Listing A Deans List Achievement Under The Achievements Section

Resume Tips for Designers – HOW TO STAND OUT

If the resume has an Achievements section that highlights important accomplishments relevant to the job position, then a Deans List can be put there, especially if there are other academic awards.

Although, it should be noted that if the job seeker has other significant awards and has only been on the Deans List for one semester, it is better to not put it in this section.

This is because recruiters only care about big achievements and do not really care about minor ones as they go through hundreds, if not thousands, of resumes.

  • Member of Phi Beta Kappa
  • Deans list 2 semesters

Salesperson of the Year Award Johnson & Associates

  • In recognition for achieving 150% of the annual target.

  • Maintained honor list for 6 consecutive semesters.

How To Put A Deans List Honor On My Resume

Whats up all? So I just received a Deans list award for the 2nd year of my academic studies and I was wondering how to put it on my resume.

permalinkembedsaveparentreportgive awardreplyxi_mezmerize_ix 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago* I would be hesitant to devote an entire section on your resume to Deans List. If you have multiple other legitimate honors and awards, then by all means, add it there. But if this is your only honor/award, I would just include it in the education section with your University.

Don’t Include This If You’re A Senior Job Seeker

For those who have been in the workforce for a while and have accumulated a list of professional accomplishments, you should omit details such as the Deans List over time. They take up space and hiring managers are hardly interested in your educational

Higher honorifics such as the Presidents List may stay longer as needed, but once you are an established professional, your work will speak for itself.

Resum Mistakes That Can Cost You A Job

As a self-employed writer and entrepreneur, I dont normally have much to do with resumés. I do maintain one of my own, but its more of an academic CV that gets used only for academic applications. Otherwise, Ive never really applied for a job or had a use for my own job-applying materials.

I dont do much hiring either, but every once in a while I get the chance to sort through applications for non-profit jobs. I got that chance last week, and I learned a lot through the experience.

More than anything else, I learned a few things not to do if I ever apply for a job. And if youre in that position, pay attention to this essay I cant guarantee that everyone will process resumés the way I do, but Id expect that a lot of these principles will be universal.

How to Immediately Lose Your Chance at the Job

Roughly 20 candidates submitted applications for the job in question, and at least a third were completely off the mark. The funny thing is that almost all of these candidates had college degrees and a fair amount of experience, but so many of them made what seemed to me to be basic, no-excuse mistakes.

Because common sense is not always common, I thought Id share with you some of the bigger problems. Heres what they did wrong to get immediately shuffled to the no pile:

Another person wrote in to ask, Do you want my references now or later?

Someone else wrote in to ask, How do I apply for the job?

Uh, I get the point. Its better to just say barista.

Is It Deans List Or Deans List

Dean

A Deans List is an academic award, or notation, used to recognize the level of high scholarship demonstrated by students in a college or university. It is often synonymous with honor roll and honor list, but should not be confused with honours degrees.

Heres how to list Deans List on a resume:

  • Including Deans List on a resume is optional.
  • If you made Deans List only once, leave it out.
  • If you made Deans List several semesters, consider including it in a separate section on your resume.

    What Is Deans List

Making the Deans List is no easy feat.

Although commonly used in colleges and universities in North America, the Deans List has been known to be utilized throughout Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and Asia.

If youve been awarded a Deans List, you should list that accomplishment on your resume under certain conditions.

Typically, in order to qualify for the Deans List, a student must be within the top 10-15% of their class.

From a grade point average perspective, this generally means a GPA of 3.5-3.7 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Achieving the Deans List is a worthy academic feat and accomplishment.

It recognizes a student for their scholastic aptitude and capabilities for the semester.

With a 3.5 GPA, the student shows mastery and excellence in their coursework, with grades averaging an 87 or higher out of 100.

List This Accomplishment Under The Education Section Of Your Resume

The Dean’s List should always be in the education section of your resume as it can only be earned at an educational institution. You can add this under the awards and accomplishments section, but a recruiter can get a clearer depiction of this by looking at the education section of your resume. Adding your Dean’s List recognition can be viewed as optional from some employers, but it’s advised to add it even for higher-level positions.

