Resume Summary With No Experience Example #: Economics Student
Enthusiastic, highly-motivated Economics student with proven leadership capabilities, who likes to take initiative and seek out new challenges.
In this example above, youre showing that you completed your Economics degree and have an interest in the subject, and youre mentioning leadership and making the reader want to learn more about this.
Youre also making yourself sound ambitious and motivated at the end, which is always a good thing .
Notice the format too. This is how I recommend phrasing it. Dont say I am a ___. Just start with the descriptive words.

The Best Font Size For A Resume
The size font you use on a resume will depend on how much you have written, as you need your content to fill up one entire page. A good place to start is using 16pt for your name, 12pt for your section headers, and 11pt for the body of your text. Experiment conservatively until your one-page resume looks complete.

Tailoring Job History On A Resume For Each Application
Instead of mass applying to every job ad on the internet with the same resume, take the time to tailor it:
Besides the fact that 36% of hiring managers throw out resumes that dont seem personalized for a particular role, a tailored resume and application:
- Shows the hiring manager you took the time to apply and their job wasnt one of 50 different places you sent your resume.
- Get past the automatic keyword filtering larger companies might use to automatically screen candidates in their Applicant Tracking System . Your work experience samples need to be scanned by the machines first.
- Tweak diverse experiences to focus on the most relevant experience for a particular job. For example if youve ever had a job wearing many hats unless youre applying for another many hats position, this strategy gives you a chance to focus your work experience on the hats that are most relevant for the new role.
Restarting this process every time you apply for a new job may seem excessive. Ideally, the more time you put into tailoring your resume, the less jobs youll need to apply to.
Talk About Your Experience
Yes, this may seem paradoxical considering you don’t have any work experience, but you may be surprised. Employers are looking for a candidate who can work independently and complete the work to a high standard. Although you may not have any work experience in that particular field, you can show relevant life experience. This means that you have specific soft skills you’ve gathered throughout your life that are useful in the job that you want.
You can learn what your employers are looking for is by skimming the job description requirements and responsibilities. Look for keywords like communication, attention to detail, and organization, and compare them to what your strengths are. You may have developed some of these skills through your internship, volunteer work, or while pursuing your hobbies.
Write in Application Tracking System friendly language. Many employers use ATS software to comb through resumes that have the relevant experience quickly. So, if you want your experience to count, make sure you frame it correctly by using some keywords that the employer is looking for in a candidate.
For example, âUsed leadership and communication skills to work effectively with a team to achieve a 100% grade on the end-of-term project.â

Dont Lie On Your Resume
You should never lie on your resume. No matter how tempting it might be to fluff your resume up with a few little white lies, its always a bad idea.
Even if you make it through the interviews and land the job, you wont be able to deliver on the skills you promised in your resume. Plus, if you get caught, youll probably get fired. Just dont do it.

Include A Cover Letter
If you want your job application to stand out, you should include a cover letter alongside your resume. Since your resume is light on formal experience, your cover letter gives you the chance to describe your personality and emphasize your enthusiasm for the role.
You should look to contextualize the experience that you do have in your cover letter and use it as a way to flesh out your resume. Think of your resume as answering the who, what, where, when questions, while a cover letter discusses the how and the why. Discuss why youre excited about the position and how you plan on doing a great job based on your previous accomplishments.
Make A Personal Connection
Besides talking about your skills, a cover letter is also a great opportunity to create a personal connection.
You can do this by properly researching the companies you are applying to and finding how your background and theirs intersects.
For example, maybe there are charities that the company works with that you have volunteered with. Maybe you are being referred to the company by a family member or friend who is already working there.
Or maybe the company has been a special part of the community and your life in some way that has stood out.
Whatever that connection may be, emphasize it and write a few sentences about it to supplement your education and skills.
It can provide the extra personal touch to wake up a hiring manager slogging through applications.

