Do Not Use A Bitmoji Or Other Alternative To A Photo
âIâm stumped by this trend,â says Caitlin, Zipjobâs Marketing Manager. âI love seeing creative displays of personality on a resume, but Bitmoji are cartoons. Stand out from the applicant pool in other ways that will earn you more respect.â
From a technical standpoint, as with other graphics, Bitmoji turn into jumbled nonsense to an ATS. Unlike logos or artistic headersâwhich can be appropriate for graphic designer resumes in print formâBitmoji never have a place on a resume.
Keep your cartoon self firmly in the realm of social media and informal communication: your professional resume document is neither.

Does Your Resume Really Need To Be On One Page
Today Im revisiting one of the most classic job search questions, now with the perspective of nearly 10 years working in the recruiting world and also having worked with hundreds of clients with very different backgrounds.
Does your resume really NEED to fit on one page?
The short answer is no, they dont. This is not a black and white rule.
The longer answer is that although that is true, most of the two page resumes I see actually should be on one page.
So which bucket do you fall into? Are you in the bucket where you need to edit down to one page or does your experience justify a longer resume?
Lets dive in. You should probably be cutting down your resume to one page if
Youve been working for less than 10 years
This is the most black and white rule I have when it comes to figuring out if you should have a one or two-page resume.
If this seems impossible to you, the thing thats important to remember is that even if youve had many jobs during those years, not all of them deserve equal real estate on the page.
Your earlier jobs have 3+ bullets describing them
Earlier or less relevant roles can have one to two bullets or even none at all. If youve gotten promoted three times with your company, devote the most bullets to the job with the most impressive responsibilities.
Not all jobs on your resume are created equal and if you talk about all of them in intense detail, eyes will gloss over and miss the most impactful and impressive work experience you have.

Tailor Your Resume To Each Application
Many job-seekers assume that their resume should list most of the jobs theyve held in their lives. However, this is only the case if youre writing a job-seeker CV outside of North America.
The best way to ensure you achieve the proper resume length when writing your resume is to tailor it directly to the position you want.
Every job you apply for has different requirements and qualifications. Whenever you apply for a new job, your resume should change to reflect these requirements.
For example, service industry jobs can teach highly valuable soft skills. However, if youre writing a , including information about your experience waiting tables is irrelevant and should be left off.
To tailor your resume, start by looking at the job description, and remove anything that isnt directly mentioned in the listing. In particular, look out for specific skills theyre looking for, and how many years of experience they want.
Reducing your resume to only the most relevant information not only helps you fit it on one page, it also makes you look perfectly suited for the position.
Additionally, remove any positions that you held a long time ago. If youre unsure how far back your resume should go, just omit anything over 1015 years old.

Senior Level And Science Candidates
Executives or senior-level managers often have a long list of accomplishments and experiences that they have to include. The same is true for people in the sciences or academia who want to include their licenses, patents, or publications. These job seekers can write a resume that is three pages long or even longer.
Here Are Some Guidelines For Deciding Rsum Length:
If your résumé spills over onto a second page for only a few lines, its worth editing the text or adjusting the font, margins, and/or line spacing to fit it onto one page.
Dont bury key information on the second page. If the first page doesnt hook the reader, he or she isnt even going to make it to the second page.
Dont be afraid to go beyond two pages if your experience warrants it. Senior executives often require three- or four-page résumés, as do computer programmers and many professionals .
Traditional college students and those with five years or less of experience should be able to fit their résumés onto one page. Most everyone else, however, can use one page
Make sure that everything you include regardless of length is relevant to your job target and what the hiring manager will want to know about you!

Anything That Makes Your Resume More Than Two Pages
Unless you have a Ph.D. and are writing an academic CV or unless youve been working for 10-15+ years your resume should not be more than two pages.
For 60-70% of people, your resume should only be one page.
So focus on whats most important and keep the length short.
As a recruiter, Id rather see 8 specific skills that are relevant to the job Im hiring for, rather than a list of 30 general skills that youve used throughout your career but might not be relevant to the job. So make your resume laser-focused and target their needs!
So Does A Resume Have To Be One Page
A resounding no. We may have re-invented the one-page resume format, but were not fanatics. Battle-scarred project managers and veteran CEOs, for example, can benefit from two, even three-page resumes.
That is to say, if you have longer experience, and it’s relevant to the job application, by all means, you can extend your resume length.

