providing an anticipated date of completion. In fact, itâs essential that you provide this information so that employers know that youâre serious about your studies. This is especially true in cases where the job youâre seeking requires that degree. Fortunately, itâs a relatively easy task to accomplish.

We wrote a good post here on how to include an MBA on a resume.

For example, check out this listing from a sample resume with a masterâs degree in progress:

MBA, Human Resources Program

Dynamic University, Anytown, AnyState. Expected completion 2022

If youâre closer to graduation and are more certain about the date, you can use something like this:

Graduate Studies, Computer Engineering

How To Include Your Expected Graduation Date

For a straightforward approach, you could simply write the name of your degree and then your expected graduation date in parenthesis. For example, a psychology student may write “Bachelor of Science in Psychology .”

The school and its city and state should be written below the course and expected graduation date. Below this, you could also list your grade point average, if it’s at least 3.0.

The same science student could take another common approach and write an expected graduation date in the following way: “XYZ University: Candidate for B.S. in Psychology, GPA 3.5, expected to graduate in May 2027.”

The Sections Of The Project Execution Plan

PEPs need to be thorough yet easy enough to navigate or people will not use them. I typically divide mine into four top-level sections:

1. Scope and Purpose

These plans give the top-level view as to the purpose of the project, as well as the list of scoped deliverables, key delivery dates, and a procedure on processing changes that always seem to occur on projects, even the ones with so-called mature part numbers. This is the one section where you normally must have sign-off to not only green-light the project, but also agreed scope and delivery targets which then become the baseline for management by the project team.

2. Financials

In this section, the detailed project budget will be included along with the detailed costs which were calculated prior to project green-lighting. Guidance regarding the ways in which scope items or component parts thereof will be provided in accordance with corporate directives, industry norms, and regulatory requirements. Customer financial milestones or progress billings will be listed along with the supporting documentation required for invoicing and payment so as to allow for proper calculation and monitoring of the project cash flow.

3. Communications

4. Risk and Quality

Takeaways: Listing Unfinished Degree On Resume

No matter if you have completed your degree, if you are currently working toward it, or have dropped out, dont let anything stop you from pursuing your dream job.

When listing your incomplete degree on your resume, remember to:

  • Mention your degree program, school name, and expected graduation date, if your education is still ongoing.
  • If youre not going to finish your education, find a way to make your incomplete degree work in your favor and present yourself in the best light.
  • If you are an experienced professional or were dismissed for a cause, youd better leave your unfinished degree off your resume

Now you have everything you need to make the best out of your incomplete degree.

Recent graduates will still need to include all of the details above, as well as the completion date of the high school diploma or college degree. If you received a strong grade a first or a 2:1 you can include that as well. Lower-level qualifications can be omitted if they don’t add anything of value.

How To Write An Education Section If Youre Changing Careers

True, your education is important. But its not as big of a selling point as your skills or professional experience. Because of that, you should probably put your skills and experience first. Its okay if you position your education section near the end of your resume.

If you feel like your education isnt related to the job youre applying to at all, write the name of the institution first. By doing so, you can first draw attention to the fact that you attended a prestigious university. It is only then that recruiters notice your somewhat unrelated degree.

But you need to impress the hiring manager with your education section anyway. Besides listing key information such as name of the institution, degree and dates, you should also consider including related accomplishments.

Think of any coursework related to your new career, student clubs and organizations where you gained transferable skills. You can also mention academic awards, even those that arent related to your new job. They can help you impress the hiring manager.

Experienced Professional With Five Or More Years

If you have over five years of work experience history, move your education section below your work history. A hiring manager will focus more on your work experience at this point in your career but still refer to your academic achievements and training. You can also exclude your graduation dates and grade point average if you have over five years of work experience. You want to highlight your skills and experience more than your academic history. Again, if you have multiple degrees or certifications, list them in order of highest degree first. Here is an example:

*The University of Victoria, Victoria, British ColumbiaBachelor of Science Honour Degree in Biology

The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British ColumbiaMaster of Science in Oceanography *

How To Present Your Online Degree To Employers

If you earned a degree online, you may be wondering how best to present it to potential employers when looking for a job. And with a record number of students attending college and due to enter the job market this year, the competition is stiffer than ever for many professions. That’s why it’s important to craft an effective resume and cover letter that maximize your opportunities to explain your education and how it makes you a unique and valuable candidate.

There are a couple strategies you can use when presenting your online education on your resume and cover letter.

What If Your Degree Is Not Related To Your Job

I know someone who graduated with a degree in design that is nowworking as a life insurance agent, and I know a nursing graduate who worked inIT for years, before becoming a real estate agent. This happens more than youknow, so you shouldnt let this stop you from chasing after your dream job.

Below are two ways to downplay the lack of formal education inyour target job:

  • List the relevant coursework in your degree.Lets say you have a Psychology degree, but want a job in marketing. If youtook units in social psychology, communications, grammar, and business, thosesubjects show you have the knowledge required for the job.
  • List professional courses or ongoing trainingyou took to compensate for your lack of formal schooling on the subject.

What Are Online Courses

Online courses refer to training that you can take virtually to build specific skills or knowledge. They are sometimes referred to as MOOCs or massive open online courses. These programs often offer a more affordable and convenient learning experience for users. You can find free options to boost your general abilities, though these may not provide a degree or professional certification. If you need a specific certification, you often need to seek out paid options from providers with authority or accreditation.

Education On A Resume When In Progress

Recent Graduate If youve recently graduated, place your education section before or in line with your work experience. Your schooling is likely the most prominent piece of your resume, so it is acceptable to make this one of the first sections for employers to see. You can also include your attendance dates, any honors received and GPA if above 3.4. If you attended multiple schools, include the most prominent one where you were most involved. Heres an example:

University of Hawaii, 20112016Bachelor of Arts in PsychologyBusiness Essentials CertificateTerry Scholar

Experienced Professional If youve been in the workforce for several years, move your education section below your professional experience. Your interviewers will be more interested in what youve achieved in recent years rather than in your academic career. You can also remove more specific details of your education section like attendance dates and GPA if youd like. The more you can create interest around your work experience, the better. If you have advanced degrees like your masters or PhD, include those in rank order of level . In this example, the candidate included two diplomas:

Atlanta Graduate School of Management | Atlanta, GAMasters of Business Administration Masters of Science in Information Systems

University of Georgia | Athens, GABachelors of Accountancy

If appropriate, consider adding these pieces of optional information:

Include The Name Of The Host Organization

In order to verify the validity of your certification, you will need to list the name of the association who awarded it to you. Be sure to spell this out as well and proofread for any typos. If you are submitting your resume digitally, you may be able to insert a link to the organizations website directly into your resume to make your readers research easier.
