Tourism Co Discusses Industry’s Gradual Recovery

The designated executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Co. , Carlos Mercado Santiago, provided an update on the gradual recovery of air traffic in Puerto Rico, highlighting important advances in the reactivation of routes between the island and main destinations in Latin America, Europe, and the Caribbean.

“The recovery and strengthening of air access in Puerto Rico is part of the priorities that we have outlined in the plan for the gradual reopening of the destination of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. In this sense, preparing for the gradual reactivation of international flights represents a step forward.”

“Puerto Rico is a key connecting bridge, connecting the U.S. mainland and Europe with the Caribbean region, so one of the main objectives of our air access division is to continue facilitating the restart of flight operations by the end of 2021, safely and responsibly, and complying with the new protocols required to contain the COVID-19 pandemic,” Mercado stated.

He underscored that both Copa and Avianca have already resumed flights to San Juan, serving Panama and Bogotá respectively. Copa is operating four weekly flights, while Avianca covers the San Juan route three times a week.

The PRTC works hand in hand with the Department of Health, the Port Authority, the Federal Government and Aerostar Airport Holdings in the plans for the gradual reopening of the destination, with a sanitary approach and promoting responsible tourism.

Iberia Will Resume Flights Between San Juan And Madrid In July

Avianca is an important partner in our efforts to carry the message that we are ready to safely welcome our visitors and to keep the Island on the minds of thousands of potential travelers in Central and South America, he added.

Avianca will use Airbus A319 and A320 model aircraft with capacity for 120 and 150 passengers, respectively, which will result in an estimated minimum of 7,440 visitors traveling between Bogotá and San Juan from June to December.

In addition to the $ 1.5 million impact on the treasury during its first seven months of operation, the arrival of these travelers will generate economic activity for both inns and tour operators, as well as for other businesses that directly and indirectly provide services to the industry.

The resumption of direct Avianca flights between San Juan and the city of Bogotá is undoubtedly a great step by once again offering Puerto Ricans an important connection door, not only with the sister country of Colombia, but also with the entire Center and South America. At the same time, it represents an excellent opportunity to promote Puerto Rico and attract more tourists and businesses to the island, which will certainly further boost the visitors economy and the economic development of Puerto Rico, said the executive director. from the Ports Authority, Joel Pizá.

Avianca is the second largest airline in Latin America and is based at El Dorado International Airport.

What To Do If You’re In An Earthquake

  • Move to an open space away from hazards;such as powerlines, buildings, trees and bridges
  • Move away from any falling objects, crouch on the ground and cover your head
  • Don’t rush outside though plenty of earthquake injuries happen when people fall while trying to run
  • If you can’t get outside safely, get under strong furniture or against an internal wall. Bathtubs or spaces behind furniture aren’t the safest places hiding under a bed or strong table is a better option, which will protect you from falling objects
  • If you are in a wheelchair, stay away from any objects that could fall. Lock the wheels and cover your head with your arms
  • If you are trapped under rubble, avoid wasting your energy or stirring up dust. Only call for help when you hear people nearby
  • After the earthquake, get to your evacuation point. Try to get in touch with your embassy and emergency contact. Try not to waste your phone battery.

Experience While Traveling In Puerto Rico

Traveling through Puerto Rico reignited in me a feeling that I hadn’t experienced in over a year;- the thrill of being in a new place with a new culture to learn about and experience. Although I had received my first vaccine dose, I was still nervous to be in an unfamiliar environment. However, it was refreshing to see how uniform the COVID-19 protocols were in every Puerto Rican town.

At every restaurant I visited, my temperature was checked and I was offered hand sanitizer before even stepping in. Menus were accessible through scannable QR codes, and there were few to no people wearing their masks incorrectly. At one restaurant, they even had their own method of contact tracing.

For most of my trip, I stayed at the Hyatt Place Manatí. Although I didn’t spend much time in the hotel itself, I felt safe during my entire stay. They stocked me with extra towels to reduce contact, and my temperature was taken when I initially checked in. The property even offers on-site COVID-19 testing for a fee.

My visit to the island was mainly focused on outdoor experiences. I knew that the chances of transmission outside were low, and the pandemic had awakened in me a new love for nature activities. Since Puerto Rico is known for its incredible adventures, the low risk and high reward made it a win-win.
