How to create a visual resume in LinkedIn®

You might also want to apply for a job that doesn’t need certain information or skills on your profile. Luckily, LinkedIn lets you remove, edit, or update sections before downloading your resume.

You can change the file name at the top of the page if you want to create different versions for different job applications.

Simply select the edit icon and enter a preferred name for your resume in the Resume name field. Then click Save.

To update or remove any section of your resume, click on the edit icon next to that section.

From the edit menu that pops up, click the Delete option at the lower-left corner to remove the selected section completely.

Otherwise, edit the fields that you wish to change and click the Save option.

Note that any changes you make to your generated resume won’t affect your profile in any way. This feature lets you edit your resume anytime without worrying about your profile.

In addition to showcasing your LinkedIn profile on your resume, you can add your resume to LinkedIn, by either linking to it or uploading it. This is an excellent way to provide in-depth information about your employment history and expertise to prospective employers and business contacts.

You can either upload a resume file directly to LinkedIn or link to your resume document on another site. Here’s how:

  • When you are logged in to LinkedIn, go to your own profile page by clicking “Me” and then selecting “View Profile” from the dropdown menu.
  • Go to the introduction section in the top right corner of your screen. This is the part of the page listing your name, headline, and location. Click “Add Profile Section.”
  • Open the “Featured” section, and select “Media.”
  • Upload your resume from your computer.

Here’s how to customize your LinkedIn profile URL:

  • When you are logged in to LinkedIn, click on your own profile page. Then, click on the “Edit public profile & URL” link on the upper right corner of the page.
  • On the right side of your public profile page, you will see your current URL. Immediately underneath it, you will see a link to “Edit public profile URL.” Click on the pencil icon, and you will see a box where you can fill in your new custom URL.

Of course, a young person coming right out of school is not likely to have a credit report.

    Having your resume available is a good idea for employers and recruiters who come across your profile. A more proactive way to get it in front of more eyes is to make your resume a LinkedIn post that will appear in your connections’ home page feeds. All you have to do is:

  • With this method, people can now download your resume directly from the post. Again, make sure you remove any contact information from your resume that you don’t want to share publicly. Since this is a feed post, consider adding a few simple sentences about your career goals and aspirations.

    Turn On The Linkedin Resume Assistant In Word

    You may already have the Resume Assistant enabled and ready for use. To check, open a Word document and head to the Review tab. You should see the button for Resume Assistant on the right side of the ribbon.

    If its there, you can move on to the sections below. If you dont see it, you can enable it in just a few clicks on Windows and Mac.

    Enable the Resume Assistant on Windows

    With any Word document open, click the File tab and select Options in the bottom-left corner.

    In the Word Options window, select General on the left and go to LinkedIn Features on the right. Check the box for Enable LinkedIn Features in My Office Applications and click OK.

    With any Word document open, click Word > Preferences from the menu bar. Select General.

    In the Settings area at the top, uncheck the box for Turn Off Resume Assistant. You can then close the Preferences window.

    Never Talk Money Until It’s Time

    Salary negotiation is always is a tedious part of the employment process, but it has no place on a resume or LinkedIn profile. Never post your salary expectations online or say you expect a certain amount. Not only does this put you below candidates asking for less money, it gives the hiring manager the upper hand at the negotiation table. Plus, it’s no one’s business what you make or want to make. Let the recruiter or hiring manager approach you regarding this matter either during or after the interview.

    Saying your salary is negotiable is another big mistake. Consider this the same as above it’s no one’s business what you want to earn until they interview you. Plus, it makes you come across as a little desperate. Instead of focusing on salary at this point, focus on your qualifications. Show the recruiters you are worth what they are willing to pay. A little research doesn’t hurt either brush up on salary, benefits, and other perks of the role you’re seeking using a site like Glassdoor.