When Should Your Resume Be Three Pages
Your resume should rarely be three pages or more. Most of the information for a three-page resume is better suited for a LinkedIn profile or a comprehensive CV.
âThough we generally advise against a resume length beyond two pages, sometimes itâs necessary,â says Jennifer. âSome professions and industries have a different set of standards when it comes to resumes and therefore require more information.â
Ideal Pages For A Resume
Your CV should be designed to be quickly read while highlighting key points, such as your experience and education. In most cases, a single sheet document will do the trick, but some job-seekers will require additional information to be included. Should resumes have page numbers? If you have to go beyond a single sheet, always include the page numbers in resume to make for easy reference by those reading it.
One thing to note when using multiple pages is that it should never be 1.5. This will leave an abundance of empty space and will create a document that looks unprofessional. For those that have less than 10 years of work experience, you will not require more than a single page.
As a general rule, no resume should be longer than two pages and if you do have to use that second page, adding page number to a resume is important. You want to make sure that all sheets remain together and using a page number on resume will help accomplish this.

Make Your Ideas More Concise
The first step you should take when editing your resume is to make your ideas brief. You can do this by focusing on the key idea of each sentence to shorten sentences in your summary or objective, professional experience or other sections. For example, on a data entry clerk resume, instead of saying:
Demonstrated proficiency reviewing and entering test requisition form data , identifying inadvertently omitted test codes and notifying appropriate department for resolution
you could simply say:
Accurately reviewed and entered data daily from 400+ test requisition forms while identifying and reporting inaccuracies.
Should A Resume Be One Page
In most cases, your resume should be one page. If youre writing a recent graduate resume or have a limited work history, a one page resume is long enough to summarize your relevant skills, achievements, and work experience.
Hiring managers at large companies go through hundreds of resumes each day looking for qualified candidates. If your resume is too long, theres a high chance theyll skim it to save time and miss important information.
Using a one page resume makes it easier for busy hiring managers to see your qualifications and skills at a glance, giving you a better chance of receiving an interview offer.
However, while a 1 page resume is best for most candidates, the ideal resume length still depends on your level of experience and the industry youre applying to work in.

Can My Resume Be 2 Pages
Yes, your resume can be 2 pages or longer if you have a lot of relevant information to put on your resume like work experience, certifications, educational details, and skills.
Its not bad to have a 2 page resume if making it one page would hurt your chances of landing an interview. In that case, instead of struggling to fit everything on one page, add a second page to your resume.
Play With Size And Font
When you are trying to make a one-page resume, but your information overflows onto a second page, there are many ways to shorten your resume. First, change the font of your resume . If your headings are a very large size, try making them slightly smaller. However, you probably still want them to be slightly larger than the rest of the text.

In this article, we examine the benefits of a one-page resume, explain how to fit your resume on one page and offer tips for you to follow when writing your resume.
Reduce The Size Of Yourcontact Information And Address
Some people think this part of theirresume needs to look fancy and attention grabbing. It doesnt. If a recruiterwants to contact you, they’ll find this information. But until that happens, theyre only focused on your qualifications.
Dont waste the limited space on aone page resume on your contact information. Just make sure your name andprimary job title are slightly bigger than the rest of your resume, and thenuse a smaller size for the rest of the text. When Quantity Equals Quality
As you evolve in your career, you’ll find that things that were once relevant on your resume aren’t anymore. For example, if you’ve been in your career a few years or are changing careers, there’s no need to list every duty for every position. Learn to recognize when compromising the quantity of your experiences will impact the quality of your employment story. If you have enough relevant experience, training, and credentials pertaining to the position to showcase on more than one page of your resume, then go for it.
Note: I said relevant. This doesnt mean you detail all your accomplishments since your high school babysitting job. It also doesnt mean listing every college course you’ve taken and certification you’ve earned.
As a recruiter, I can tell you, if Im going to read a resume thats more than one page, it better tell a good story about what you bring to the table. Listing every task you did as a manager doesn’t make you a good manager. But if you tell me that you increased productivity by 25% or highlight process changes for multiple teams at several companiesyou’re justifying that space.
If you can succinctly quantify your accomplishments to tell how you made a role, job, project, or assignment better and you need more than one page to demonstrate it effectively, thats time well spent.