    Example 1:

    Yale University, New Haven, CT

    School of Business

    Cumulative GPA: 3.8, Dean’s List 6 semesters

Cons Of Adding Deans List On Resume

There are, of course, times when adding Deans list could have disadvantages:

    • It may be considered redundant since your GPA is listed right next to it.
    • If its not clear what the criteria are for making the list, there is no real meaning behind it.
    • It can add clutter to your resume.
    • If you achieved it once or only a couple of semesters, then it may look like inconsistency for the Recruiter.

Listing A Deans List Achievement Under The Professional Profile/summary Section:

The Professional Profile/Summary section is at the very top of the resume.

It is the first thing that recruiters read and most of the time this is where they decide if the applicant is a strong candidate or not.

Therefore, it is very important to intrigue the hiring official with this section.

This section should explain who the job seeker is, their experience, significant achievements, and core competencies in 3 to 4 sentences.

The Deans List achievement can be mentioned here to show continuous high performance from the very beginning of the resume and then can be repeated in the Education or Achievement section.

Since this is one of the most important parts of the resume, including the Deans List differentiates applicants from others right from the very start as this honor list is not just based on the GPA but the comparative performance of other students.

    Examples:

    1) Customer Service Specialist with more than 2 years of experience in the retail and branding sector. Raised company revenue, saved costs, and optimized overall store operations by conceptualizing and implementing customer retention strategies from product merchandising to store management. Obtained Honors Bachelor of Commerce Degree, with a Deans List achievement for three semesters.

The most important factor to keep in mind about where to put the Deans List achievement is knowing the jobs requirements.

Is the position in a field where academic achievements are important?

Example Of How To Include It

Here is an example of how to include it on your resume.

    Dartmouth College | Hanover, NH

Bachelor of Arts, Major in Economics, Minor in History

    • Cumulative GPA: 3.8/4.0 Deans List all semesters
    • Varsity Sport starter on the varsity sports team all four years 20+ hours per week

Don’t Add Dean’s List If You Have A Long Successful Career

If you have a long, successful career then you should skip adding Dean’s List or your GPA to your resume.

That’s because your professional experience is more important than those little college accomplishments.

Sure, if you just graduated and are looking for your first or second job, it makes sense to add Dean’s List but otherwise skip it. The exception is if you went to a hard college.

What Is the Deans List and How Can You Get on It? The deans list is a prestigious award for academic excellence. If you meet the deans list GPA requirements, you can show it off on your resume.

The deans list is usually announced after all grades have been finalized and posted for the semester or quarter. You should then receive a certificate and letter emailed to your student account notifying you of the award. Some universities hold ceremonies or small events for those who make the deans list.

    • The Honors List

Adds More Credentials To Your Resume

Having really good credentials regarding the job application you want to apply for is a very important thing for every recruiter.

It tells them how experienced you are and how it can be related to the job in question, whether you have a certain skill set required for the job or not.

Deans list can serve as a bit of information that adds more credentials to your resume and tells the potential employer whether you would be a good choice for a job or not.

Of course, it is not the only factor, but it is a positive one most of the time.

What If Im Coming From Abroad To The Us Or From The Us To Europe What Is The Equivalent And Should I Add It To My Resume

Deans List is one of the university awards for good grades in the U.S and other countries. If you are coming from abroad, you would probably also have awards similar to: cum laude, meaning with praise, magna cum laude, meaning with great praise and summa cum laude, meaning with the highest praise. These are the Latin honors that most universities use.

In your resume better write the equivalent to your country honors. It is hard to make the absolute same, so if you are applying to another country and you are not sure what these awards mean describe them in a couple of words.

Where To Put Awards On Your Resume

You can include your awards in one of two primary places:

    • In your experience or education sections: You might add awards you won while working at a certain job, volunteering for a certain organization, doing a certain side project, or attending a certain school to the corresponding entry already on your resume. This generally takes the form of a bullet point and can be listed either first or last to draw attention to it.
    • In a dedicated awards section: Alternatively, you can include awards in their own section if theyre not tied to a specific entry elsewhere on your resume. Smith also recommends an awards section when you have more than one award, to help them stand out. This dedicated section usually goes near the bottom of your resume, Smith says.

If youve won a relevant award thats especially well-known or prestigious, you might also mention it in your resume summary to emphasize it .
