We really cant emphasize enough how important it is for you to check every section you have put on your resume and make sure each one is tailored to the job/position you are applying for.

Why?

Because the hiring manager wants the job seeker that’s applying for THEIR position, not sending a mass application to 50+ different companies.

So, heres how youd tailor your resume to the job youre applying for. As step #1, take a look at the job ad and identify top requirements and skills.

Lets use the following ad as an example:

  • 5+ years of experience in the field
  • Skills in Copywriting, Photoshop, and email marketing
  • Practical experience creating and optimizing landing pages

Now, you need to make sure you mention all of these in your resume, in whichever section theyre relevant.

List Your Experiences Or Skills

For Chronological/Combination Résumés, List Your Experiences

Starting with your most recent or current job, list your previous work experiences.

  • This section shows where you have worked and when. It also states specific accomplishments for each position or job.
  • This is where content can make your résumé run over a page, so be selective about what you include.
  • Pick experiences that seem most relevant to the position you seek. For inspiration, think of your full-time or part-time work, summer jobs, occasional jobs, internships, fieldwork and special projects.
  • Don’t worry whether your experiences are “good enough.” Employers admire people who have worked hard in a variety of positions.

  • education

2) Professional summaries tend to be generic and full of empty buzzwords

The typical professional summary boasts numerous cliches regarding how the candidate has ten years of proven sales and digital marketing experience, is a strong team leader, and has effective verbal and written communication skills, for example.

If you do, thats great!

However, always aim to show recruiters examples of these characteristics instead of simply telling them.

3) Your work experience section allows you to convey your skills in a more believable manner

Professional summaries that incorporate generic buzzwords dont sound believable without any concrete evidence to back up the statements.

These types of statements also make you sound like similar candidates who are applying for the same position.

Aim to differentiate yourself from your competition.

Youll be able to do so in a much more compelling manner by providing real-world examples in the context of your work experience.

  • The Federal Government does have a standard job application. Your resume is your application.
  • Hiring agencies use the job announcement to describe the job and list the required qualifications and responsibilities.

As a Staff Accountant, I dont get to lead very often, at least not formally. In the long-run, Id love to start taking on more responsibilities as a leader. This could be leading meetings or projects, mentoring or training newer team members, and other tasks like that. I enjoy the hands-on accounting work and thats still what I want to be doing, which is why I applied for this position. However, I havent had much chance to lead yet in my career, so Id say thats an area for improvement or something I could get better at.

In this example, youre naming something specific you could get better at, but making sure not to name something thats vital to the day-to-day work in this job. Youre also showing that youre ambitious and motivated to learn more in your career, which is always a good thing.
