A lot of jobs or roles require the candidate to have some specific skills or competencies that are relevant to the role. Sometimes, these may not be explicitly mentioned in the Job Description but may act as filtering criteria. Hence, a candidates CV may be rejected by the recruiter if he/she does not possess the specific skills/competencies.

For example, even though the job listing may be for that of a data scientist, the recruiter may be looking for someone with a basic hang of coding in Java along with being proficient in Data Science.

Do Employers Check All References

When youre applying for a job, its tempting to think no one is REALLY going to call all your former employers to check references about previous jobs. But the majority of employers will check your references. I always checked every single one. And even if you might find one who doesnt, its just not worth the risk.

If you think that you can just send the same resume to multiple employers, think again! Hiring managers are always looking for candidates whose resume aligns with the job in question. Every good job posting will include details about the skills and experience that the company wants to see. Use the job description to identify the key skills that match your background.

The assumption we tend to make is that based on a candidates work experience or education, he or she is likely to have gained some of the skills, knowledge, and competencies related to the role.

Generally, the shortcut we use here is to look for relevant keywords on their resume for a desired skill or knowledge of a certain procedure.

Once you feel confident that a candidate is likely to possess at least some of these skills required, you can always further assess their abilities during the interview stage.

What Is Resume Screening

Resume screening is the process of sorting through resumes, either manually or non-manually, for the purpose of identifying qualified candidates who may be available to fill a specific role. The criteria used to identify these candidates is most commonly a persons education, skills, and experience, although other criteria can also be used.

Sounds simple, right? Well, its not. In fact, screening applications and resumes is one of the most time-consuming recruitment process steps. A recruiter whos been in the business for any length of time will tell you that 75% to 80% of resumes they receive are unqualified. That can translate into a whole lot of wasted time, and wasted time does NOT translate into placements made.

It can be tricky to decide where to place this kind of experience on your resume, but if the work youve done has largely occurred in an academic setting, the experts recommend listing it separately under a Relevant Experience section. Use titles like research partner, strategy lead, or project manager, and make clear any time restrictions you were bound by to emphasize that you are comfortable working on a deadline.

Prospective employers will be impressed by your ability to connect the dots from the classroom to the real world and communicate value beyond an assignments scope.

Pro tip: Only highlight projects that are relevant to a potential role.

That’s why it’s so important to make sure your resume — and the email or cover note you send along with it — is written in a way that pleases the recruiters reading it. That means it should be scannable, free of errors, and formatted in a way that makes it easy for them to uncover key metrics and accomplishments.

They Do Not Want To See Irrelevant Personal Details

Let us suppose that your church and sporting activities are not applicable to the job you are seeking. If that is the case, they are superfluous and should not be on your resume. The same goes for marital status and other personal details. Most of these are, in fact, illegal for a hiring manager to ask during an interview. So why include them in the first place?

If, on the other hand, you were managing public relations for a charity in your spare time and are applying for a job with a similar profile, then by all means, mention this.

They Do Not Want To See A Line About References

Did you know that 99% of applicants write a line stating, References are available on request? This is a waste of a line because space is precious when you have to keep your resume to a maximum of two pages.

A much better idea is to leave that out and have a list of reference names ready, should you be asked for them at the interview. Make sure that you have already contacted them so that they are ready to give you a reference, if requested.

Oliver Offers These 5 Things To Look For In A Resume:

  • Look for the story: Some resumes do a great job of painting a portrait of a job candidate. Others resemble laundry lists of jobs that dont hold together cohesively. You want an employee who can present himself, says Oliver âIf he cant present himself well, he is not going to be a good advocate for your company. As a manager or small business owner, its not your job to untangle the resume to find the story. The story should be there clearly for you, says Oliver.
  • Focus on skills: A job is a job, but what has the candidate learned? What will he or she bring forward to your company? More important than titles, more important than the names of the companies where the candidate worked in the past are the skills he or she will bring to you. Figure out what skills you need and look for them in the resume.
  • Notice any red flags: The seemingly benign line at the end of a resume that says, References available upon request is code for the fact that the candidate has probably been laid off or let go at some point during his career. This is not necessarily a bad thing but its something to be aware of. Someone who has never lost his job would not include this line on his resume.