Use A Professional Summary To Set The Stage
If youre still using an objective statement at the top of your resume, you can go ahead and kick that to the curb right away.
Objective statements have gone by the wayside in the job search, because they really dont do anything but state the obvious. Everybody whos applying for a job has the same objective: to get the job theyre applying for. Otherwise they wouldnt bother tossing their hat into the ring.
Instead, opt for a professional summary. Its a short paragraph , that brings all of your most relevant skills right up front and introduces you as a candidate.
Particularly if youre someone without a lot of relevant experience, this summary gives the hiring manager your greatest highlights, and also arms them with some context to keep in mind as theyre reviewing the rest of your document.
Sticking with our digital marketing example, heres a look at what a summary statement might look like:
Recent graduate of Sacramento State University with a Bachelors Degree in Marketing Communications and a minor in Graphic Design. Proficient with a variety of marketing tools and programs, including Adobe Creative Suite, Google Analytics, Mailchimp, and more. Highly self-motivated, skilled communicator, and a dedicated team player.
Keep in mind that this is another place where you should be referring back to the job description. Any must-have things you see listed there should be injected into your own summary, so you hit the hiring manager with that information right away.
How To Write A Summary For Your Resume With No Experience:
First, a resume summary is different than an objective. And its much better. Putting an objective on your resume is outdated and unnecessary.
Resume objectives are useless because they dont share anything the hiring manager doesnt already know .
So what were doing here is better and will help your resume stand out from people who simply put an objective.
Whereas, the resume summary gives a quick highlight-reel of your qualifications, education, and more.

First of all, dont apply for jobs that require that experience. As a student or entry-level applicant, you wont start out in the senior managerial positions. Write A Killer Cover Letter
Every job application should include a cover letter. Every single one. Even a job application for a position in the checkout line at the grocery store can include a cover letter. Why? Because it is the only introduction you might have to your future employer.
“I wrote a cover letter to get a job at Claire’s,” says Kathi, a Coast Guard wife living in Tampa who moved to be with her husband and had no local job connections. “No job experience, no connections. It was brutal,” she remembers.
Kathi had worked seasonally at her local mall in high school, but because she was a varsity athlete, she did not have time to hold down a real job in addition to school. “I had a little experience, but my supervisors had all gotten new jobs and I didn’t have their contact info,” she says. “So I worked for a few weeks but had no references.”
Kathi was worried that would mean she would have no one to speak on her behalf, so she took the opportunity to speak for herself. “I thought cover letters would be for bigger jobs, but my boss said she gets cover letters all the time. She said that it’s a good way to learn about someone.”
Most employers share Kathi’s boss’s approach. A cover letter is a reasonable expectation from any recent graduate or someone who lacks the professional history a stand-out resume might have.
Better yet: Do write your cover letter specifically for every position. The personalization comes through and shows you take the position seriously.
Use Similar Terms And Address Every Required Qualification
Your experience needs to address every required qualification in the job announcement. Hiring agencies will look for specific terms in your resume to make sure you have the experience theyre seeking.
For example, if the qualifications section says you need experience with MS Project you need to use the words MS Project in your resume.

Make Your Resume Better When You Have No Experience
Creating a resume is the first major step that everyone must take when launching their career. Even the most successful executives had to start out at some point by submitting their resumes without any work experience. Having the courage to get started without any experience, therefore, is an essential part of the journey toward success.
The key to creating a resume that will land you a job when you have no experience is to focus on the professional skills that you have learned at school or during the course of social activities. For instance, you may have learned leadership skills at a summer camp, or you might have taught yourself programming. You can also draw more attention to your personal strengths and your educational achievements. Knowing what to say on your resume with no experience will help you to get started in the job market and to move forward toward the career that you ultimately desire.
How To Realistically Fill Your Resume When You Have No Experience
You need to have a job to gain experience, but you need experience to get a job. At the beginning, just about everyone faces this catch-22. Even jobs that seem like entry-level gigs require a resume as part of your application, so how do you craft your resume to make sure youre presenting a solid, hire me package even if you dont have experience yet?
Pick a friendlier format
The good news is that resumes have gotten more flexible over time. It used to be that everyone submitted pretty much the same resume: header + objective + reverse-chronological job history + skills + extras. Now, employers are used to seeing a variety of formats. For job hunters who are forging into a new field or just starting out, it makes more sense to play up your skillsnot necessarily your experience. For that, you want a resume that prioritizes your skills and know-how.
For example, your resume might break down like this:
- Bulleted list of skills, targeted specifically to this job description
- Work Experience
The whole point of your resume isnt to create some arbitrary cookie cutter version of yourself, its to show yourself off in the best possible light. So dont be afraid to switch up the sections if it means youre creating a stronger narrative about who you are as an employee.
Realize you have more experience than you think you do
Resist the urge to exaggerate too much
